LSUHSC CARE Program Information

Published

Hi. I am applying for entry to LSU's CARE program for my Accelerated BSN degree in August 2008. I am just getting ready to send my application off, and was wondering if anyone here has done this program, or is currently enrolled in it.

Mainly, I'm curious about the admissions standards. I have always been a very good student, and maintained above a 3.5 in college. I also have an advanced professional degree in another field. I am hoping these things will make me an attractive candidate for the school. I am curious how competitve the program is, especially for someone who is not a Louisiana resident.

Also, I'm wondering what the program is like. I know that it's got to be pretty intense if it wraps up all the nursing education into 18 months. What is a typical schedule like? How many hours a day and things like that?

I'm really excited about this opportunity, and looking forward to reading any responses here. Also, if anyone is currently applying as well, I'd love to connect with you so we can bite our nails together.

Ohh.. just and update looking at beejaycee's answer.. it looks like we will be hearing something back in the beginning of May! Great!

Good luck everyone!

Congrats on getting this far! :yeah: We don't always see it that way but we have now done everything we can up to this point and that in itself is nothing to sneer at. And if your interview session was like mine, you had current students doing the interview. I'm sure they understand and remember what it was like.

Thanks, congrats to you as well. Yes, it was with current student and like you said hopefully they remember what it was like!!

Weight off your shoulders, huh? Great job!

I had such an adrenaline rush coming out of my interview that I thought I did awesome. Then, once I came down from that rush, I started thinking about my answers and kicking myself in the behind for some of my boneheaded answers.

Then again, maybe they weren't really that boneheaded! LOL! I hope I'm not speaking for myself here when I say this is how I felt! If anything, I think came across as normal, down to Earth, and not fake. I see that as positive!

And yes, we made it this far. We (at the very least) know we qualify for consideration! I'm excited! I hope we're all classmates in August!

You right! And I'm sure you did great... like you said you were REAL, and I think that is what they are looking for. Anyway, I really hope to be classmates too! Hopefully now we can start to relax, and I look forward to hearing from you sometime in May! Take care! And thanks for the support!

Hi! I'm new to this site, but I had to join to converse with you guys. I applied for the program and did not get in last year, so I re-applied to this program and I have already been accepted to Charity as a backup for my fall semester. My question is this, to anyone in the program, do you think I hurt myself in the interview by asking if it was possible to make A's? I have never been so focused on etting A's, nor have I let that control me, but when I didn't get in last year because of too many B's from my past it started to make me wonder. I told them though that the only reason I asked was through not getting accepted the first time around to the CARE, that it concerned me about being competitive for masters programs in the future. I think I got it across to them that I want to do well and I'm not solely focused on the letter I receive. Any comments? Do you think I should not have asked that? I was myself, so I hope not.

Welcome NolaStudent14,

Hi!

I had to reply when I read your post... I am a little worried about my interview as well. However, the one important thing to remember.. like you said is it's important to be yourself, and you did just that. One of my interview questions was something to the effect of how would I deal with not getting A's ? I just replied that I will always try my best and give it my all , but if I get anything lower, perhaps a B or C then I will not kill myself. lol I said that's all I can do, and try and improve maybe change studying habits, etc. to improve my performance.

Anyway, I hope I didn't hurt myself by saying that, but it's the truth I'm not hell bent on getting straight A's. I think they just want to get a feel for you, because they know it's a very tough program and it's not very likely anyone will pull off a 4.0. Anyway, that's just my take on it... and I'm not sure if I'm right.

This is my first time applying and I don't think I did to well on my interview .. but I guess we all just have to wait and see, as nerveracking as it is!!!!

The program director said in my interview that the reason they ask about the "A's" is because they know inorder to apply to this program you have to have an above average gpa so they know we are all use to making good grades. Not to say we are all going to struggle and make bad grades, but it's going to be more challenging.

Well I hope this helps you out some! Just try and take it easy and relax, atleast you have a backup plan!

Please keep us all posted and good luck !

NOLAstudent14,

I dont think that your question will be a critical deciding factor of admittance. I would not worry about it if I were you :smokin:

But when you say:

"when I didn't get in last year because of too many B's from my past it started to make me wonder."

How do you think you did on your interview that time?

Also, everyone......this waiting thing is so nerve racking....

Im even more nervous now that NOLAstudent14 said that too many B's may have been their downfall. I have alot of B's...some A's and a single horrible haunting C!:banghead:

Does anyone think that a good interview and statement of purpose could maybe override the Bs and C?

I cannot wait til MAY!!!!! I hope we all get in!!!

Keep the faith, nomoreIT! The powers-that-be behind the CARE program realize that we are generally not traditional students. During one of my conversations with someone at LSU I remember being told that our GPA makes up ~40% of our 'score' for determining acceptance. Yes, the GPAs of the students are good but they want a student who will succeed, not not a student who will freak out because s/he got a C on her/his last exam and it throws her/him off for the rest of the semester.

As for Bs and a C, what does that say about you? Where you persistent and slogged through a tough time, did you have to reorient priorities to accommodate an unusual situation or did you melt down, give up, take your toys and go home? A C is a war wound incurred on the educational battlefield! :D Of course, I'm in the same boat as everyone else as I wait to hear back from LSU so this is just my :twocents:. (Once we adjust for inflation, I still owe $1.47 for the preceding opinion. :p)

Hey guys,

Do you think they will contact our present employers as listed on our application?

I was just wondering, because if I don't get into the program I wouldn't want to be out of a job too.

I'm not being pessimistic about getting in, I still have my fingers crossed and am excited, but just in case.....

Also,

did anyone else apply or plan to apply to another program as a backup?

I haven't.

?:nurse:?

Thanks for all of the help guys! I have actually met with the head of the CARE program, several times now. Last year there were no interviews and the top 50 people had a 3.67 or above and that's all that was looked at. So my 3.55 did not make the cut. I have a 3.7 now, but that's going to count for I think 20% and the interview was 30%. It seems like things are going to be a lot smoother this year, and I've heard from a friend that not many people had completed applications (actually the numbers look like they are about half as much as they were last year)! I feel a lot better about the interview. I hope you all do well,a nd let mw know if you need anything!

There is a background check done on students but I don't know when it is done or how far it goes. If it is done ONLY on students (or students-to-be)... Gosh, I hope they don't call my boss. I'm self-employed and I know what a butthead I am! :chuckle

I do have a Plan B (and a Plan C, for that matter) so I'm a lot calmer about getting in. But I WAAAAAAAANNNNNA get in! :bluecry1: I've applied with Charity for the Spring 10 class.
