Loyola Chicago ABSN Fall 2021

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi all,

I wanted to start a thread for those who are applying to Loyola University of Chicago's ABSN program for the Fall 2021 cohort.

I still have a few pre-recs to complete, but I am planning to submit my application next month. I would be moving from out of state and Loyola is my top choice program.

I just got my acceptance letter & planning to submit my deposit today for the Maywood campus! Is there a facebook page set up for our cohort yet? I joined the ABSN facebook group that students sell scrubs & books in.

No there isn't.

Here's the Fall 2021 ABSN Cohort FB page :) Feel free to join and share with other student's who have been accepted.

My FB account recently got hacked ? But, hopefully I'll be able to see y'all in person this fall!

Question: anyone commuting from the city? I have the chance to live with family in West-ridge (Rogers Park), but that's a hellofa commute. Wondering if I'll be the only one committing to a long commute from the city.

another question: where are y'all looking for private loans? is anyone even attempting to snag a scholarship for a second bachelors?

Hi! I am looking into private loans and scholarships. I asked my advisor for a list of resources and she sent them over. I know it is HARD to grab these things for second bachelor's but I am hopeful that I can.

I'm also hybrid. The good thing about that is less driving LOL

Im going to be living in the city and commuting and I am hybrid as well! I have a phone call with my advisor tomorrow to discuss student loans. It is definitely harder to get a scholarship for a second bachelor's. If you all don't mind me asking, how much do you think you will be taking out for student loans? I am going to have to include cost of living and other expenses when coming up with a number.

True that! I may be commuting from Roger's Park, which is a bummer... but I may still move to somewhere closer, I guess I'll know for sure as the semester gets closer!

looking forward to meeting you in lab and clinicals ?

Is anyone waiting on FAFSA so they can use their remaining loans to pay for the program? I was trying to figure out how much more I could take out because my advisor said there's apparently a bucket on how much a student can take out but I couldn't find it anywhere.

Right after completing FASFA application, they give you an estimate of how much you may be awarded. But the official number I think is sent to the school first, and I think it's April that the school starts sending out financial award letters (which tell you how much fasfa will give you in loans). I think on the fasfa website they have the numbers on the limit you can borrow per/year and overall. So how much they will give you depends on how much you've taken out already for your first degree, and whether or not you are dependent or independent (I think).

This is the resource I found a couple months back that may help!

I don't know your financial situation, but I am considered an independent. It looks like I would max out at $57K unsubsidized loans total, but with a max of $12.5K/year (so really since the program probably only covers 1 or 2 FAFSA years, I wouldn't actually get $57K). Plus I've already borrowed some. I don't know how much say Loyola has in what we can borrow, so who knows if we're actually eligible for that much or not. I have very low expectations of getting federal loans, but still hopeful! ?

Oh I don't remember getting an estimate when I submitted FAFSA. What alternatives are people looking at if FAFSA doesn't cover everything? Are we allowed to take loans directly from the school? I know my roommate had to take loans out directly from the school to pay for her undergrad tuition because FAFSA didn't cover everything.

I remember my submission said something about what I may be able to take out too, and I think it coincided with the yearly max for an independent student. I just don't know if that will actually happen. Sounds like most people take out private loans... my friend in the program took pretty much the whole tuition out in Discover loans, so I don't think the school has loans, but I could be wrong? I had heard of other schools doing that which is super nice and convenient! I'm hoping to get by with savings and federal loans, otherwise I'll take out private. My advisor asked if I had a co-signer ready for private loans, so if that's what it comes down to I'd look into seeing who would for you as well!

I finally submitted my application. Now the waiting game begins! ?
