LPN grad... advice on job hunting

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

Hi everyone;)

I passed my nclex-pn 12/10/10 woohoo! ... Now i'm starting to realize most employers (or at least here in Miami) are looking for candidates with at least 1+ years exp. It's highly frustrating... how can I meet this requirement without someone actually giving me a chance to get the experience?.. So far i've been sending out my resume/ filling apps online but I know that I can't rely entirely on the internet for a job so i've been calling local nursing homes/rehab centers and asking whomever answers the phone if they we're currently hiring LPN's. The answer 'NO'!! click!. Is it proper to inquire about a job over the tele? Or should I visit them in person (and ask)? Also, if anyone can give me advice/ tips on landing that first nursing job i'd gladly appreciate it. Thanks to everyone in advance.

No obviously not. The majority of RN's have sacrificed at lot to get where there are. But I am tired of off handed comments made to LPN's like "oh go back to school" like we don't know any better. Why tell us to go back and get our RN? Every LPN knows about this option and has it rubbed in their face on a daily basis. Most LPN's would love to go back if they could.

I reread the post. I think you took offense where there was none intended. In fact, the post pointed out that some hospitals are now restricting positions to BSNs only, so even RNs are feeling pressure.

I think rather an RN or LPN, we all worked very hard to get where we are!! Some of us want to go further and get are RN but alot of us like it just being and LPN. I think all nurses, RN's and LPN's are magnificent in what we do. We all make a difference in someone's life!

The first job I got as an newly licensed LPN was doing flu shots. Then when I was taking an RN pre-req class I started networking with employed LPNs. I managed to land a job in LTC through networking in that class.

Please note, I was willing to start anywhere. I am in west Tn. I am also a 53 year old male. Passed boards in Jan 2010. Get cheap fax machine for computer at house. 89.00 buys an all in in one fax/printer/scanner combo in most markets.

Brief cover letter, one page resume sent to DON or person hiring for the nursing dept.

Go online and down load list of nursing homes, hospitals and any facility that uses LPNs.

Google those 15 minutes from home, then 30 min from home, 45 min from home and 1 hr from home.

Call and ask who does the hiring for the nursing dept. Write this name down as you ask for the fax number. Type up the name along with fax number and name of facility in top area of your cover letter.

Send a fax cover sheet, cover letter and a one page resume to the facility.

Closest to farthest away, wait 7 days in between batches.

Reply by phone to all replies, go to each interview you get, be positive and relax.

I tried this method and contacted every possible facility that hires LPNs. First job lasted 6 weeks, the second job is going 7 mos and I recieved a small Christmas bonus and a one dollar raise in December.

Please note, in school I had nearly perfect attendance. At each job I have had, I never get defensive and I try very hard to remember who pays my paycheck, the pt and thier families.

Tell us when youstart working.

I will also be graduating from a LPN program from Kansas in May. I do want to go on to get my RN , but I am ready to move. I have already attended college 15 years ago and am looking for a place that my classes will transfer to a RN program along with a BSN! I would like to move to Texas. Does anyone have any suggestions about a hospital or jobs around the Houston area and the pay scale? I would prefer a smaller town like 40 to 50,000 people. Thanks for any information you can provide me!

..I hope that you found what you were looking for in a career.

Go back to school. Only long term care facilities and home health hire LPN's. Most hospitals only hire RN's, Mayo clinic will only hire 4 year RN's and just layed off all LPN's in acute care settings

I work as an LPN in a hospital, and just got hired at a clinic. So this is false. Also was asked if I wanted to work at a Mayo Clinic as an LPN.
