  1. Hey Whinny I am so with you on hating being at work. Ive been an RN for 2.5 months in Peds. Glad to know Im not alone.
  2. Hello. I am posting this in the Texas forum because I live in and am licensed in TX. However, anyone is welcome to reply. I received a certified piece of mail to my new address that I have lived at for only 7 weeks, adressed to my name, RN. It is from a lawyer in Austin. To quote them, they "may bring a lawsuit on behalf of our client, against all responsible parties, including you, if that is the case, relating to the mismanagement of the care and treatment" of their client. Ok, so I read it and its a HIPAA thing. Yes, I understand that nurses get sued everyday. However, this is: #1-A pt. that I have never taken care of. #2- A pt. who is way older than anyone Ive ever taken care of, I work pedi, this person was born in the 60's. #3- I have only had my license since January. They want me to turn over any and all medical records that I have (why would a nurse keep them??????)and they enclosed a Protected Health Information form and an affadavit. Obviously they have made a mistake, I have only been an RN for 7 weeks, never met this dude, and have never worked at the place they mention in the letter. The thing that bugs me is that they got my address. Does anyone know if the BNE will give addresses of the people they license away at the request of any stupid ambulance chaser of a lawyer? Wouldnt they at LEAST look and see that these people have the wrong person? I seriously cannot think of a way for some random lawyer to have my address, which is new and not listed in any phone books or anything. Can the BNE do this? Will I find the answer to this in the Nurse practice Act? Obviously I am sending them a certified letter in return to inform them of their mistake, and calling them, but I am really disturbed. Thanks for reading.
  3. Trinity Christian is a great private school. Public schools depend on what area you move to. Good luck.
  4. Thanks so much for all of the replies!! I really needed other points of view. Even though they are all different, they are helpful. When I was hired, she said she only "needed" me for nights, like that was it if I wanted the job, and I could request to go to days later if I wanted. So, I am thinking of telling her that I have been anticipating the schedule and the extra money made on nights, and that I will work days IF they will still be flexible with my school schedule when I go back this summer. There are several part time RNs/LVNs that fill in on days so hopefully that will be a "yes". I'm not afraid to tell her no, I do want her to view me as mature and willing to help. I realize this may seem like a trivial thing, which shift to work. Its just that I have made so many big decisions lately. I was going to move back home, 350 miles away, but instead stayed here, which took me forever to decide! Then there is stuff in my personal life I have had to deal with, a boyfriend, and friends who I am not really sure if they are true friends anymore. I am just ready for a break from life but thats not realistic..............another decision to make totally caught me off guard. And I dont have my parents to decide things for me anymore, I have to do it myself. Thats where Im coming from, sorry if all of this was TMI and thanks for the replies. JuicyJem

I am a new nurse working in Pediatrics. Kids are just different....they react totally different than adults do to being in the hospital, usually. (there are always exceptions.) If you havent already I would look at developmental stages, like Erikson and Piaget. They should help you understand why kids may react the way they do. A lot of kids, especially in the wintertime, are admitted for respiratory stuff like RSV. They are not dying, but they still need special care, and you can often do a lot of teaching with the parents! I think you will find pedi clinicals different but rewarding. Good luck!
  7. Hi everyone, I would just like some input from those who have more experience than I do. I am a new RN and started my job in January. I was hired in Dec. for a night position on a pedi floor, which is exactly what I wanted. I have never been the type to get up and go to bed early, I am still young (23), and most of my friends are working nights. I am also planning on going back to school this summer. The money on nights is better, its a difference of about $4000-5000 per year. I have to orient on the day shift and Thursday should be my last day shift, then I go to nights. Today my nurse manager called me and asked, "How would you like to stay on days?" I said I would have to think about it. Last week there were two girls who were on the waiting list to go to days, waiting for me to get out of orientation, and now all of the sudden they don't want to. I have become a pretty good "day person" the last few weeks, but I just feel like I am so boring! I come home, eat, and sleep. I cant ever stay out late. Besides that, the day schedule is pretty much set whereas the night schedule is flexible because they are all in school. I want to be a team player and be flexible, but within reason. It is frustrating to be asked about it at this point, and I don't want to be a pushover. I am totally new to nursing and to this nurse manager (who is well known and very liked within the hospital) so I would really appreciate any input! Thanks.
  8. It turned out to be great. Now I'm worn out............gotta work another 12 tomorrow. Thanks to all, JuicyJem
  9. Hi, I am a new RN. I have been to orientation at the hospital where I am working, and I met a lot of people. However, none of these will be working with me. I am the only new RN on this floor. I haven't met my preceptor yet. I am basically nervous about how they will treat me. I guess I am just used to being treated like a student...........but I want so much for my preceptor to be a good one!!!!! I am just nervous to walk in at 6:30 in the morning, meet a bunch of new people, and then immediately start working with them. Help!
  10. Anna, your test sounds exactly like mine. I took it today. SO stressful to wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  11. I also did not have calculations, just prioritization mostly.
  12. I took it today. I was WAY harder than I thought! I don't know if it was the anxiety from knowing that I REALLY needed to pass or what, but I was really surprised. In school I could always narrow the answers down to 1 or 2 and always came out on top as far as grades. Maybe my school stinks, or maybe I am just freaking out. Hopefully I passed. It shut off at 75. From the time I left my car to when I got back in it was 1 hour, 20 minutes. Very scary!!!! But also exciting because on Friday I will hopefully be able to say I am an RN!!!!!
  13. I wouldn't say that you are scary. I have always lived in the South, and I know that some patients will be rude to a transgender nurse/student. I have had a pt. recently make a comment about a nurse who was black. Whether or not it's right, people are judgemental, predjudiced and rude. But it is against the law to discriminate based on race, national origin, ethnicity, gender, religion, etc.................you know the clause that is on the top of most employment applications these days. I am not surprised that you are uncomfortable with it, because it is something that is new and unfamiliar. But it is important to be as professional as possible to this student. It is not only the right thing to do, but making your feelings known for this student's lifestyle could get you into trouble. Just my opinion.
  14. When did you take/when are you taking NCLEX? Did you pass? Make sure and post again when you pass. I am testing Wednesday the 14th, in 5 days. I am glad to get it over with before I start work on the 19th. A tip I learned this week- Everything you need is available to you at the "NCLEX hospital." The interventions listed as your choices already have a doctors order, there is no shortage of staff, etc. Good luck to everyone!
  15. I did a review course this week, Mon-Wed. It was quite honestly very long and boring. Positive aspects were like someone said before-feeling like I am doing as much as possible to study. But I really believe that new testing strategies are hard to learn and I think I will pass and would have passed without it. I got paid to go and got to see classmates. Just my 2 cents.
