I have been working in an ICU unit precepting for five months, I just was placed on my RN probation period and was working for one month everyone on the unit starting conversing about how I recieved day shift and other issues related to my position. Next thing I know I am called in the office because on of my coworkers wrote me up. I have tried to be humble through this whole exp. and not complain and then today I recieve a termination letter stating I had made a med error and Icu is not the right fit for me. When up to this six month point all I recieved was good reviews. I don't understand this. I my first year of nursing at that. I am heartbroken has this happened to anyone before?

I haven't passed my NCLEX yet so I can't give you any practical advice or speak from experience, but I want to express my condolences and assure you that you're not alone in this.

At some point in time it was decided that you did not fit in, and the decision was made to "find" a reason to terminate you. Another person might have done the exact same thing, but because they were accepted by the work group, nothing was ever said. You may have been a "poor fit", or the unit may have been a "poor fit", that is, the problem could have been them. It doesn't matter. You have to go. Hopefully you will find a place where you fit in and any true faults, slights, mistakes, need for improvement, are brought to your attention in an attempt to help you grow into a better nurse. When something is brought up days before termination, you can bet that it really wasn't a problem. If it had been, someone would have been helping you before this. So be glad that you are given this opportunity to find a better place to work. Good luck.
The unit was very close nit and in the short time I was ther I would see people come and go. I even saw negativity happening but tried to stay out of it. Some of the nurses were down right mean. Thanks for all the feedback. I know this is God's way of heping me to a better place.

:flwrhrts:Sorry to hear you were let go. Maybe your next job will be a better fit. I know you are sad now. Would it be possible to get hired for another floor? :icon_hug: Hang in there.

so sorry to hear that, its hard on you but be positive, look at it as an opportunity for even a better job, as they say "the end of one is the begginning of another". best wishes.
I have faith and to tell the truth I learned a ton but I think first year taking care of five criticaly ill patients is setting yourself up for an unsafe situation.

What an unsupportive environment! In my facility, if errors are made, they are viewed as an oppurtunity to search for resolutions to problems ... not reasons to fire someone. In a punitive environment, you are not free to report errors or mistakes without fear of reprecussions. This harbors the potential for dishonesty and is just not a good work environment in my opinion.
Remember, we all make mistakes at some time or another. We are human too, and to err is human. Thinking of you and wishing you luck in finding a new position! Always remember, when one door closes, another opens ... God has bigger better plans for you!

I am sorry you are going through such a hard time. I know you will be stronger for having gone through this but it doesn't make it any easier. I am curious....did you receive positive evaluations before? Did you receive warning that you were on probation and that your job might be on the line? You might want to check with human resources regarding employee rights. You may not be able to stay in ICU but you could go to another unit.
Just a thought...
