Mayo Clinic Externship 2016 (Summer III)

Published

The Mayo Clinic Summer III application was just opened, so I figured I would start a thread and see if anyone else is planning to apply? It is open until January 2016, so feel free to hop in and comment anytime!

@annabsn... I friend requested you.... Kaila Nigh.

Then I can add you to the group, facebook has gotten weird on how groups work.

Sounds like a great idea! I'm Rose Morris from the University of Pittsburgh, PA :)

Just got an email and call from Stephanie. She just told me there's a spot in the ED for me! Alternates keep your hopes up!

Congrats vic42975!! As much as I would love this opportunity, I think I'll have to withdraw :( I don't want to turn down other opportunities, not get in for Mayo, and end up doing nothing this summer. It just pains me to have to do it... Wishing the best of luck to everyone!

Hi Everyone!

I plan on applying for the summer III program next summer (summer 2017) and I was just wondering what kind of GPA most accepted applicants had when applying to the program... And how heavily weighted the GPA is when applying...

Thanks in advance!

Hey Brooke,

So from talking to past SummerIIIs and from this years group, GPA is really not all that important. It mainly will come from your essay, your viewpoint, and how you answer the prompts with how it aligns to the Mayo Clinic Patient Standards. Be yourself, own it, and make it cohesive! Your resume will help but there are probably more items that are more heavily weighted than GPA. Just for reference, I was coming in with a 3.82 and a 4.0 science GPA, when I got accepted. BEST OF LUCK!

Awesome! Thank you! I was just looking for an idea as to what others had who were accepted.

I have two GPAs one from community college and one from my current college... Did they request all transcripts or just your nursing school transcript?

This is what they said,

  1. The academic record/unofficial transcript should contain your name, the name of your academic institution, and a GPA (cumulative preferred).

So whatever your institution does, some registrars have a full history and separate out your GPA, most factor in other credit and just report it as one total. Either way, it will most likely be updated with one or both on your current transcript.

I'm planning on applying as well Brooke! :) I'm so nervous because I've been dreaming of this externship for so long, but I know how competitive it is :(

Hey guys! As a past Summer III extern, I can honestly say GPA isn't everything! I had a 3.4 when I was accepted. Write strong essays, incorporate their values into your essays, and have resumes strong with community service.

Thanks for the advice!!! I'm so excited to apply, but so incredibly nervous! I know the essays are worth a majority of the points, so I hope I can make mine good enough :)

I have a near perfect GPA and a lot of nursing student organization involvement, different health organizations, honor societies, and jobs. However, I don't work as a CNA so that may be my downfall :(

Not necessarily. They want to know more about the content of your character and motivation than if you can do aide work. GPA is a minor thing. I was picked over students with 4.0s because my resume was strong with community service and awards as well as a strong essay.
