Mayo Clinic Summer III-2011

Nursing Students General Students

Published

Hello everyone!

I am a nursing student from Chicago & i have just submitted my application for the Mayo Clinic Summer III program. I was also curious to know who all are applying for the program, and what specialty you want to go into...my top choices are Hematology/Oncology & Gynecology. I really hope to get this great opportunity, I don't care about the distance! Please share :D

Oh yeah, best of luck to all :jester:

Hey does anybody know that has gone to the Summer III internship and lived at Crossroads College have anymore details on that?

What are the rooms like?

Did you like it?

Do you follow the college's rules/or ones my Mayo?

What is the set up of the townhome?

I'm assigned to room 6, what floor is that?

Thanks for your time in answering these! I really appreciate it!

Specializes in Med/Surg, Float Pool, MICU, CTICU.

Congratulations to all of you that got accepted into the program this summer!!!

I will be starting nursing school in the fall and I'm considering applying to this program as one of my options for a summer externship after my first year. I feel like this would be a great opportunity to open my horizons in the different areas nursing has to offer at a great institution. I have heard soo many great reviews about it too! Plus, I get to travel and I'm all for that

I have mapped out a course of action on how to approach this, but I have a dilemma. I currently work at a hospital as a Med/Surg CNA since January of this year, and prior to that, in a nursing home since August. I will have well over a year experience working at this hospital before any summer externships programs start. If I did apply and get accepted to any program, how would that affect my current job at the hospital? Most programs are 10 weeks long and my PTO will cover only so much. I would like to extern in an ICU setting. Openings in the ICU as a CNA at my hospital are not always readily available. I personally feel having this experience will help me land an ICU cna position if an opening is available after completing the program.

I don't want to limit myself by not seizing the opportunity to apply to some wonderful summer programs all because I already work in a hospital environment. However, I don't want to lose my job if taking 10 weeks off would propose a hassle to them. What to do?!

Specializes in General medicine/geriatrics.

I lived at Crossroads last summer....

The townhomes all have 3 floors. The bottom floor is the kitchen, living room, and half bath. The second and third floors each have 3 bedrooms and a full bath (there is a separate room for the shower and another one for the toilet and the sink is in the hallway). The bedrooms are decent size, the college provides you with a twin sized bed, desk, and dresser. There is also a closet, but the closet does not have a door on it. I also had enough room for a TV in my room. To answer your question, Room 6 is on the third floor. . The rooms overall are very nice, I liked living there. It was nice that all of the interns stayed out at Crossroads, we all got to know eachother!

When you move in, Mayo staff will be there to check you in and give you a bunch of papers. Crossroads has their own rules, and you will have to sign a paper saying that you will adhere to them during your time there. Admittedly, they are strict, seeing as the college is a religious one. The rules state that there is to be no drinking, drugs, or members of the opposite sex in any of the bedrooms, or in the apartment past 10pm (or something like that). That being said, nobody from the college checked in on us once while we were there..... if you get what I'm saying ;-).

Another nice thing about living there is the bus to get to work stops and picks you up right there at the college (you can't drive to work if you work days). The bus schedule seems very confusing at first, but you will figure it out after a week or so :) Any more questions, let me know!

You just need to be honest with your employer: tell them you are applying for externships, but also tell them you want to keep working there and ask them if there is a possibility they would hire you back after the externship. If they value you as an employee, chances are it won't be a problem. Although I would not worry about this or mention this to your employer until after you have sent in your applications.

Thanks for taking the time, almostRN88, to answer my questions! Your answers were very helpful!

I just graduated with my BSN a few weeks ago and one student in my class did complete the internship at Mayo. She said she loved it and her mentors were great, and now she has a job (contingent upon passing the NCLEX, of course) at Mayo in Rochester (in the area she was an intern, I think gastro or something). So, hope you get it! It could open many doors.. :)

Was there an interview as part of the application process? Do you have a better chance if you pick an area to work in that is not as popular.

Any tips for those of us applying for summer 2012?

Specializes in None.

I just submitted my application, but need to know how easy it would be to get temporary housing for me and my family in the area if I land this long shot. Any input from those that live there or sources to look at would be greatly appreciated. The Mayo Clinic HR person said they only have housing options for the student and cannot help me with my family.

Hey All ! Just wondering if anyone who was accepted to Summer III last year can give some advice for the essay portion of the app. I am applying even though I am in a two year program so I am hoping to overcompensate with a killer essay. I have a pretty good GPA (3.63) and was one of only two students to make the dean's list out of my class of 65(so I am assuming I am either at the top or second to top; I don't know what the other student's GPA was!). I am hoping that counts for something! Also, this semester's clinicals my group was placed on a vent unit, which was a much higher acuity than normal for 2nd semester, but there was no where else for us to go. I know my clinical instructor is going to give me a really good letter. I am also hoping that my work experience will count for something. I've been in the ED of a trauma center for 5 years and have done home care for 1 year. Also my list of volunteer work/activities is absurdly long (I like to keep busy! ). OK, sorry to ramble on so long, I just want this so bad and hope being in an ADN program doesn't prevent me from getting in. Any input from past Summer III's would be GREATLY appreciated =] Thanks!!!!!

Hello Mike,

I am currently applying to the Summer III program and want so badly to get in I was just wondering if I could possibly pick your brain a bit. I know there are thousands of other applicants and am positive everyone has what it takes to get it, but do you know what they look for to really separate a person out from other applicants?

Thank you,

Megan

This thread just isn't moving like it did last year. Plus a bunch of replies were erased in the update.

I didn't realize we needed a resume so I have been scrambling to update mine and after my sister looks it over one last time in the morning I will finally submit my application.

Oh I am so nervous. I want this so bad. I wonder how many applicants they received this year.

So I finally submitted the application!!! I went back to the application after putting together my resume, having it checked and checked again. Then I got to the cover letter block. I really wish they would state on the main page that a resume and cover letter is needed. I know someone who applied and was accepted last year who did not include a cover letter or resume so I did not know they were needed and no where was that listed as part of the application.

I want this soooooo bad. Everyone that read my essays said they would give me the internship in a heart beat. I so hope I end up being part of the 10% that is chosen.

So about 6 weeks until we find out!!
