It depends on what type of nursing you are going to do. I deal with Maggots but I work in an area where there can be lots of wounds that need it. THere are some specialities that will never see maggot therapy.
I wouldn't base your career choice on one single therapy that you may never see.
I believe I will end up working in nursing home since hospitals don't want to hire lvn's anymore. I am more concern about patients that have wounds and maggots coming out of the wounds than maggot therapy.
Do seniors in nursing homes have a lot of bedsores? what if they have maggots? I think I'll pass out if I see something like that , I am so afraid of maggots but I really want to be a nurse
.
I think ER would see the type of maggots that you don't want to see.
If maggots develop in a bedsore in a nursing home... LEAVE that facility before it gets shut down.
Did you just see that show on the health channel where that guy came into the ER with a crawling wound??? That was gross!!! BUT they did a good job of cleaning. :wink2: Is that what made you wnder how often this is seen?
be strong!

What's the difference, I thought a maggot was a maggot and they all do the same job, they clean the wound, and why do you assume this is a nursing home problem.
never heard of maggot therapy or seen a maggot on a patient(the only time actully that i have ever seen any was when I went on vacation for 2 1/2 weeks and the person who was supposed to takeout my trash didnt....in the dead of summer!!) is this a commonly used technique?....i know someone said in a special feild it was but Ive heard of using leaches before....never maggots! interesting!- ya learn somethign new everyday!

I was asking because I was told to avoid nursing homes and ER if I don't want to see maggots. I really don't know anything about nursing homes, I am just starting my lvn program.
Thank you all

Do LVN's have to clean patients w/ maggots, & how often do they have to deal with them. I am an LVN student and I don't think I'll be able to clean a patient w maggots, I am so afraid of any kind of worms, that's my worst phobia.
Please let me know because If have to deal w/ maggots I prefer to look for another career.
