LSUHSC CARE Program Information

Published

Hi. I am applying for entry to LSU's CARE program for my Accelerated BSN degree in August 2008. I am just getting ready to send my application off, and was wondering if anyone here has done this program, or is currently enrolled in it.

Mainly, I'm curious about the admissions standards. I have always been a very good student, and maintained above a 3.5 in college. I also have an advanced professional degree in another field. I am hoping these things will make me an attractive candidate for the school. I am curious how competitve the program is, especially for someone who is not a Louisiana resident.

Also, I'm wondering what the program is like. I know that it's got to be pretty intense if it wraps up all the nursing education into 18 months. What is a typical schedule like? How many hours a day and things like that?

I'm really excited about this opportunity, and looking forward to reading any responses here. Also, if anyone is currently applying as well, I'd love to connect with you so we can bite our nails together.

I have a 3.7 now, but that's going to count for I think 20% and the interview was 30%.

If the interview was 30% and our GPA is 20%, did she say where the other 50% came from?

I must have misunderstood that the GPA was 40%. Or, given that you say there were no interviews last year, perhaps the grading is flexible. :thnkg:

It seems like things are going to be a lot smoother this year, and I've heard from a friend that not many people had completed applications (actually the numbers look like they are about half as much as they were last year)! I feel a lot better about the interview. I hope you all do well,a nd let mw know if you need anything!

This is my first time applying to CARE and a current student mentioned (before my interview) that there were 90 applicants interviewing. I thought that was a really low number. There were so many application requirements, though, I can see how someone might miss something on the application and be taken out of consideration. I must've gone over the list of requirements 50 times - checking and rechecking that I had everything together!

NOLAstudent14,

Do you have any idea how many applicants we are up against? I heard there were a total of 80 -90 ish... and that came from the current student interviewers. Anyway, you also said that not many had completed applications, I'm hoping they were weeded out before the interview process. Because I beleive the website says only people with completed applications will be asked to interview.

One more thing, I'm kinda freaking out about the interview being weighted so heavily! I can't believe it's more than our GPA!

Well I guess all's we can do is wait. Write me back if you get a minute! I'd love to hear what you think!

Thanks !

When we ask the question "how do you deal with not getting an A" the answer we were looking for was that you gave it your all and you tried your hardest. The faculty and administration will say CARE classes lose most of their people because of the $$ situation. As a care student i feel that this is not the case. We lose people becuase of their grades and the stress that is associated when people dont always get their "A". Being this is a second round of school for you all, some have come into CARE with straight A's and have difficulty coping with getting a B, C, D or even an F on a test. It will happen. There is NO ONE in CARE that has a 4.0. By asking that question we were seeing what would happen if you didnt get that "A"?!

As far as the interveiws, if you were speaking true and not "putting" on a show, you did GREAT!

Just wanted to say thanks lsunursingstudent01!

I felt like that was meant for me to read! I've been so nervous about the interview, but the answer you said you all wanted to hear about "not getting an A" is pretty much the exact answer I gave. I was real and based on how nervous I was I think they could tell I was not "putting on a show". Thanks for your insight, it really calms my nerves a bit!

:yeah:

Have a great weekend!

no problem, feel free to ask any questions, i have 2 yrs of expirence with all the CARE FUN!

Yikes! Thinking back, I think I might have sounded like too much of a perfectionist in my interview. That's definitely one of my more negative traits but I don't freak out if I get a low grade. Well, at least they saw my true self in there. I'm not going to stop freaking till I get the "yay" or "nay" in the mail! This thread has calmed me down a bit, though! Thanks everyone!

I just had to vent/freak out a bit here! My friend received her acceptance for the traditional BSN program today! Now I'm really antsy for them to send out CARE decisions!

lsunursingstudent01: i am starting to formulate a backup plan in case of not getting accepted into olol accelerated, so here are my questions regarding the care plan (which i just learned about recently). i would sincerely appreciate your feedback.

[color=#000]i have a bs from uno in psych. (2006)

is there any sort of tuition forgiveness from area hospitals or clinics in exchange for contract to work?

i also had a question regarding the prerequisite requirements: is there a link that shows which transfer credits are accepted, or could i have my transcripts from uno & delgado sent and evaluated, or possibly even a face to face?

also, i have taken a&p i & lab at delgado. i made a c in this class only because i had to miss a couple of classes due to giving birth to my son in nov 08. i didn't want to slow down the progress! i did manage a b in the lecture and my overall gpa w/ uno is 3.621 & currently w/ delgado is 3.5, which should increase after this semester of chem & micro. would i need to or be able to retake that course (a&pi lab w/ the dreaded "c") for consideration in the care program? i am in progress w/chemistry & microbiology this semester (no labs) and enrolled for a&p ii & micro lab for the summer at delgado. i do not have a & p ii lab completed. is this class a necessary prerequisite for the care program?

hopefully this wasn't too confusing. if you need any clarification, let me know. thanks a lot.

Chapookie, where does your friend live? Im in lafayette waiting to hear from the traditional bsn program! also i have major anxiety about opening it...do you happen to know what the beginning of the letter said? hahaha

My friend is in the Lakeview area of New Orleans (I think). She received her Charity acceptance 2 days before I did (I live in Kenner), so I think she just gets her mail out of downtown faster. I'm not sure about the actual letter, I just got a happy text message!

Thanks so much! Im pretty sure the traditional bsn's go out a bit before the care programs letters...we were told mid april...so dont drive yourself crazy if you dont get yours now Im pretty sure yalls will be the end of April/beginning of May! Thanks again and good luck!!!
