Macomb Community College Nursing Questions

U.S.A. Michigan

Can anyone provide details as to how the program works? Any info. at all would be appreciated.

Are each set of classes equal to 1/2 of a regular semester (each class is worth approximately 1.5-2.5 credits)?

I just squeaked in (#158) so most likely I will not be starting until March 2011. I have already completed all of my degree requirements above the nursing classes - any suggestions as to which classes to take to go towards a bachelors degree while I am waiting?

Also, I am very excited and would like to start buying supplies or studying before my start - any suggestions would be appreciated! I can't wait until May 19th!

I don't know this for sure but from what I have heard, you do need them right away for clinicals. I visited the dove website but couldn't get too far because you need a school code to see what our prices would be. However, you can see the prices for non-school scrubs and they seem to be around $80 and up.

I can't wait for the meeting on the 19th so that I can start preparing! I have already started getting some goodies from my kids and husband for Mother's Day and my birthday is next month!

I am an organizational/planning nerd and I am ready to get this show on the road! lol

You need them for the second week of classes. I heard there is talk of changing the uniforms so that you can buy them in the bookstore with financial aid, but IF nothing changes for you guys the school code for dove is MAC. That should help you look up prices. They are not cheap but they do last. I only bought one pair for the first year and I was fine (they tell you to buy two of everything, do NOT get two lab coats, I have never used mine).

Corazon - that is great info., thanks so much!

Can you give us any additional tips that you wish someone had told you before you started?

I did hear that same thing about uniforms at the bookstore . I'm also an organizing nerd! I'd love to scratch something off the list!

I want to order a top from them and see if I can take it to a scrub store and match it with any other brand. Dove's prices are ridiculous. $47 for a pair of scrub pants?! REALLY??? Ive had many pairs of scrubs from my previous job, and they were half the price of that, and they held up through plenty of washes and a pregnancy. Landau and Urbane are great scrub companies, so I'm hoping they make this "sailor blue" color...

Yeah I hate the Dove pants so I bought a pair of Dickies in Sailor Blue that matched, none of the instructors noticed the difference or if they did they didn't say anything. Also, at orientation they have former students selling their old scrubs so if you can get to the line quickly you can save ALOT of money (the scrubs hold up very well). I didn't go in time and they were all gone.

Does anyone know if there are Macomb Nursing hoodies or sweatshirts available anywhere?

CorazonDeOro, good to know Dickies has the pants in the sailor blue. The pants from Dove look scary. haha. There's a big scrub store in Ferndale that I usually go to, and I think they give discounts for students as well.

Any recommendations on a stethoscope and shoes?

Yeah I got my Dickies at the Scrubs store in Troy at 15 mile between Crooks and Coolidge. They are not tapered and huge like the Dove ones (but I rotate and wear them both).

Shoes-I got all white New Balance (all leather) from DSW.

Stethoscope-I have the Littmann Master Classic II. I like it a lot but there are several Littman's in that price range that seem pretty good.

Love New Balance... that's all I wear. I'll check out the place in Ferndale for the scrubs, and if they don't have them, I'll try the place in Troy.

So, again, I was #151 out of 159. I would L-O-V-E a January start for a few reasons, but figure that I'm obviously slated for March. Does anyone think that there is a LITTLE hope that I would be able to start in January though? Maybe? Reality check/advice/info would be great....

I have a good feeling that you just may get that January start. I heard that the 49th alternate started in this past march class.

I would love earlier, but I don't want to push it, so January would probably just be best. I figured I could just complete some classes for my BSN during the fall term, since I'll have the financial aid to do so anyways. Thank you shawnb.

I emailed one of the nursing professors regarding used scrubs and she just told me that they will no longer be using Dove uniforms. We will find out the details at the orientation next week. Hopefully whatever they chose to go with will be more affordable!
