LPN Student with offer to work as a PRn in Ohio

Published

Hello All,

I am in my 2nd week of LPN school. My Mother is a RN and works at a university Hospital here in Ohio. Her supervisor told her that I could put in for an open position as a PRN in the MED SERG Unit. I have a few questions. 1st What qualifications does one need to work as a PRN. Like I said I just started LPN school and have very little knowledge of how things work and run in a hospital. 2nd What is MED SERG? 3rd do you think it would benefit me as a student to work this position while I am a full time student. Any insight you might have you be great. Thanks

Huh??? Wait S-L-O-W D-O-W-N!!!

Whaddyamean "offer to work PRN as LPN"? You haven't even passed any tests yet?!!! How could they offer you a job w/o a license? Do you mean it's a job offer for after you pass boards? I think you need to re-state your question.

1. It is illegal to work as a nurse (any kinda nurse) w/o a valid license

2. PRN is not a good idea right after graduating (AFTER GRADUATING)

3. If you don't know what Med-Surg is...don't work it!

I don't think it says anywhere in the post that she wants to work as an LPN PRN. I think it might be PRN as a tech or student nurse - but the original post is not super clear as the position is stated as "a PRN" rather than describing the type of schedule offered.

So to the OP - what is the position you are talking about? We'll be glad to help if this is clarified.

I think the original poster thinks "a PRN" is the title of some kind of position in the hospital.

To the OP, PRN is a latin abbreviation for pro re nata, which basically means as needed. The job is probably some kind of tech or CNA job where your schedule will be casual and you wont be held to working a certain shift or certain number of hours per week.

I am a bit surprised you don't know what a med-surg floor is...I'm pretty sure I knew that before I even considered going into nursing.

this is from the web site i had to go fill out the app.

detailed position description

works under the direction of a responsible rn to provide safe, efficient, age-specific nursing care to patients and families in order to assist them to attain, maintain, regain and/or sustain optional health status.

essential duties include:

direct patient examination and monitoring.

direct patient care delivery (includes adl's, hygiene measures, select treatments, patient/family education, discharge preparation).

communication and documentation of interventions and observations.

participation in quality improvement process.

involved in learning and self-improvement.

as for not know what med-surg is before starting school. i'm sorry but i do believe that is the reason i'm going to school, to learn what this mean's. i'm sure if i took a wild guess it would a ward/department in the hospital for patients either prior to surgery, post surgery. then again like i said i'm in school to learn things like that.

now that i read more on the web site i see that is this is a nursing asst. that makes more sense to me know. i just didn't understand (like you) how i was being offered a job after on 2 weeks of school.

thank you all for responding.

Specializes in Hospice.

OK.. To answer your questions:

If you can take the training class to be a nursing assistant, or it is offered as part of the job, it would be a great help to you to work at this position while going to school. You will do and see things that you may not get to see in nursing school clinical.

Oh, and Med SURG stands for Medical / Surgical, and refers to the type of unit the position works on. In a Med Surg unit, there are usually a mix of cases, with a broad range of diagnosis. A good place to get experience.

Good luck with school!
