Hello! I havent seen a thread yet for students applying to the 2015 extersnhip at Mayo Clinic so I thought I would start one and see if there is anyone out there who is in the same boat as me!
My name is Kayla and I am student from OHSU (Oregon Health and Science University). I submitted my application today and I am excited but so nervous, even more so than when I applied to nursing school! I hope to meet a few other students who are going through the process too!
How are you feeling?
What does everyone know about previous programs and applicants?
Are you nervous too?!?!?!
Good luck to everyone!
Hey all! I am currently at the Nursing Student Association of North Dakota state convention, where there is an HR representative from Mayo. She said HR did the initial screening to make sure we are qualified and, at this point, any unqualified applicants have been thrown out. She said they are meeting this coming week to determine who will be chosen, and emails should go out within the next two weeks :). I know we kinda all knew that, but that's straight from Mayo!
Thanks for all of the updates on the application status! I am currently a nursing student in Tennessee and have applied for the externship program at Mayo. Like all of you, I'm anxious to hear back!
I'm curious if anyone submitted a cover letter along with their resume? I know that was not in the requirements of the application, but I was told by an advisor in my career center at school that some places will be more partial to applicants who go above and beyond to write one in addition to their resume.
Probably a good call. I applied back at the end of October and had read where it said "COVER LETTER NOT REQUIRED. Despite the automatic prompt, please do not submit a cover letter or recommendation letters". With that said, I decided I would submit one anyways and take my chances because of the 'not required' part. If they chose not to read it, I'm hoping they just disregarded it and will not hold it against me that I decided to submit one. Or hopefully my resume, essays, and transcript will make up for that distraction. I guess time will tell....
If you applied early, it looks like it initially said the cover letter wasnt required....but they must have changed it because I submitted it in early January, and it definitely said something like 'please do not attach a cover letter despite the prompt' like heyjewels said...oh well, Im not sure how much of a difference it makes
With it saying it is not required, they can't hold it against anyone who did not submit one. I just hope they don't hold anything against those of us who did.
Also, I'm a tad worried I did not go too in depth with my resume. Prior to this application I had no resume directed towards a nursing position. I'm pretty sure it is too late to edit my resume since I have received the email saying my application is complete, but for future reference, does anyone have any suggestions for resumes? To create mine, I researched a template to follow that listed education, clinical experience, extra curricular activities, awards, and certifications. However, I did not go in depth with a description for anything. I just tried to make it concise. It came out to be one full page in length. If anyone suggests adding descriptions, do you know if it's too late to edit my resume submission? When I login to check my application status, I see where it says I can make edits. But is it too late?.....

Hi everyone! I was a Summer III in 2013 and had such an amazing experience! It is truly a worthwhile program and has completely shaped who I am as a nurse today. Good luck to all of you!
