at least 8th grade level math. you need to know how to work with fractions and ratios. you may need to know how to do very simple algebra for some schools. post #2 of this sticky thread in the general nursing student discussion forum has weblinks to general math tutorials to help you review:

When I took the TABE for entrance into an LVN program in 2004, the math portion consisted of fractions, decimals, percentages, and other basic arithmetic concepts.
I've been an LVN for 3 years, and have only had to use the most basic math skills in the real working world. For example, the patient is to receive Neurontin 300mg. All you have on hand are 600mg tablets. How much do you give? The answer is 1/2 a tablet.
I was just trying to get ahead of the curve. So if I study twice as hard, then I should only have to take the test once.

I was really stressed about the math portion of nursing. I have math phobia and for years I worried it would be a huge challenge. I just completed my med calc with a 99% and it was sooooo easy. The problems were just like Thecommuter posted and I kept thinking, "is this it?" Now we did have a 100% requirement on our med test, and several people didn't pass the first time, but then they did on the second try. But personally, from someone who stinks at math and really, really fought to get through algebra it was so simple. Just basic math skills.

I'd also appreciate any information about this. I am petrified about the math! I have been out of school for a while...

The med calculation book by Gloria Pickar is pretty good. Worthwhile to pick up and starts with a basic math review.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.... I am so worried about math. I've been out of school for 20 years. My 15 year old has been refreshing with me and I have been stressing. I'm up now doing MATH on an online site. It's 2:45 in the morning and I've been doing this for weeks. My prep classes start March 2. I'm really petrified I will fail the mail portion. I am great a med. calculations, my Grandfather was a very sick man and I was his care taker until his passing. As for algebra. I know the basic equations. So, you really think that is good enough?

For the tabe: addition, substraction, fractions, postive and negative numbers, and percents. For the net: all of the above in a little more detail. www.testpreview.com/net_math_practice.htm. Hope it helps. It did me!!

I picked up Basic Math and Pre-Algebra for Dummies. It is a very good review, and even taught me some tricks to make things easier. I highly suggest this book! You can go to Math-drills.com to print out worksheets to practice on as well.
