Nursing Students General Students

I'm starting an ADN program this fall and I was just curious to see how many hours other nursing students work while in school. Please, everybody answer so we can get a good picture of the amounts.
I plan on working 15-20 hours.

Plenty of caffeine can make you even more fatigued. I didn't even take in that much when i worked 60 hrs a week during school.

Yesterday was my last day working full-time. I plan to work at my current job one day a week. We have school and clinicals 4 days a week. If I can learn to spend less money, I should have just enough from the sale of my house to get me through the two years.

Thanks to my wonderful husband, I'm not currently working. I actually quit my job last May because I thought I would be in NS in August and I wanted to take Micro over the summer. Unfortunately, I didn't get in until THIS August.
Anyway...my husband works as a network admin at the CC I go to and also teaches there. He has picked up every possible class he could teach, sometimes working 12hr/day, 5 days/wk. With what he makes and both of our financial aid packages (he's working on a Master's), we are getting by. I know I'm going to hate those student loan payments, but you gotta do what you gotta do, right?

I will be working 30 hrs. M-F 5pm-11pm. I NEED to work so it will have to be doable. I might cut back on Wed. which is my Clinical lab day. Well, Good luck to all the other lucky people who don't have a choice about working like MOI.

I'll be working 36 hrs a week. I will be doing the part-time program, but it's still a full workload. I figured I took 18 credits last semester with a 40 hour work week and lived. :uhoh21:

I am doing pre-req's. I am taking 2 classes next semester (one in person, one online) and I work 36 hrs per week. When I finally get into an actual nursing program, my plan is to keep full-time as long as possible. If I get too frazzled, I will drop to part-time.

When I was getting my LVN I worked three days a week but never two days in a row (Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday/24 hours a week) and it ended up being perfect. Even if I did a shift the night before clinical I could sleep as much as I needed when I got home from clinical, get up and study. I was always rested.
About a three weeks before graduation I started taking on more shifts because we were so short staffed. I was incredibly tired simply because my job was so phisically demanding. Most importantly: I made it.

I'm only scheduled to work every other Sunday 12 hr shifts....but will more than likely pick up another 8 hrs here or there...so prob. 20 hr/payperiod. Fiance and I live very frugally- and he's taking one for the team by not making me feel as if I have to pull my weight, financially speaking.

For those of you who are doing 40 hours a week (someone said 5-11 pm daily)... just curious as to when you are studying? Are you staying up late at night to study or just doing minimal studying on the weekdays and saving the majority for the weekends? I am planning on working the weekends (2 - 12's Fri & Sat) and I admire those of you who are juggling school, parenthood and a job greatly! I'm pretty good at prioritizing and actually function better under some stress but 40 hours a week sounds pretty tough to me... Kudos to you!

My program tells you not to work at all, and they forbid your working a night shift before a clinical (which makes sense). I think it's a little presumptuous of them to tell you not to work at all considering they don't pay your bills for you. This is a two year ADN at a CC, but I digress, I plan to work two twelves on Friday and Saturday (in school Monday - Thursday) as a nurse aide *hopefully*.
Mine is like that too. They say not to work more than 8 hrs and that they will not work around your work hours for clinicals

During my 1st semester of nursing school I worked 40-50 hours to keep my benefits and to pay my bills on my own. I was so exhausted and cranky all the time. I had school/clinical 4 days a week and worked 4 days a week. It was not worth it. I did manage a B average but it was really hard for me. Also, the instructors say enjoy 1st semester while you can because it's the easiest! It sure didn't feel easy for me. I'm now looking into working 25-30 hours and actually having a day off from school and work. I may take out some student loans to help cover living costs. Thank god I don't have any kids. I don't know how some mothers do it all! I take my hat off to you.
