Malpractice Insurance

Published

Hey y'all, I'm going into my 2nd year as an ICU nurse... I'm currently insured by NSO, and I paid like $200 or $250 last year for the insurance. I just now got a statement from them saying that another year of coverage would be $250. The coverage is for 100k per claim, to an aggregate of 300k.

I called my mom, who is also an RN... she was shocked and said she pays like 80 bucks a year for 1 million/6 million aggregate. I've also been looking around here and people have been saying the same.

Anybody else experiencing similar? I don't know what's going on!

Thanks, y'all... I do live in Texas... like BluegrassRN, I never gave thought to the geographic factor, so thanks for bringing that to my attention, elkpark. Seems so obvious, now that you mention it, haha. They didn't ask me my specialty either, so I know that can't be it. I'll give them a call and/or find another insurer, cuz the cost is just ridiculous... thanks again!

I did my application online a couple months ago and distinctly remember them having a list of specialties. which is why i thought the rate might be different for more high risk specialties......just a thought.

I just remembered it was Jackson Coker or Coker Jackson - something like that!

As an LPN in Geriactrics, should I have insurance too? I can understand it for RN's or even where LPN's work in hospitals, but LTC??

Specializes in NICU Level III.

I'm in Texas and it's that high. To the poster that said they found better rates w/ someone else, which company?

My advice is always the same, if you have something to lose you need insurance. Don't count on your employer to stand by you when push comes to shove. As far as being in LTC goes, a local LTC facility just settled a massive suit filed by several residents, so you are not immune in any specialty.
