Low GPA

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

I graduated with a BA in 2005 with a very low GPA of a 2.3. I went back to school to take prereqs for a medical technology program. I did terrible in the classes the reason why is a very long story. I am going to a community college in the spring to take nursing school prereqs. I am now in a better state of mind so I think I will do better. Do you think that I can still get into nursing school if I do really well with my prereq courses for nursing school even though I did so poorly before?

it really depends on what kind of program youre looking for. the majority of the schools i applied to (all were direct entry grad programs) required a 3.0 GPA and over 1000 cumulative GRE. some, however, only required GPA for the last 60 hours you've taken, so that might help you out a bit. it might also be a good idea to take the 6 week CNA classes and start working that way to get some experience. the educational culture i'm exposed to really values that. you might also want to look into ADN programs and move up to an ADN to MSN. again, it really just depends on what you want to do right now.

Are you talking about a BSN degree or a MSN?

Some nursing schools have a higher gpa cutoff but the ones that are flexible about gpa usually have a min cutoff of 2.5-2.75, i.e. C average. Your present gpa is a little below the cutoff so to bring it up you should spend a few semesters taking prereqs and doing well in them. Nursing programs place a heavier weight on science prereqs. So if you can get As or Bs in the science courses you take going forward this should help you to get admitted somewhere.

You might find that you have better luck with private schools than public because more people are looking for cheaper tuition rates at the state schools.

Thanks for the information. I am interested in the accelerated BSN program at NYU. I need to find out if its possible for me to get in there with my record and how rigorous it is.

Post this in the NY programs forum...you did say BSN.....so you will get more responsive since NYers look there. Also punch "NYU" in the search engine. There are some threads on them and you will get responses.

If there is no minimum GPA I would apply. You never know what may happen if you apply. If you do not apply then you not get in under any circumstances.

You might also want to think about looking in to ADN programs. You can always to an MSN at a soignee school later...

Good luck!

at dyouville college in buffalo all you need is a 2.5 overall gpa for their programs. if you bring yours up to 2.5 you will be admitted

I dont have a fantastic GPA due to personal reasons at the time of studying, but that hasn't stopped me applying as i have a lot of volunteer and work experience which i'm hoping will help my application.

I think it is useful to contact the university prior to applying to ask them their opinion with regards to your GPA and application.

I would say this, GPA is not everything. I kinda read fast through this one. If I understand right, you have a BA in something else, correct? And wanting to go to nursing school at a community college, correct? 2.3 GPA is not educational suicide. How many you prereqs do have to take? If you do well, you should be able to bring it up a bit, but it will be rigorous.

I don't think that a community college will even look at your BA stuff unless you are using some of those classes for transfer, which some may not at all. A lot of the entrance to nursing school is the pre-entrance test score and how well you did in prereq classes. Things like prior experience can go a long way as well.

As for the accelerated program, I think it would be in your best interest to go through the cc program instead of that. It is hard to cram the knowledge of a nurse in a year. It is very rigorous, will not be able to work at all. Nursing school will limit your working, let alone accelerated. Min of 3.0, they usual take about a 3.5 GPA. It is really rough, better to go slow and get the info and skills and increase your pay as you go. Thats what I am doing.

Went to a four year college 9 years ago..got pregnant, got in with the bad crowd and failed out. My first semester had a 3.9, second had 1.3 So, my chances were shot pretty fast. I took the prereqs three years ago to start on my ADN, and was admitted with a 2.57 (2.5) is lowest that can get you in here. So i barely made it, but i did. I managed to continure to keep my grades high graduated with a 3.3 GPA, i gaduated with a good GPA and am waing not for a good job.we have to. it is pobble. Work haerd for wha you want you can take preqeques to bring your GPA up. i worked all my prerequisites so brink my GPA to a 2. 57, whick got mt in. Yes it can be done.

You could also consider retaking some of the classes you didn't do so great in. It seems that would raise your GPA faster than simply taking more courses.
