LVN CE credits

I have a question regarding my license renewal and CE credits. According to the BVNPT website, A&P and Micro count as CE credits. I called the board and the person that answered said yes it does count but she could not tell me exactly how many credits I can count for each class ad how to fill in the form on the back of the renewal. She said that if the class was 3 units then it was about 30 credits. Has anyone ever used these classes for CE credits?

I put down all of my nursing classes for my first renewal that I had to show CEUs for. I can't remember how many CEUs I put for each class. I think I used a formula that I got from somewhere. It ended up being tremendous overkill for just the 30 CEUs necessary.

Someone at your school should be able to tell you how many credits to put down. That is probably where I got my info even though I don't remember it. However, I was listing nursing courses, not courses like micro and A&P.

Don't you need a Provider Number, and then get approval as to how many CE hours will be given by the Provider?

When I asked the lady at the BVNPT she was giving vague answers. She told me it was something about a three unit class meets 3 hours per week times the length of the course is ABOUT 30 hours. It sounds right but I would like to make sure before I send in my renewal and I get audited and they say it is wrong. It is my license to lose not the Boards!! I called back on Friday to speak to someone in the Education Depatment but they have not called me back.

I finally got the answer...

I got someone to actually call me back fron the LVN board. It was actually the guy that is in charge of the CEUs. They give 18 hours of CE credit for every 1 unit. My 5 unit Microbiology class is worth 90 CEUs.

I'm on my friend's login. I use to work for BVNPT. 18 hours is not correct, I believe it's either 12 or 15 but definitely not 18. I don't know where he is getting the 18 hours as that is what we used in evaluations to gain months for qualifying and it definitely was not the same amount (which I always thought odd). A 3 unit class will do it though. You cannot count blood/IV if you used that to get it on your license (no double dipping). Pre-reqs and RN classes count toward CEU's (no provider number necessary).

Since I answered the phones for breaks/lunches and still have friends who work there, just some helpful hints to make your renewal time a little saner........

Send in EARLY, (6 weeks+)do not wait until the last minute. Trust me when I tell you that they've heard every story and they cannot put you ahead of others.

Send your renewal certified or some method to verify receipt as no one can check to see if they received it. All funds are locked in a secure area until they are cashiered. The renewals (PO BOX)are sent to the main Department of Consumer Affairs cashiering which also cashiers doctors, contractors, pest control, etc.

Make sure you check all boxes. Have you had a conviction, write in the name and hours of your CEU's, make sure you sign the renewal. You do not need to send in documents for your CEU's as they are not kept or filed. They are destroyed after a few months. Keep them for 4 years if audited. Read the info on the fingerprint requirements for those licensed years ago.

Check the online verification after 3 weeks, if nothing email the address on the website to see if there is a problem. Usually someone did not sign their renewal, forgot to check the conviction box or write in their CEU's.

I didn't really want to transfer however, as my friend said...they are severly swamped and they are one of the few state offices I have worked for that was continually busy, no one sitting around, everyone chipped in to try to get the work done. They use to work a lot of overtime but the governor has cut that out also. It's a small office and unfortunately, CA is one of the few states that license by equivalency so you have people from all over applying for LVN licensure, both international and in the US. Now having to take 3 Fridays off is hurting them badly.

Wow, thanks for taking the time to give us the information. I imagine they are always very busy, I used to have a hard time getting them on the phone. Once you do however, they are very nice and helpful.

The fingerprint thing I found somewhat confusing. I KNOW I had fingerprints done a long time ago when I got my license, the old inky way. So I wasn't sure if I needed the LiveScan or not. It's just another fee at this point. :cry:

I'm babysitting for my friend again so on her computer. If you did the old ink cards, you probably have to do the livescan. I still work nearby so see my friends daily there. The livescans are a good deal enacted in emergency by the legislators after a newspaper found some RNs who had convictions and didn't record them on their renewals so the trust factor had to be taken away. With the livescan, if you have an arrest it is automatically sent to any agency who you had a livescan done for. It's a protection tool.

BTW, I asked my old manager and CEU's are figured at 12 hours a unit.

Too bad the dishonest ones make it harder for the rest of us but I do understand, it's to protect the public. :up:
