Male Nurses

I am looking for some real honest answers on how male nurses are welcomed into this field. I have read on some other boards that an RN is an RN and it doesn't matter if they are male or female. I agree with this, but I am curious to hear from female nurses, or students that have a male in the class, or in their place of work. I am also interested in hearing from the males in regards to how they are treated and welcomed in this field. I have just applied to three ADN programs(due to the waiting lists at each) and I am really excited about entering this field. On the application for one of my essays, I wrote a little about the opportunities that a male may have in this field being that the jobs are only approx 7% populated by males. Was that a smart thing to write about on an application? Thanks to all.......

I am a student with several males in my class. I really like having them around as well as the male nurses that I have worked with in clinicals. It seems to cut down on the potential "catiness" common with females and is a nice addition to the environment. I hope that I work with males in my post-graduation job as it seems to even things out.

When more men become nurses, the way nursing is will change for the better. Wages will go up, benefits will be better, and respect to the profession will come. I welcome all men to the nursing profession, and even find myself encouraging younger men and teen boys to consider nursing so we can up the ante in nursing to a sweeter pot for all. :D

My fiance is an RN on a telemetry unit. He is wonderful to work with and terrific with his patients. Patients and their families are always sending cards and gifts to him for the care he gives. With him if the condition is grave for the patient I have never seen him sweat. He is a true advocate for his patients. He will never back down to a doctor if he feels the patients interest are at risk. Yes I think a male perspective to the nursing field is a wonderful addition.

Hey bro,

I am a RN...been a nurse for 7 years. I encourage you. I love the nursing field. I admit...when I first started, I got stereotyped. People were childish and It sucked, but I am proud of what I do.

My wife tells me daily that she is glad that I am in a good field. I recently got Accepted int the Medical College of Georgias nursing program to finish my bachelors and hopefully CRNA.

Be encouraged.

Hi, Glad to hear you made it to the application phase of nursing education, I wish I could say the same, I still have many classes to go, but thats another story. I am a CNA in a long term care facility and as of yet I havent seen any descrimiination YET I hope I never do, but then again I am just a CNA and the other CNAs welcome the help, as far as RNs or LVNs my girlfriend is an RN in a hospital and she also has nothing negative to say about male co-workers or instances of negativity toward males in general at her job, believe me Ive heard all the negative rumors and so far I mpleased to say they are for the most part untrue, so good luck and keep on keepin on.

Hello, Everyone

I am not a nursing student I am taking my prerequisites to enter into an RN Program. I hope that when the time comes for me to be accepted into a nursing program that there will be alot of male nursing students. Go male nurses !!!!!

In our A&P class it was 95% women... the outgoing men loved it! HA

The only comment a friend (girl) made about the one, lone, male nursing student was that when they had to give each other shots in the butt, no one wanted him too. The instructor didnt care, so it didnt make any difference. I know another friend said that it was uncomfortable when they had to check "female, or male" parts during clinical, but you know what? ITS called LIFE!

They were simple problems that really didnt cause any big problems or waves at all.

Personally, I think it would be nice to have a male nurse around, and I agree with the poster who commented on women being less "caddy"!

HI!!

Just wanted to let you know that I am married to a wonderful guy who happens to be a nurse!!! He is an ER nurse, working 99.9% of the time in the pediatrics side. It's great to see him working with all those little ones and their parents!!!!

I think more males should go into nursing!!!
