Lpn Or Rn?

Nurses General Nursing

Hello!

My daughter has been accepted into the LPN program this fall but is also on the Wait list at #10 for the RN program.

She is doubtful that she will get into RN program with being #10 on list. (the school only accepted 50 students).

I am concerned that if she goes into the LPN program that the school will basically ignore her being on the wait list for RN. However if she doesn't get all her ducks in a row soon she will miss out on the LPN program. I am not sure when the FINAL word will come that she is either accepted into RN program or not...

What do you all think? Should she go ahead into the LPN and later try for the RN program? Both programs are at the same

school.

Thank you in advance for your input!

#10 on a wait list isn't so bad. I got in to a program of 60 at the last second and I had been in the 90's on the list. Worst case she can finish all pre req work which I would recommend doing anyway.

I really think all future nurses should seriously consider being BSN RN's as this is becoming the basic degree to get a job especially in this economy...:twocents:

I think BSN is a fine idea but I am not seeing any requiring it as basic education. I have been doing a job search after being off a yr with family illnesses. So I am on internet every day and read a large amt of ads posted in many places.. Very few are even asking for BSN.. None are offering increased wages for BSN. Interviews I have gone on,, BSN has not come up and because I have 4 yrs of college but only ADN degree it used to come up in the past.

I have a good friend who just finished WOCN at Emory, works HH, still with same agency, of course she does have BSN but made the same as I did with ADN.. Now with WOCN she gets a whopping $1 more per hr.. and has to cover 7 counties.

I became RN in 1988 and they were swearing BSN would be made min education then.. maybe it will happen some day but not in near future in my opinion.

Could you please quote your sources for this opinion, in order to give it credibility?

I was remembering about 10 or so years ago when the ANA (not sure if this was who it was) wanted to change the requirements of all new nurses to have a BSN but it was shot down....of course they were going to grandfather in current ADN RN's..

I have noticed a definite decrease in hiring of nurses in our area due to budget cuts. With this economy it would make more since NOT to hire BSN's if they can pay an RN less... IMHO.

I don't believe at all that all are passed over because they don't have a BSN..

It also depends on what position you are applying to, of course.

If I were her, I would start the LPN program, but hold out for the RN program. I say this only because there seems to be a trend lately of hospitals phasing out LPNs. I am currently interviewing people for a couple of nursing positions we have available, and received a resume from an LPN who has been at a specific hospital for over 20 years. When asked why she was leaving the hospital, she informed me that the hospital phased out all LPNs and gave them only a 3-day notice before their jobs were terminated. If your daughter has the choice, she should certainly go for the RN program, or do the the LPN program and then bridge to RN. Just my opinion based on what I am starting to see from the trenches. Best of luck!!

Hi Nico,

Wow, you were #90 on the wait list or #30? I'm not sure I am understanding...

When did they let you know? It is now mid March and I am wondering when they will let her know...

Also she has to send in paperwork for LPN soon.... I worry that if she goes ahead and does that will the

school will just take her off wait list for RN?.... wondering if she should hang back and wait for final notification for RN..

Thanks!

Good advice...if you can go for it, go for it!!!:twocents::nurse::clown:

Please don't do all this for her. She needs to assume responsibility for her own education at this point. Sounds like she's got a great Mom! I'm really surprised she hasn't posted here herself, as other students have. Does she really want nursing...or do you want nursing FOR her?? Just askin'.

Specializes in Emergency Medicine.

You're asking for opinions so here is mine:

Now I'm not bashing current LPN's but to go to school now for LPN is a waste of time and money. LPN role in health care is being downsized and is in jeopardy of being eliminated altogether.

Even if it meant waiting another year I would spend the time/money on taking classes that were beneficial toward an RN degree and work on shoring-up the GPA to make her more competitive for a spot in next years class.

Meet with an adviser in the College of Nursing for guidance. Networking!

Meet as many people in the department and return there often to talk about the program. There is lip service and there is dedication. The dedicated individual is motivated to go after what they want. They are committed to going the distance and giving the time and effort required to get it done. The other just shows up expecting everything to be given to them.

Work on the GPA, get involved, take some extracurricular classes and activities that will make her more attractive for initial selection next time rather than the waiting list. Just my :twocents:

I am not doing anything for her...She doesn't even know I am posting.

She wants nursing(RN)..... I only posted to receive comments and or suggestions from other nurses out of curiosity as to what

they would do.

I in no way meant to degrade you or make you upset. I have just seen way too many students (as a nursing professor) that went into nursing because their mamma or dadddy felt it would be a good fit for them. Hope your daughter does well in her nursing program...whatever she chooses. Sorry if I offended you. I certainly didn't mean it the way it came out. :nurse:

I took no offense at all! And if I push my daughter she shoves me back:lol2:

Darn emails take on their on tones!

But if anything I have at times encouraged her to seek out a different occupation/degree.. :)

Thank you for your original reply as well as this one.

Is another college a possibility? Could she get financial aid and go somewhere with more options/openings? Can you ask college advisor if she enrolls for LPN do they take her off wait list? Would not seem ethical that they did. My opinion is LPN is a waste of time and money. She would be better off becoming medical assistant.
