MCC - Nursing Students Starting 2009

Hey everyone!

Thought I would start a thread where we can keep up with all the fun new and exciting things coming our way! We'll get to meet each other in a few days (May 20th)! So, how shall we identify ourselves to one another? Hum...

Anyway, look forward to meeting you all! I'm excited about the Nursing Orientation!

Oh thanks for the info. I don't know when i will start yet, probably next year. I do not have a hearing aide because my ear has no hearing whatsoever to amplify. I am hoping to look into a hearing aide that i can wear on my good ear that will supposedly help the other side. A pediatric ENT was telling me about it. I just need to go see the doc he recommended and get some info. I'm hoping it can help me. I'm a little nervous about this handicap when people are on that side of me alot of times i hear nothing. What do you have to turn in for your hearing loss and what help will you get in the program. Also, one more question, what is your hearing loss? And thanks again for the info.

Hello, I am a new student nurse at OCC and i like to follow up on some schools threads to see how people are doing and how they are getting geared up for school. I came across your thread and was thrilled because I am too hearing impaired and currently work at a hospital as a PCA. I wear hearing aids and have a severe-profound loss without them, needless to say, i am very dependent on them! I bought a stethescope along with new hearing aids (they needed a special boot attached to allow connection) to make it work. I know its so awkward but its two cords that i can attach to my hearing aids which i can then switch my hearing aids to a special setting to hear the heart beat and breath sounds. I can either have it set to where i can hear the heart beats and the background noises around me, or just the stethscope only. Anyways, I am absolutely thrilled to know that i can accomplish the same tasks as everyone else, and who cares if my sethescope looks different than most.

I have been using only my left ear to hear the sounds because it is my strongest ear. I have been practicing with them at work a little. (always a plus working at a hospital!) I was born with this hearing loss so i am comfortable about the issues i have, but of course i'm always worried about whether it will affect me. you do need your ears alot, but i am confident i'll pass everything with flying colors. Buying all this equipment that i need was very expensive. ( about $780 for the stethscope itself, and the hearing aids were way more) thankfully it has been a great success so far :-)

I looked at the link and it looks like to me you don't have hearing aids so hopefully that will be a good sethescope for you!!

Well greetings welcome to the wide open world of nursing get some good nursing shoes you will be walking alot and if you happen to have those false nails get rid of them now or your life will be ------ also excessive makeup false eyelashes. dress consevatively , You are embarking upon a profession,conduct yourselfs as mature adults and you will excel also kill the nailpolish and pull back the long hair this is not a beauty contest as a seasoned old nurse of many years said you will dress like a woman,think like a man,and work like a dog. it is true forget lunch breaks,and your social life words of wisdom from those who haave being in this field for many years good luck ladies be professional To be the giver of care the advocate to helpless,the comforter to the dying and the empowering spirit of nursing to all human being of all cultures,races,creeds,beliefs,status down to the lowest of the low tothe high and mighty of those they are all human .

I have digital CIC hearing aids. There were two options I read, either you take out the hearing aids and use the stethoscope that way, or do like you do. I think that there is also an option of getting special tips for a regular stethoscope (for those without profound loss) but I heard that it wasn't the best way to go, and they will push them in further (I have completely in the canal aids). I know I wouldn't really like that.

It is exciting to hear of those of us with hearing loss doing well. Good Luck in your program!!

well i have BTE hearing aids so using a regular stethescope with amplifier would be out of the question for me. They do have the kinds where you can wear headphones over your hearing aids and you'll be alble to use your CIC hearing aids while using it. I know it may seem kind of strange, but if it gets the job done it gets the job done! Personally i would probably rather have the headphones since its eaiser for me to just pop it on and not have to wriggle the hearing aid around to hook up the cord to the boot, but i guess that's just something i'll always have to deal with.

You should see if you can order one and try it out for a little bit to see if you like it and then buy it in full once you know its the one for you, because sometimes one is better than the other. My stethescope with the cord and boot will not be right for you because you have CIC. but its so exciting to hear that I am not the "only" one out there haha.;)

I did forget about that...the head phone option. That is something to consider too. Because of the type of loss I have, it is only about 55% of a loss at it's worst (mid range), I don't wear my hearing aids as often as I could. (I have 4 kids under the age of 7... not being able to hear, isn't always a bad thing... :p Some sounds need no amplification, you know?) They do have that littmann 4000 (?) scope too. It actually has a display for the heart rate and stuff, you can even replay it. But that is just out of my price range.

I don't mind taking the aids out and putting them in my pocket, so I am thinking this is probably the best option for me. :)

That's not too bad of a loss, which is a good thing! As long as you have a amplifier stethescope then maybe you're going to be just fine! The breath sounds and gas sounds may be a little more difficult to hear but like i said before, see if you can try it out for a little while and exchange it for something else if it isn't good for you. for what we have to pay, we should be allowed to try stuff before buying for good, because it is pricey!

I did see the littmann 4000 and that is just crazy haha. It is cool though but yes very expensive. you should get it soon to practice so you know you're comfortable using it on patients! I am just so happy they make stethescopes for people like me because without it, i dont know if i'd be able to be a nurse today!! its so relieving and i'm very excited! I hope you find something that works for you and its not too expensive!! :heartbeat

Congrats all you newbies, look forward to fun with learning. I graduated in 1987, and have traveled many roads of different nursing experiences. Find some study buddies, it will make your learning more rewarding. We had a group of 5 and stayed together throughout our nursing labs and clinicals. We helped each other, cried and laughed together, and studied hard. Ok we went to Chi Chis often! Good Luck.. Have fun, and learn all you can!

Hey Tiffany! I'm Michelle, the girl that crashed your micro study time! LOL. I'm in the other micro class in the morning. I'll probably come around from time to time. It was nice to meet you, and if you don't get August, see you in October. I'm pretty sure that I'm in that start group too, and I also requested it.
