Hi! Any Marquette hopefuls this app. cycle? I'm a little ahead of the game here but am too excited not to be =0) I'm applying to the CNM track!
Family or Pediatrics... but really really really looking to do Pedi. I do particularly well with the little people. :) I currently also do elder-care and while I do enjoy working with them, the kiddos just win me over... I can't really explain it. I'm a bit of a magnet to children in the most innocent way possible. I do a LOT of childcare and have worked with kids with disabilities and those from disadvantaged homes, and I even have a friend whose son won't let her touch any cuts or scrapes... he tells her to "call GG." :) I've slowly realized over the past 2 years that being a PNP is my calling... Am I conveying this passion to any of you? Can you tell I really want this!?! Marquette - are you reading this!?!?
I know we all want it... and we're all super dedicated to it... and quietly freaking out about it (glass case of emotion for sure MissHolland/Anchorman!) I appreciate all of the support here while we're patiently waiting and/or receiving those nastygrams of regret...
I can tell you want it gg! I too have a soft spot for children. I was also a peds patient myself for a long time. I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis at 8 and my life was touched by so many amazing nurses, NPs, and pediatricians. They inspired me to be just like them from a young age. It's tough though, because after working with many elderly individuals and having so many of them touch my heart as well, I've become more passionate about that area. My grandmother also has Alzheimer's, and helping care for her and seeing how much it has affected our family has given me even more of a drive to pursue practice with that group of people. I just want the chance to pursue my dream! Every part of me wants this and I can tell you all feel the same. I hope we all get it!!
Anyone attending Marquette this year for Direct Entry MSN program--where will you be living?
My fiance and I are buying a house in Port Washington about 30 miles north from Marquette...and I would love to commute with someone(s) and cut the price on gas for both of us! So anyone planning to living somewhere around that area of even just farther north than downtown Milwaukee let me know!
...FYI---If you are from out of state, be careful around Marquette area for renting. It's a great campus that happens to be surrounded by ghetto on one side that you need to be a little weary about!!!!!! From what I've heard though--Marq is excellent with security and escorting though.
I'm also interested in peds acute care. As gglove317 put it, there's just something about children that draws me to them. It's charming to be around little ones for me.
Vchri481, I've been hearing from people who are from Milwaukee that Marquette really is in the middle of an unsavory neighborhood - part of the Jesuit tradition was to establish schools in poor areas to try to effect positive change, apparently. So that explains a lot. I did a bunch of research on the city (gotta make sure I can see myself living here for 3+ years!) and Milwaukee seems more unsafe than Minneapolis (where I'm from), but urban cities will be urban cities. I am sure we'll be okay. I am planning to live on campus, just for the convenience for the first year and a half.

Also, wpolorocker, didn't you visit the campus recently? How was it?! Looks nice from the pics, but you never know! Share your visit with us if you don't mind.
For everyone who's waiting to hear back, hang in there!!
Yeah I lived in Minneapolis for 2 years and it's a lot nicer lol--but colder :). As long as you get an apartment right on campus, I think it would be totally fine! Also, The farther west from campus you go--the more ghetto it gets.
I went to look at the campus last week though and it's really cute. I like it a lot! The nursing building is in a really nice quiet area too.
I also went into the financial aid office to talk over expenses in person...Apparently we just have the FAFSA filled out for now, and then nothing really happens until we are registered for classes. I guess the Stafford loans that you get through FAFSA are generally 20,500...and then the rest we take out through grad plus/private loans...
Side note--anyone accepted get their packet yet in the mail?
Hi all,I went to visit the campus this weekend. The campus was lovely, though I didn't think the nursing building was anything too spectacular. They are renovating part of the building though, so some of our classes will be in a neighboring building this summer. If you are a work out junkie, the gym is really big and has 6 indoor tennis courts (awesome!). The library and student union are great, too. I thought the area west and north of campus was totally sketchy, but the on campus housing seemed very safe, as did the campus. I toured a couple apartment buildings at 21st and Wells and decided I would really be uncomfortable living there. I put in an application at a building on the east side. The rents are a little more expensive and you have to pay for parking, but I felt it was worth the cost. There are a lot of restaurants and other apartments in that area. I will have to drive to school, though, with about a ten minute commute.I haven't been home to check to see if I got a packet in the mail. I put down my deposit though! I am still waiting to hear from a couple schools in Boston and Hawaii, but the cost of living is much cheaper in Milwaukee. it seems like a nice city, though it is smaller than I am used to. :)
Still haven't gotten a formal letter of acceptance yet either. The email said 1-2 weeks...I guess there's nothing wrong if none of us have received it yet. Thanks for sharing info about your visits, glad to hear the campus is nice as it appears. I only live a few hours away from Milwaukee, but don't know when I'll have time for a visit. I'll probably be scrambling for an apartment later. Still waiting for news from Boston too, but at this rate I'm going with Marquette. Sending off my deposit this week.
I do like that the gym is right by the school, it'll be easy to fit in a workout after class. Otherwise, I'd be sooo lazy. Looking forward to exploring the city, esp since it'll be warm weather. Gonna go to the lake as often as I can! :)

I let them know I was interested in primary care and I spoke extensively in regards to youth and the disparities within our healthcare system. I'm not totally 100% on the option I want to persue either however. For certain it isn't the midwife track or CNL.
