LSUHSC CARE Program Information

Published

Hi. I am applying for entry to LSU's CARE program for my Accelerated BSN degree in August 2008. I am just getting ready to send my application off, and was wondering if anyone here has done this program, or is currently enrolled in it.

Mainly, I'm curious about the admissions standards. I have always been a very good student, and maintained above a 3.5 in college. I also have an advanced professional degree in another field. I am hoping these things will make me an attractive candidate for the school. I am curious how competitve the program is, especially for someone who is not a Louisiana resident.

Also, I'm wondering what the program is like. I know that it's got to be pretty intense if it wraps up all the nursing education into 18 months. What is a typical schedule like? How many hours a day and things like that?

I'm really excited about this opportunity, and looking forward to reading any responses here. Also, if anyone is currently applying as well, I'd love to connect with you so we can bite our nails together.

Congratulations to your friend! We must be next : )

Time is going by sooooo slow. Maybe they will be sent out early since they didn't receive a ton of applications?

Should we be applying for financial aid just in case......i think the priority deadline is soon.

HURRY END OF MONTH!

I've already applied for financial aid. Can't hurt to think positive! And if I don't make it into the CARE program, I'll likely take a couple of classes at Delgado in the fall so I included them on the list of where to send the report.

Good catch about the priority deadline! According to LSU's website the deadline is April 15th! If anyone has not done so yet, you might want to file the FAFSA.

Thanks so much! Im pretty sure the traditional bsn's go out a bit before the care programs letters...we were told mid april...so dont drive yourself crazy if you dont get yours now Im pretty sure yalls will be the end of April/beginning of May! Thanks again and good luck!!!

Yeah, I'm not expecting anything until early-mid May but I can hope that there might be something in the mailbox any day now, right? :D Before I know it, I'll have "hoped" my way into May and the time really will be here! Haha!

I wish they would send them already too! I hate waiting like this!!

I can't take it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hurry letter! Hurry!

Looking at some older posts from last year I saw that some people received their letter as early as April 30th.

Almost here!!!! (not sure what this smiley is emoting....but I like it)

lsunursingstudent01: i am starting to formulate a backup

plan in case of not getting accepted into olol accelerated, so here are my questions regarding the care plan (which i just learned about recently). i would sincerely appreciate your feedback.

i have a bs from uno in psych. (2006)

is there any sort of tuition forgiveness from area hospitals or clinics in exchange for contract to work?

- depending on where you work there is some tuition reimbursement plans for loans only! you have to have a loan to get it. ochsner for example runs 1200 a quarter they will pay you for loans, but its facility dependant.

i also had a question regarding the prerequisite requirements: is there a link that shows which transfer credits are accepted, or could i have my transcripts from uno & delgado sent and evaluated, or possibly even a face to face?

- you would be better off doing a face to face with someone from admissions, that way you can clear up any confusion they may have.

also, i have taken a&p i & lab at delgado. i made a c in this class only because i had to miss a couple of classes due to giving birth to my son in nov 08. i didn't want to slow down the progress! i did manage a b in the lecture and my overall gpa w/ uno is 3.621 & currently w/ delgado is 3.5, which should increase after this semester of chem & micro. would i need to or be able to retake that course (a&pi lab w/ the dreaded "c") for consideration in the care program? i am in progress w/chemistry & microbiology this semester (no labs) and enrolled for a&p ii & micro lab for the summer at delgado. i do not have a & p ii lab completed. is this class a necessary prerequisite for the care program?

-this question you would have to take up with the admissions dept. its very “how do i feel today” as to what they do. so its def. best to take it up with them.

any other questions… just send em over!

I appreciate the time. Should I get any standardized tests out of the way? They offered to do a sit-down transcript evauation w/ me & also informed that A&P doesn't transfer b/c they want you to take their A&P, so I guess I will get busy on the process. How many different science courses do they look at from your transcript? I have Chem, Geol, Biol, A&P, etc.. all As & Bs, one C in A&P I lab. I made a C in SOC when I took it as a sophomore about 100 years ago...

No problem. As far as standardized tests... i dont believe their are any to complete but i may be wrong. As far as how many science courses you need i dont know becuase they just revamped the entrance criteria so im not sure of the new info. sorry.

I am basically trying to get into a program that is is 2 years or less for an ADN or BSN (I already have the BS in Psych that I went to school forever and a day for). My goal is to start working ASAP, and work on furthering my degree as I am gaining experience and salary. I am thoroughly looking into Charity SN also because I go to Delgado already and it is a well-known school, but I just don't know if I can go through 4 more semesters of not working, as I have been for the last 2 semesters.

Can anyone give their 2 cents as to whether or not (if I don't get into an accelerated RN), an LPN program would be wise? I really don't have any experience in healthcare, so on that level I don't feel "overqualified," but at the same time, I have soooo much school and science and match, etc under my belt, that I could probably go straight into nursing courses, be done in 2 semesters or so and start working as an LPN, then go for ADN or BSN while working. Does this seem feasible? I appreciate all opinions and advice from others who have already been through it.

the only problem with an LPN is they are becoming harder and harder to find jobs. many facilities are only hiring the RN's. *just a little heads up*

Hi Kitty:

I replied to your post today. I am currently at Charity. I am not an LPN but I know people who are and all of them went back to school for RN. You said that you don't work right now. There is a big gap in cost of tuition between the two schools. You are already at Delgado which I think may help you being an applicant. Have you looked at part-time jobs? How about trying to work in a pharmacy or a hospital? Some places will work with your schedule and you could work every other weekend or a few days a week. In the long run it is your decision but you will have more options as an RN than LPN. Both schools are good but it's your choice of RN in 2 yrs or BSN in 3 yrs. Remember there are online BSN options too after Charity. Or just apply to both schools and then make a decision. Just trying to help. Good luck.
