Looking for the not so typical LPN job

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

Please post if you are an LPN doing a job that isn't the typical clinic, hospital, LTC, PDN type job.

I'm thinking of changing my area of nursing. I have no interest in the typical jobs. I'm getting burned out with PDN. I prefer working alone or with a few people. I don't want the risk and pressure of LTC. I don't want to work in a clinic doing vital signs all day. And I'm sick of the nutty families in PDN...dealing with them in short bursts instead of constantly is fine and I'm tired of them having control over my hours. I prefer a job where I can wear scrubs. I hate dressing up for work.

So far I have applied to 2 plasma centers as I'd enjoy doing assessments all day. And I have applied to an assisted living facility for management experience.

So what do you do that is different from the typical LPN job? What is your day like? If you are comfortable discussing it, what is the pay like? Any other job suggestions? I'm in NC if that makes a difference. Thanks!

I wish LPN scope of practice were consistent from state to state. It'd make communication much easier.

I wish we weren't so limited. We are very capable of so much more.

That would make things easier in general.

I got offered job previously ( I didn't take it) but it was called a case manager working for insurance companies going to home visits to strictly do education

Specializes in Psych, LTC/SNF, Rehab, Corrections.

why not an admin position? One of my coworkers goea around interviewing ltcs and such for new residents for placement. I see positions like that on craigslist st times. You could also try Case Management. Something health insurance relaed. I work with another nurse who does that. They don't have much exp. Theyre relaticely new but older than me.

Specializes in Peds(PICU, NICU float), PDN, ICU.

Case management is outside my scope of practice. We can't do initial assessments, only the RN can. We aren't allowed to oversee anyone but CNAs in this state.

In my state this would be outside our scope of practice as well. :-(

I have been an LPN for about 6 years. I have held two very different LPN jobs. Through out school, I was realizing this was not for me. However I was so close to finishing I was not going to quit. Fresh out of school I got a job briefly at a private doctors office. It was very part time with no benefits. Eight months later I landed a job working as an LPN for a DME company. Mon-Fri 8-5 no weekends no holidays, great pay ($20) and benefits. I did nocturnal o2 tests, o2 walk testing, and setting patients up for their CPAP/BiPAP machines. I followed up with patients daily to see how compliant they were and worked with insurance companies and doctors offices to have new makes, new tubing, etc approved. After I few years I grew a bit board, I was never intending to leave, however I heard of a new position at the local hospital.

The local hospital in our area was hiring LPN's to do medication reconciliation for all patients. I applied and got it! I have been doing this for the past year. My day now involves me rotating all over the hospital and collecting patients correct medication data, whether it be from the patient, his PCP, pharmacy, or a family member. Sometimes this takes a matter of minutes, sometimes the research can take hours. I enjoy it. Everyday I get to meet new people and see all different areas of the hospital. I still get good pay, and benefits. I typically work Mon-Fri 7-3. I know the areas are no means close to nursing. For the most part I don't feel like a nurse, sometimes I feel silly saying I am a nurse! Eventually I would like to go into a more admin role. Go back to school and get a degree in health admin. Nursing really isn't in my heart. Now more than ever, seeing how stressed the RN's are, going back to school to complete my RN is not something I am interested in. However I hope I gave you some insight to two very different not your run of the mill LPN jobs. =)

I did the DME side. I liked the job. But the management was awful. I was written up during training for doing what I was trained to do. The person training me honestly thought they were training me correctly. We both were written up. I was told I should have known policies by then and should be reading the policy book at home without pay. It went downhill from there. I would do the job again if I could find a decent company. But that doesn't exist around here.

The medication job sounds interesting. Not something I could do long term without being bored. But certainly something I'll keep an eye out for.

How MDS coordinator for nursing home? it is usually 8-4 job and you just do assessment all day long and care plans. another option is restorative nurse. usually this are very well paid jobs

What exactly are those jobs? I've heard of both, but don't know anything more about them than the title.

I work in a medical spa here in NC. I work their weight loss clinic 1 day a week, and 2 saturdays a month. I check vital signs, educate regarding the program, and give injections of Vitamin B-12.

The rest of the week I perform medical esthetics. I perform chemical peels, laser hair removal, laser skin tightening with Exilis, Fraxel laser skin rejuvenation, microdermabrasion, and IPL treatments. We have MD oversight, and an NP and PA on site at all times.

I LOVE this work. People who get botox and esthetic services sometimes get a bad rap, however, these are people wanting to look and feel their best. I see happy, healthy people, and I feel like I can make a difference in their skin care and life.

My salary is the same as it was in LTC, and I accept tips when offered, and I am paid for services too. My compensation pkg is excellent.
