Male Nurse Characteristics

Hey guys and gals, im currently an EMT but im gearing up for nursing school in the next year (hopefully). im reading through the forums and ive noticed alot of stressed nurses and or nurses that are having a hard time handling co-workers.

anyways my question: do you think as a male nurse your able to be more assertive and get your point across better? do you tend to have thicker skin in certain situations? are your co-workers intimidated by you?

I also want to point out that there are Female nurses out there that are more than capable of being assertive and have thick skin as well. I just want wanted a perspective from male nurses

Agree, and this wise statement shows that already you don't buy into any sexist stereotypes about men in nursing. Continue like this and you'll do fine. Good luck in your new career!

*** yes but certainly not true for all the male nurses I work with.

*** Absolutly, my skin is miles thicker than my co-workers male and female.

are your co-workers intimidated by you?

*** No. I am the rapid response nurse for my hospital. If nurses were intimidated by me they wouldn't call me when their patient needed me. I go out of my way to be nice and helpful so that nurses have not hesitation about calling rapid response.

I've been an RN for 20 years, most of in the ED. The only thing that intimidates me is armed with an assault rifle.

Yes I think the Docs arent so quick to act like an ass with a Male Nurse. No one is intimidated but I notice I get alot less of the bs attitudes. And as for co-workers they will argue with each other but most of us guys will just stare blankly and keep it moving. We dont do drama.

Undoubtedly, assertiveness comes from within without implicating gender. Therefore, assertiveness is based on mutual respect, it's an effective and diplomatic communication style. Moreover, being assertive shows that you respect yourself, because you're willing to stand up for your interests and express your thoughts and feelings. In addition, it also demonstrates that you're aware of the rights of others and are willing to work on resolving conflicts and share you point of view on any given subject. Lastly, assertiveness shouldn't be confused with aggressiveness :redbeathe

No, I think females are equally good at getting their point across.

No. Nurses has been a female dominated profession and nurses have real thick skin, male and female. There are exceptions on both sides.

No. I don't intimidate my coworkers at all. I'm myself and they seem to like me. I can advocate for myself and my patients without intimidating others.
