Just about every time I tell someone that I'm trying to get into nursing school they say something about chasing women at school or it's a good way to meet women or I wish I was around all those women, ect.... Don't get me wrong I'm a normal guy and I do like women, but geez. I usually just laugh it off but it kinda gets old. Kinda like they don't take me seriously.I can't tell you how many times I've heard " You're going from being a pilot to being a male nurse, I know what you're after, haha" I tell them it's something I always wanted to learn, because I think it's a very nobel profession. Are there any good replies to these comments?

I'm not a guy, but I would think that being a male nurse would turn me off to women altogether
Nah, I'm just not trying to become a nurse to chase women, as implied by alot of people.

Oh bell...DO it! You can come up with some nice comebacks if ya think about it. All genders are welcomed into nursing. I think the world will slowly get OVER IT...until then...Be strong!

I don't get that so much, but I do get, 'You know, the last time I was in the hospital I had a male nurse and he was actually really good!'
It's like they're implying that males are generally not good nurses but that the occasional male has suprised them by being a good nurse.

Bell: Sometimes I can't help but be sarcastic and I usually come back with some sarcastic quips of my own.
I have snapped at a couple of my friends once - when their jokes because a little too obscene (and I'd had a rather rough week). They've never brought it down to that level (so far).
99% of the time it usually doesn't bother me. The people making those comments have zero idea of what nursing and nursing school is all about.

People respond off the top of their heads - which often reveals that there isnt much IN their heads... but I would be willing to bet most people have already begun to come around...and they just dont think about what they say. Tell them you love enemas. That will shut them up.
This is a good one. For a more raw comment...I can't say.....but it goes along those enema lines...Shut them right up.
Hmmm, that's a new one.
*shrug* I thought maybe some of you guys heard similar comments. In any case, I was off-topic.

You have a few options for responding here:
#1. You could tell them the real reason your gonna be a nurse and get defensive, and they will take you as someone that can't take a joke and get mad at you.
#2. You could go along with it........"Yeah your right, I'm gonna nail every one of them.." ........Little side note, don't use this one when there are women around....It ummm, kind of makes you look like a reall A$$hole.
#3. I would only suggest using this one with anyone you don't know......you could tell them you're gay.....that would really shut them up for sure.
#4. You could ask them what they are going to school for, and think of a cheap comment for them. Once again........A$$hole.
#5. You could just laugh it off and not give a crap......cuz in reality, who cares, you're not going into nursing for recognition.
On a little side note for this topic, DON'T date anyone in your program.....trust me, I dated 3 in mine, and I never learned my lesson each time. While it's quite interesting to have lunch with 3 ex's, it really sucks to always be able to see the side of them you didn't like......

I've heard a couple odd comments, but not too much yet...but hey, I'm only a pre-nursing student for now. I was in the car a while back with my mom, my niece/nephew, and my my mom's hubby. My niece saw some billboard for a hospital with some nurses and doctors on it and said something about it. I can't remember what she said...but my mom was like "you know you're uncle Josiah is going to become a nurse." To which, my niece replied "that's a girl's job!" I can't remember if I said anything to her or not, beacuse right after that, my stepdad said, all disgusted-like "Honey, don't tell people that!". Like he was apalled. I was kind of amused. But yeah, the other day I was talking to a dude...and he was like my brother had a male nurse...he was super!

I was the only male in my school of 100 students my first semester. I was single then, when I tell people that they thought that I was in paradise. It was HELL!!!! They were all catty as hell with few exceptions. Next time someone make a comment like that tell them to try it sometime then come talk to you.
