LVN's in L&D ?

Hello Everyone ! I am going to school in May of 06' to be a LVN. My question is: Are LVN's generally used in L & D ? My goal is to eventually be a RN but for now I wouuld really like to work in that unit when I graduate. Any advice or tips would be great. Thanks- Sarah

Well, I will tell you it is hard....but it depends on your state...........

I just got hired in L&D but I have been a nurse for 22 years....and KNOW it is a big deal to get hired on this unit B/c I don't have an RN yet...... all the best to you. Scarlett

Thanks for the information. I called my local hospital in CA and there are LVN's in L&D. So we will see what happens when I graduate. Please keep me updated on how you like it in that unit as a LVN. The thing I'm not quite sure about is what role they play. Thanks again -Sarah

I work Labor/delivery/postpartum. I get to do it all. I work in a small hospital though and that makes the difference. The big hospitals around here only hire RNs. I went to L&D as a GVN!! I Love it!

It's regional I suppose. Around here, I can't think of one hospital that hires LPNs into L and D, especially. A few may have them in mother-baby, however. But it's rare to find a hospital that hires LPNs into L/D.

Hello and thanks for the reply. Does mother-baby mean all the care after delivery? Also what state do you work in? Also if it does become very hard for me to get a job in L& D is there another unit you could recommend? -Sarah

I work in WA State. Mother-baby means care of mothers/babies after birth, yes. Usually the bigger hospitals are the only ones where you will find LVN/LPN's working in OB and then, often, only in mother-baby, not directly in labor/delivery itself. In our state, scope of care for LPN's is a bit more limited, unfortunately, to make the use of LPN's in labor/delivery helpful. It does depend on state, what the LPN/LVN scope is. When I was in Oklahoma, we had a couple of LPN's on my unit. But they did not do actual labor/delivery as primary nurses; they worked with newborns and PP moms.

Good luck; I hope you find your dream. Start checking w/the Human Resource departments in the hospitals around you to see if LPN's are used in L/D or PP/Mother-baby. Good luck to you.

GVN is graduated vocational nurse, before you go and take your nclex to become LVN. I work in texas. Every hospital is different so it pays to check around. I do get to labor the patient and do the delivery. The RN does the baby only in my hospital (right after the delivery that is). So we play a big part in the unit. Good luck on your search, labor and delivery is an awesome area to work!

Well there are a few reasons, I can get right in to a private school w/out finishing all my pre-req's. Its 1 year. BUT it's $24,000 and thats a whole lot of money to spend especially when LVN's at hospitals in my area start at about $15.00.Also I think part of me is very scared about starting the RN program right now. I think if I took the baby steps to be a RN it would be easier on me. If I went to a city college I have about 3 more pre-reqs to finish. Then the 2 year nursing program. Do you have any advice? I could really use it.

I think I want to move to Texas now. That's so great how much of a role you play in L&D. Do you think about going back to get your RN ? The school I'm thinking about going to is $24,000. and thats alot of money so I still have alot to think about. Any advice would be great ! Thanks for all your help.
