Los Angeles County School of Nursing

Any one here graduates of the program? Or are in the program?

Prospective students, also beware that County's program is not NLNAC accredited. What does this mean? That many hospitals, including the VA and Kaiser, will not hire you. Something to consider!

mmmm that interesting. i wonder if county is the only school who isnt NLNAC accredited.

anyways, after reading so many comments on here about countys not so great nursing program, i dont know if i should apply. anybody else here applying during july-august?

After doing a little research of my own- turns out there are many schools that aren't NLNAC accredited, including Glendale and Pasadena. However, County is NLNAC approved- otherwise the state of CA wouldn't allow you to take the NCLEX. NLNAC accreditation is sought after by hospital systems like Kaiser or the VA because there facilities are in most states across the US. They are attempting to maintain a unified level of education in all their hospitals. I want to work in a County facility when I graduate- so this isn't really a deal breaker for me.

Has anyone heard anything about the attrition/grad rate, passing scores for classes, clinical expectations and overall rating for the following schools: ELAC, PCC, Cypress?

Unsunghero:

I was accepted to PCC's program and attended their orientation. I asked for their graduation rate but they could not provide a definite %. They just said that they lose about 10-15 people, on average, from each cohort class. They require a 75% to pass each class. I'm not sure what you mean by clinical expectations but they do have a lot of resources available for students. They have tutors, a skills lab to practice, and they also have a retention counselor who works as a student advocate and can help you stay on track if you are having issues. They have a high NCLEX pass rate (in the 90+ %) and they use ATI throughout the program to help you prepare. PCC has a great reputation for their nursing program and my stepmother, who works at LAC+USC, encouraged me to go there if I didn't get into County's program. She confirmed that the program is highly regarded.

To the rest of my classmates starting in the Fall:

I started to buy my textbooks and found them on amazon and textbooks(dot)com at much more affordable rates than what the bookstore is selling them at. So shop around!

@ Willowita- I wanted to check out options before deciding on a particular school. In regards to clinical expectations, I was wondering how many pts they assign students 1st sem, the time of clinicals and if there are competencies throughout the semester. I am glad to hear there is a student advocate/tutor available because based on my prev experience as an adult learner a bit rusty, having educ resources like a tutor or advocate is reassuring that there is a sense of support. Its a hard decision picking a good school because its a commitment you have to make for the next 2years. I was wondering about ELAC since I submitted an app there. Regardless , gtg into any nursing school is the important thing to focus on right now.

unsunghero:

They didn't mention how many patients you get in the first semester or there after. But I got the impression that they ease you into it and coddle you along the way so you don't get overwhelmed early on. I don't remember exact times for clinicals but they are during the day T,W,Th with M and F being seminar and theory classes.

Sorry, I don't know anything about ELAC. But good luck!

Not much discussion on this thread lately. Guess we've all been busy!

Just wanted to check in with my fellow classmates entering in Fall 2012. How are you guys doing with the laundry list of stuff we need to do before school starts? Has anyone finished the health clearance? Gotten textbooks? BLS?

Hello all!

Got the health clearance done. Already had my BLS through work. I'm trying to get all the textbooks. I've managed to find some pretty good deals online. I'm just concerned because I manage to find the correct edition but it's not the same publishing year that appears on our list. I hope this does not make a difference. Any insight anyone?

Darlene,

Which book doesn't have the same publishing year? Was it a pharmacology book? That's the only book I didn't buy because I found two books that were the same except one was from 2011 and the other from 2012 (I think), same edition and everything else. They mentioned in orientation that they were unsure about that book and would update us later. Since pharm starts later in the semester, I was going to wait until we got an answer about it.

I also got my BLS done, ordered the uniform, got my NSO insurance. I just got my titer results yesterday so I have to make an appt for the health clearance.

I would wait on the pharm book bc there are some errors that were found in it.

Congrats to all that have been accepted thus far! Yay!I still haven't received a letter from county. I was wondering if anyone has received rejection letters, or has everyone who received a letter been accepted up until now? Does anyone know when they will finally send out the rest the letters?! I'm dying here....Thanks!!!
