MCC nursing applicants for 2015

U.S.A. Michigan

Hello everyone!

I've been obsessively reading over the threads for the 2013 and 2014 applicants, but I thought I'd see if anyone will be applying to the Nursing program at Macomb Community College for 2015. I am a transfer student from Texas and will be taking A&P this summer then intro to Nursing (since MCC requires that you take their specific course) and micro in the Fall. I'm so excited to get back into school and was wondering if anyone is following along the same timeline.

You will be fine!!! The whole test isn't bad at all honestly. I was also a bit worried on math and I ended up scoring the highest on it. First I recommend buying the HESI Admission Assessment Edition 3 book and using that to study from. Look over it little by little everyday. For the math part there is a list of conversions in the book and I memorized the order of them and repeatedly wrote them down on a dry-erase board to memorize them. When it came time to test, the first thing I did was write down that list of conversions to have as a guide to look at. If you memorize these conversions you will ace math. A lot of people thought the book didn't really cover A&P well, I didn't really find a problem with this as I thought the A&P portion on the test was pretty broad. If it isn't one of your strongest subjects or you feel a little rusty on it, it may be helpful to look over your notes from class, watch YouTube videos, etc. You are tested on math, A&P, vocabulary, grammar, and reading. You are able to choose the order of the sections you test on. After each section is complete, it tells you how you scored on it. I would highly recommend starting with the reading section first as you are given long paragraphs to read and answer questions on. This section took me the longest and the reason I say to start with it first is because you are the most focused in the beginning and have time to get through it rather than waiting till the end when you're tired, not as sharp at this point, and may be rushing to finish on time.

Hey Sweetp3a! do you think you could tell me the courses needed for OU bsn completion? I was looking into it and the counselors at Macomb aren't taking appointments until fall semester starts! Thanks :)

Yes! I start in January 2016. They did not send me an exact date for that month yet tho. :)

Awesome! I'm a January start with a 84 HESI and 3.86 GPA. Let all of us late starters know how it goes! :) I also completed all of my pre reqs and BSN requirements for OU to get them out of the way. One less thing to worry about

Yay! I start in January also! And awesome job completing all your BSN requirements already! That's amazing! I was looking into BSN thru either State or U of D... still not sure. A few people who have went thru the program told me to go thru U of D, so I'm probably going to head that route :) I'm excited to know someone on here with the same start date!

@ameliay: Here is the transfer equivalency sheet from MCC to OU to obtain the BSN.

I do recommend meeting with a counselor so they can talk you more through it and they actually print out everything you have done and must take, it's quite handy. Try to request seeing Ken Shelton as your adviser, he is excellent and very helpful! About every other counselor I have seen over the past couple of years has no idea what they are talking about and I always get a different answer from each one.

I'm considering the program at MCC. I'm so nervous and wondering how hard it is to get into the program. I met with a counselor the other day. My plan would involve taking A&P alone winter semester due to the fact that she said I would need to ace it to get into the program. How hard is this class?

I wouldn't necessary call it "hard", the class is just very rigorous and contains a lot of information. The whole class is memorization; in lab you must memorize all of the structures and components of the structures and in lecture you are memorizing the concepts of the body systems. You must not fall behind because a lot of the units overlap and it's important to retain information from chapter to chapter. Study EVERYDAY (reading over your notes over and over until the concept sticks is the method I used, along with YouTube videos) and stay on top of your stuff and you'll do fine. I ended up getting an A- in it and I took it with CHEM 1050 (received an A). As long as you don't procrastinate and push youself, you'll be fine. Make sure you take it with a good teacher too, that always helps! Good luck!
