MCC - Nursing Students Starting 2009

Published

Hey everyone!

Thought I would start a thread where we can keep up with all the fun new and exciting things coming our way! We'll get to meet each other in a few days (May 20th)! So, how shall we identify ourselves to one another? Hum...

Anyway, look forward to meeting you all! I'm excited about the Nursing Orientation!

Hey Gemberly! It was really great meeting you! ;) Yeah, I didn't quite get the bathing suit in time, so I couldn't wear it. LOL LOL LOL. Although, I would have defiantly stood out! LOL LOL ;) I wish we did have more time to chat, because I really enjoyed talking with you! It seemed we were the last ones out and I had to talk to the person about start dates.

OMG... LOL. HEY... If I'm ranked #38.... Ok... we get it, you ranked #38... I wondered again, how it was possible to rank #38 and have the same question 4 times in a row. However, I do think that allnurses boards has really helped us to understand the process and what to expect.

I was able to snag a set of scrubs, that helps me. Too bad there wasn't enough to go around for everyone! I was like the 3rd person at the table, and just started to grab and try on.

Blessed... I don't think you would loose your spot because you didn't get patho... It has to be taken with the 1500 - 1600 series. So if you get January start, you can theoretically take it with 1500/1600 in Jan? Also, if you can't get into a class, go see a counselor.. I heard that you can request into a class? May be an idea to check that out now, so you know your options.

I wish I could have met you all yesterday! But we will in time, I'm sure. :)

Remember that people graduate 4 times a year so there is a constant flow of scrubs. They are probably cleared out for now but more should be around come october.

I really wanted to meet some of you, but there were way too many people wearing sunglasses on their head. Was anyone sitting near the front? I was about the 3rd person there at 12:30. I think I did see Corozon, sitting on left side (facing stage) about 5 rows up on the end. I was in 2nd row 3rd from the left. Sorry I didn't say hi, but by the time I determined it was you I wasn't able to get to you before you left. I was lucky enough to get a set of scrubs; thanks to the heads up on this website I knew to get over there asap. If you want to get the used scrubs, check out the website macomb.edu/sna

I was sitting about 3 rows up, on a end closest to the aisle, towards stage right? I was on the far side along the wall where the podium was... ;)

Yeah, I guess a lot of people wear their sunglasses on their head! LOL ;)

I was the row above Michelle, all the way to the wall, well, there was one spot between me and the wall.

If you are talking about Microbiology, I would srsly consider taking it at Baker if you can't get a spot in that class at MCC. That is where mine is from, so it transfers. AND has a way of making room for all the students. Even if you have to sign up and talk to a Dean, they will fit you in, and just move the class to a bigger room.

I know it is a pain, and it is more money... but it would be worth it to consider so you don't have to miss out.

Oh and that guy had me cracking up. :p I am not worried about starting in August.

hello, to all,

from this 1/2 an mcc nurse (yeah me!), here's a couple of things that i have wished for along the way.

1) i wished that i had started in october several times, including now, because between 1600s and 1700s was christmas/winter break, and during that time you have previously learned detailed assessing skills, but in 1700s, you are going to have to really be using them the second you walk into clinicals. right now i wish i started in oct because i just finished up psych where you are assessing pts, but not really any kind of medical issues, and i'm headed right back into med/surg 2. i haven't medically assessed anyone for over 8 weeks...what am i gonna remember over the summer even?

2) i wished i would have waited a tiny bit to go and purchase all of the equipment that they said that i needed. the "nurse packs" that you might or might not have heard of (a required item that you must purchase in addition to your books, available in the bookstore only) had a penlight and headphones in it, but who's to say that it won't change for you guys?

3) i wished i would have started to read ahead of time when i had the chance before classes started. i wouldn't have "super" studied it, but i would have read it and tried to understood it as best as i could. you will get a letter from (moderator edit) the most wonderfully organized and all-knowing woman on the face of the planet (she's the secretary in the nursing office) that will tell you when to come and pick up your syllabus. (or maybe you won't and you might have to call her, probably the last week in july or so).

i'm not so sure that things will be the same for you guys as it was for me, as i hear that they might have been looking to change the order of how the classes are given, but who knows. one thing that i wouldn't change is the friendships that i have developed. treasure those.

congrats to all of you and welcome!

Thank you Hoot! Some great info in your post! ;) I truly appreciate the support I have received from other nursing students and RN's I know. It helps me to get past the nerves when I know what to expect.

I'm actually hoping to start in Oct. Glad you said something about it. Well, it's the perfect time for me to get my MiWorks money, and my unemployment will take me through May of next year (my health care until March 10). So, if I start in Jan, I'm seriously "up a creek without a paddle!". I figured that during the summer, I would try to get one of the Nurse Extern positions someplace and work my butt off. I have no health care experience, so I'm looking to do whatever I can to ehnace that scenario! But, if I start in January, I won't get Med/Surg Clinical I out of the way until the fall semester... and I will be seriously hurting as I will have to be in my savings account for that much longer... So, I'm praying it will happen that way ;)

I too look froward to developing some new friendships! (Have already started and it's a great feeling). You know your not walking in alone. Also, we are all in this together... so why not enjoy the ride?

Thanks again Hoot!!! Good luck with your other 1/2... Question - did you come from a health care background? I'm looking to see if anyone is in my situation? What things did you do to "catch" up and get to understand the health care field better? What are some tools that I can "arm" myself with?

I would start later, but the longer it takes me to finish the longer it takes to support my family. I filed for my divorced two days ago... (thank goodness!!!) So I am planning on starting in August. I had thrown the idea of October around, but it would put off graduation for longer than I am comfortable with. I mean, of course, there is the chance that I will have to re-take a class. LOL That would throw everything off!

Hi Gemberly,

I am new to this board. I have been watching for a while and just registered. I too was accepted to MCC nursing program for 2009. I saw your post about the stethascope and hearing loss. I have the same issue and was wondering if you have any tips on a good brand to help with this problem. Any help would be great. Thanks :)

Hey Mzamb, Littman is a good and trusted brand. Their pediatric/adult steth cardio will work really well. Even 20 years ago when I worked at Binson's nothing compared. This is the brand our doctors use and I think for good reason. Give me a call if you want, you've got my number. Around 140 bucks but I think worth it. The sound quality rocks.

Congratulations!!

Do you wear hearing aids?? I have registered with special services through school (well, I have to turn in one more thing).

Anyway, I plan to get the littmann 3000 http://www.allheart.com/litt3000.html It seems to be about 100.00 more than the kind they were suggesting for those with normal hearing. :)

When do you think you will start the program??
