Macomb Community College Nursing Questions

Published

Can anyone provide details as to how the program works? Any info. at all would be appreciated.

Are each set of classes equal to 1/2 of a regular semester (each class is worth approximately 1.5-2.5 credits)?

I just squeaked in (#158) so most likely I will not be starting until March 2011. I have already completed all of my degree requirements above the nursing classes - any suggestions as to which classes to take to go towards a bachelors degree while I am waiting?

Also, I am very excited and would like to start buying supplies or studying before my start - any suggestions would be appreciated! I can't wait until May 19th!

The Nursing program has classes in 8 week blocks, so in a regular 16 week semester for most Macomb students, you will have two 8 week semesters (so if you start in March you will only go for 8 weeks, and take the 1500's and then in the Fall you will have the 1600s and 1700s). Does that make sense? Once you get to the 1700's the clinical is 8 weeks and the lecture classes are 4 weeks (so you only have 2 classes at a time). Its hard to explain but they will tell you at orientation.

If you are planning on going for a BSN I would take Chemistry (Organic and Inorganic) and then look at the different BSN programs to see what else they require (such as languages, liberal arts, etc).

zhockeymom77 - I just squeaked in too. I'm 151. So, I wanted to get a jump on the BSN while I wait to start, and I found this through the University Center @ MCC -

It's the RN-BSN completion through University of Detroit Mercy, that you're able to complete at MCC. There are a handful of classes we can take while we wait, like philosophy, ethics, etc., and then there are about 9 classes we have to take once we're done with our ADN. My goal is just to get as many of those classes out of the way before I start, and over next summer, so my BSN hopefully wont come too far after I'm done working on the ADN.

I'm meeting with someone from U of D at the University Center this week to go over what classes I have left to take, so I'll let know if I learn anything more, or you can call them and set up an appointment for yourself as well! Hope this helps!

Wow - thanks for the information! Is the U of D tuition at the University Center the same as on their campus? I think it was something like $750 per credit! I will have to schedule an appointment with them also.

I just read that your friend ranked at 201 - that is so hard. My daughter applied for the program also and her GPA was quite a bit higher than mine but she struggled on the HESI. Her averaged scores were not much less than mine and she did not make alternate either! It has been a bittersweet week in our house - my heart is breaking for her.

It seems like all we do is hurry up and wait!

The tuition question is my biggest question.... because if it's that much, I'm going to have to look elsewhere, unless there is some crazy scholarship or something I can qualify for. I'm also going to look into Wayne State and see what needs to be done for them. I contemplating eventually going on to become a Physicians Assistant, and they have a program at WSU, so it may be better to complete my BSN with them anyways? My husband is like, JUST TAKE ONE THING AT A TIME! But if I'm not starting until March, then I want to start working on it. I'm sick of waiting around and doing nothing. The "hurry up and wait" is a great motto for the nursing programs! And any info I find out for the BSN I will pass your way! I'm sorry about your daughter not getting it this time around :( Is she going to try again?

Have we figured out what we might be needing as far as supplies? I read in a few different places that we will need white leather shoes, a watch with a second hand, stethoscope, white lab coat/scrubs (which we buy through a company called "Dove" I believe).... what else?

The Tuitions for UDM is a litter cheaper on the University center Campus. Like $500 something per credit. One thing to knw though is that it is a 32 month program, and all on campus. Plus the cohorts only start when there are enough students ready. I am putting in my application soon, but as a back up.

There are many online programs in the area like Oaklans, MSU. they are much quicker to get through and start at regular intervals. Not to knock UDM, but 32 months is a long time. I recommend looking at the prereques for each and taking the ones that most schools accept first. Then as time goes by you can start focusing on classes that individual schools want, like speech.

Stats is a good class to start with, general chem, Lifespan development

WOW. those are things she didn't mention on the phone yesterday when I spoke to her! They stretch 10 classes over 32 months?! How is that possible?? I know their tuition is ridiculous.... when you say on campus, so you mean on their UDM campus, or University Center? I want to take some classes over summer, but the only ones I can get into (registration started march22, so everything is full) is an american lit and history class, but Im not sure if those are specific to the plan with UDM (i found i needed those classes from their Macomb?UDM transfer work sheet...

I spoke with someone at Macomb yesterday about the entry points and she told me that they would start you at a time that is most beneficial for both parties. I can't start in August (getting married) So She said to just email after the orientation and that it would be handled.

Well, if you're low in the ranking, you don't really get to pick. I'm 151 out of 159, so chances are, the earliest I'm looking at would be January, but it will probably be March. SO, that's why I'm looking into working on my gen. ed. classes for my BSN while I wait.

A4L4S- I called and spoke with that woman from UDM, and you're right, it is 32 months. So that basically like, 1 class a semester. You can do it on the University Center campus, to make it $560 a credit hour, instead of $780, but still. That's a lot.

I called WSU and they said they got rid of their RN-BSN program. I don't know where else to look? I want to figure this out ASAP, because I want to sign up and start taking basic classes towards the BSN, but every school's requirements are a little different, and I don't want to waste time and money in a class I may not potentially need.

Who did you find out the ranking from I just called them and they would not give out the info.
