Low GPA?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

My GPA is low-----2.8. It sucks but unfortunately I can't undo the past.

I have an AA degree, completed all prerequisites and work in the OR.

All I have left is to take the NET+TEAS then, I can apply.

I plan to study hard and apply to a myriad of schools but, I was just wondering if there was anybody else in the same boat as myself?

Hi Future-nurse,

Can you name a few schools? I am interested to research and look them up.

Many thanks!!

I know Im a little late with this post but Oklahoma City University accepts EVERYONE who has completed the pre reqs. There is no catch to this or anything, apparently they are in a contract with the government (or something like that) to decrease the nursing shortage. If youre willing to go anywhere then its worth looking up. They have ADN, BSN, accelerated BSN and MSN programs that anyone can get into. They only limit enrollment in the doctoral programs. The programs are pricier than at CC's but if youre feeling discouraged this is a perfect route for you. Im thinking about it myself but the fact that its in Oklahoma is kind of whats turning me away. Just doesnt sem like a place I could see myself living:cool:

wow i would have definitely applied to Oklahoma city university, but it's way too far for me. does anyone know any other programs out there like that that are less competitive to get into? preferably near new york?

what are the deadlines for applications?

I'm similar to bluechick -- my pre-req GPA is low, relatively speaking, at 3.4. My advisor said there were a few alternates who got in last sem with a 3.4 but that makes me think I am risking too much.

My TEAS was an 88% comp. so I am going to take it again in the hopes that a higher TEAS will help me compensate for my lower GPA.

FWIW, I am applying for my ADN and they only select based on GPA: 45%, TEAS score: 50%, and county you live in: 5%

But having a GPA of 3.4 (or 2.8 or 3.2 or whatever!) be considered low SUCKS!!!!

GL! I'm right there with you!

Apply to multiple schools. (Always ask to be placed on their alternate list. Emphasize that you are available to start on short notice.) Interview with the nursing admissions coordinator so thye get to know you. Most importantly-Don't give up!

If anyone who had a low GPA and got accepted into a nursing school (BSN) is willing to disclose what nursing school and where, please please let us know! (feel free to message me privately if you don't want to mention it here).

I have a low GPA too. I have two C's on my record (Statistics and General Chemistry), which are prerequisites for basically ALL nursing schools country-wide. My total GPA is about a 3.4 (including non-prereq classes), and my prerequisite GPA (depending on which school...) is around a 3.4-3.6. My TEAS is an 87.5% and my NET is in the 98th percentile. I'm really looking for schools who will accept me--no matter where they are located!! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PS-I applied to (and was rejected from) Cal State East Bay for Fall '09 already! Really feeling the stress.

Hi, I'm new to this website, but I saw this post and I'm in pretty much the exact same situation as you are! I'm only a freshman(with enough credit hours to be a sophomore) and I have a 3.38 GPA right now (not including classes I took in high school) and am super stressed about getting into nursing school next year because of my GPA!! I go to a private university in texas thats pretty tough and my GPA definitely doesn't reflect the work I've put into my classes :\

Don't worry! My best advice is to apply to private schools or community colleges (if you don't mind getting an ADN before your BSN) since they don't seem to be as picky about GPA as the state schools are. Also, it seems like there's a better chance to get in if you apply for the spring entry instead of fall because there's less competition. I applied to a local private school for fall '09 and was placed on the waitlist. I received a letter saying I was #11 and actually ended up being #1 on that waitlist for that semester when no one else decided to drop out! That was discouraging, but I reapplied for spring 2010 and was accepted without being placed on a waitlist! :) Now I'm in my senior year of nursing school and couldn't be more ecstatic about it.

Don't give up. Make sure you do all the things that give you extra points (like apply for a job in a hospital, volunteer, etc!) and do well on your entrance exam. There is always hope!

try university of nevada las vegas! they accept people summer, spring, and fall. they require a 3.0 GPA
