Marquette Direct Entry MSN 2012

Published

Hi! Any Marquette hopefuls this app. cycle? I'm a little ahead of the game here but am too excited not to be =0) I'm applying to the CNM track!

Thanks! And congrats! I hope you find the option that works best for you to pursue your dreams in midwifery!

Hey blackbird,

Congrats on your acceptance!

Ouch, they specifically wrote that the master's option would take 3-4 years to complete? I wonder if thats the timeline for all specialties. I know the CNM track is a bit longer than the others. I was told that half the student go full time master's while working part time and the other half go part time master's and work full time. I now wonder how true that is. One draw for me was that the entire program could be completed in 3-3.5 years.

So many layers...

This was in an email sent to all accepted students: Please be sure that you understand the direct entry program.* The pre-licensure phase of the program is completed in 15-months (May 29th, 2012-August, 2013), after which you will take the NCLEX examination to be licensed as a Registered Nurse in Wisconsin.* You will then continue in the specialty portion of the program which requires a minimum of 3 to 4 years. As you near completion of the pre-licensure phase, you will select your first and second option choices.* We will try to accommodate your first choice; however, due to overwhelming interest in this program, there may be space limitations for some options.* Also, some options highly recommend and/or require a year of practice prior to beginning clinical practice courses; this may necessitate part-time study. Review the frequently asked questions about the program and specialty options on the College of Nursing website.

This is all very interesting. That's a longggg program and more expensive than I had previously thought. Hmmm..

hi everyone, i've been reading this forum in between bouts of anatomy study sessions and just took my exam today so i can finally introduce myself. congrats to everyone who got accepted! i got an email last week and will most likely be part of the 14th cohort. i've been trying to research the program more but unfortunately there's not much info online. really enjoying the bits of info shared here! :)

while i agree that marquette's program will be long and expensive, i think it's comparable to other schools. i applied to northeastern and was debating applying to nyu as well. both programs' pre-nclex portion range 15-16 months, and then they require 6-12 months of rn experience before continuing onto the master's studies. overall, that's 1.5 years undergrad + 1 year of rn experience + 2 years master's, similar to marquette. i think it's wise that the schools require the rn experience, and if we're going to be advanced practice health providers, all that training is absolutely necessary. the only real differences between marquette vs. northeastern is the issuing of the bsn degree (wish marquette did too!) and the fact that marquette is more direct about the program length.

i admit, i am a little worried about the time commitment, and having attended undergrad at a public university, i am deathly afraid of the program cost - but ultimately this is the career path for me so it's worth it.

i know someone (vchri481) mentioned they'd only applied to marquette and got in, that's gutsy! good for you for getting in.

i'm turning 24 in march. ;) good luck to everyone else!

Does anyone know if they've actually sent rejection letters out yet? Or are they just keeping a pool until this first selected group sends in their deposits?

Gutsy or stupid lol. It was the only DE MSN program in Wisconsin though and my fiance is going to Pharmacy school here and I didn't really feel like living in a diff state than my husband lol...Marquette is 20min from where I grew up also and I love the Milwaukee area :)

The cost and time suck in a way--but I think it will just make us all more qualified. If we get a job as RNs at hospitals, there's a really good chance they will pay for the MSN portion too. So idk--I figure you spend money to make money and that all good careers generally take time. It will be worth it though to have a fantastic career for the next 30-40 years!

Where is everyone attending Marq planning to live?

Gglovee, I was just told that there is a new stack of denials going out and that the second round of acceptances will occur in three weeks.

I also think that the part-time curriculum is a blessing in disguise. More work experience as an RN will be invaluable as a new APN.

Thanks for the info! I hope I'm not in that stack...

Me too gglove!!! I wonder when those denials are going out. ???In three weeks along with the second round???

I'm in a glass case of emotion here!! =)

Thanks for finding that out! I also hope I'm not in that stack..it's so hard to know what they're looking for. I've gathered from these posts that many of you are focused on the midwifery track. Anyone else focusing on a different area for the masters portion? I'm not 100% certain which option I want, but The two I feel most drawn toward are pediatrics and older adults (opposite ends of the spectrum)! Ha! But on my goal statement I focused primarily on my passion for the care of our aging population. Especially advanced practice in that area as well as research focused on Alzheimer's Disease and cognitive decline in general. Coming from my background studying Psychology and working with the elderly extensively that area is of special interest to me.
