I recently had a couple of nurses tell me that LPN's are just basically glorified aids in LTC settings.
I though that LPN's did mostly the same work as RN's in the LTC setting.
I know that everyone needs to be a team and pitch in and get whatever needs to be done, done. But LPN's as glorified aids? Why go to LPN school then?
What are typical LPN duties in a LTC setting?

We get some of that abuse also in Ontario and across the country. It would do us all well to learn to wrok together for quality patient care no matter where we work. there is plenty of work out there for everyone. As we all know there is a nursing shortage worldwide, so why would anyone waste our time putting another health care provider down.
In Ontario LPN/RPNs are unit leaders, doing medications, doctors orders, treatments, family interactions, assessments, etc.
I think people who put others down suffer from huge insecurities.

Unfortunatley, some nurses have ego problems/insecurities and dump their rage and anger on their colleagues. The behavior is unprofessional. WE ARE ALL PART OF THE HEALTHCARE TEAM (MDs, RNS, LPNs, CNAs, Social Workers, Occupational/Vocational/Recreational Therapists, Dietary, Housekeeping, Maintenance/Engineering, Patient Relations, Security, Information Systems and YES Administration, etc). Successful patient care requires good team playing skills. Each team member's role/function is important.
One healthcare member can't do it alone.
Since when is bedside nursing not part of our standards of care? Is this not the time that a head to toe assessment should be done. There have been many times I have heard the same comments. It makes me a little angry to think that a RN would say this, perhaps she should reexamine the reason why she went into nursing. If she's not doing patient care what is she doing? I for one would hate to be pushing papers and crunching numbers it would certainly make me feel a little discontent too. Long gone are the days when a RN rolls up her sleeves and pitches in when staffing is short. I am Proud to be an LPN!!!!! It is an honour and a priveledge to care for the elderly! WHY can't we put our insecurities aside and work together?
I was a LPN for 10 years and loved it...then became a RN ...worked for 11 plus years and now am employed at JC Penney.
I was unable to find a job...they didn't trust me?? whatever............
Penney's has treated me well and the stress is low, however the pay is lower...and that is what I miss....
When I worked in LTC the LPNs did as much as the RN... except for starting IVs and certain infusions ....we were smarter???
Lots of time I always checked with an experienced LPN who knew how and what to do just as much as I knew...
Hopefully they will not get rid of the LPN. The RNs would all be fighting over who the boss was and who was right.

I agree topic is slighty old. The majority of all the nurses agree. 1) Weare all important. 2) No one disagrees that RNs have more training-this
does mean in most cases A. they make more money B. this does not
make ALL Rns better nurses. 3) Every state has a different practice act
for all nurses-we would be wise to follow that. 4) No one would have been
upset, if that nurse from Cape Cod, had not stated in so many words that
she would not want an LPN to take care of her. All nurses be well take
care of the Pts. and continue to learn because it can only benefit you and
those you take care of
I NEVER stated that I wouldn't want an LPN to take care of me..I know some mighty good ones. What I said was, I wouldn't want someone who had become an LPN in 3 months to take care of me.

Again people, no one can legally become an LPN in 3 months. No legitimate such program exists in any part of this country and I really wish people would stop repeating this on this board because it's not true and if it is, let's see some proof!
I want any BON website or even a graduate of such a program to confirm that it is possible and LPN licenses can be granted to such graduates.
More garbage.
