I am from MS and I hope to get all my pre-reqs out of the way for the RN program before starting the LPN program. I am wondering what is a good credited school for RN to LPN online? How do I check if my state will allow me to use the online program to be eligible to take the NCLEX-RN? I wouldn't want to waste money and time on a online program when I wouldn't be able to take the test and go to work asap because my state doesn't recognize it. Thankyou for advice.:wink2:
Yeah, it is online. Just call and talk to the advisors at Excelsior for yourself and don't listen to folks that don't know what they are talking about. The program is all online and you have to travel out of state for the clinicals, and you might have to travel within your state for the proctored exams. Some of the proctored areas would be a Sylvan learning center. Anyway, Excelsior is not a cheap school so you will need some form of financial aid if you aren't willing to pay out of your pocket.
Txspadequeen is actually an Excelsior College student who is nearly finished, so she really does know what she's talking about. What she was referring to is the distinction that EC is distance learning, not truly online -- at least for the Associates degree portion of EC's program. "Online" is a misnomer in this case, and one that annoys our dear txspadequeen to no end.
Just a little more info for you: the exams are taken at Pearson Professional Centers (http://www.pearsonvue.com), not Sylvan (I believe it used to be Sylvan a few years ago). The clinical exam sites are at various hospitals in Wisconsin, New York, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Ohio, and Texas.
I found EC's costs to be very reasonable ... especially now that I'm looking at RN-BSN programs! Many people do EC's program in a pay-as-you-go manner and avoid student loans.
I don't believe that anyone was trying to be rude. To clarify EC is not an online program it is considered distance learning. You do not "attend" class online or have assignments it is a self study test based program. You study the required material, then pay the fee to take the tests. EC is definitely not a waste of time but it is not for everyone.
Well, if you want to get all technical about it a self-study based program would be considered "Independent Study" and not distance learning. I mean come on folks, we know that everyone considers any program that is done mainly through the internet as an "online program". Her statement did come across as rude. It is not always what you say, it is HOW you say it. Besides, why would anyone waste time trying to make the distinction anyway? Excelsior is still considered and referenced by most people as an online program. That is like saying, "Is it potato or patata?" LOL It is just senseless to argue about that.
She really has never appeared rude to me. It is just one of her pet peeves per say. We all have those quirks where we sometimes have to get on our soap boxes. LOL! She is an asset here,as she is another one of the seasoned posters, and can be very helpful should you need to call on her. She does know her stuff, and she is from Texas...how bad could she be? LOL...Had to say that since I am too. Traci

Parts of the EC's programs ARE online -- many of the BSN and MSN classes, for example. But when someone is asking about program specifics, I think it's important to make the distinction so that people have a better idea of what they're getting into. Distance learning is much more independent and lacks the structure/direction/interaction of actual online classes, and some people aren't suited to it.
Personally, I enjoyed the distance learning format very much. We'll see how I do with the actual online format when I return to school. :)

I've always enjoyed the online program formats, because there are due dates and they move you along quickly throughout the course. You have to be really disciplined to do a Independent study course. If you aren't the type to procrastinate on things, Independent study is the way to go.
well i do know what i am talking about. i am a ec student waiting on the cpne. you study at home for your test and then go take them at person vue..its just that simple. there is no classes online ..there is no online student teacher interaction with the exception of the epn... please explain to me people what is online about this program...and yes this is my huge pet peeve . i did not mean to offend anyone with my statement just merely making a fast point because i was walking out the door for my 16 hour shift.

the reason is there is a huge difference in independent studying and online courses. for the ec program you need true motivation to complete these test and there is no one there to push you to finish. however, most online courses are filled with calendars and deadlines and people are more able to keep on track....so the main point is if you fall into ec thinking that you are in a online program and end up with a self study program you might not have a good fit.....oh and i do know what i am talking about here as well since my associate and bachelors degree is online and my ec associates is independent study...
