looking for online MSN/FNP program

I am looking for an online MSN/FNP online program, anyone have any ideas?

SUNY Stony Brook is another good one.

Hello everyone, thanks for starting this thread. I'm planning to start my online MSN program early next and I have a question on access to reference materials. If I enroll in a local university, I would have access to their library but as an online student, how do I get hold of all the books , publications/journals, thesis and dissertations that I need? To quote a former patient of mine who is a librarian, "If its not published, its not online." Aren't there medical online libraries available? Are they open to the public or do you have to pay for a subscription with them? Hope you can share some information!

Hi there Dixiecup. I am researching MSN FNP online programs and came across your post SLU being "best thing since sliced bread". I briefly looked at the site but could not determine the actual cost per credit hour. Do they offer in state tuition for distance students? How often, if at all, do you have to go to the campus? I live in VA and work FT so this info is important to know!

At this time, I am primarily considering University of South Alabama and University of Alabama Birmingham (still waiting to hear back UAB with some answers to my questions).

Thanks for your time.

Florida State also has an all online FNP program.

RN909, I did my BSN in a partially online program. We met once a month and used email and Blackboard in between meetings.

As I believe it is with most schools, you have online access to the libraries so you can retrieve some info there. You should also have access with your ID and password to the online journal subcscriptions. Books were harder to access than journals. If you have a local school or hospital with a health sciences library/section, you could always visit there for hard copies of books and journals.

Some papers done by students at the school I attended were available as well. However, another option that I used...If you find a dissertation that you are interested in but can't find the full and/or hard copy, try to locate the nurse who wrote it. If he/she is affiliated with a school of nursing, they may be easy to find. I was able to do this once and she emailed with me and sent me a copy of the whole thing.

What school have you chosen?

Good luck!

I found your explanation on distant learning quite helpful. I have been wondering how to go about doing my RN on line. i wondered about the clinicals and how that would work. I am still researching and hopefully will decide on where to begin soon.

At SLU it's a traditional semester and there are deadlines for assignments and papers just like if you were in the classroom. You get a syllabus with all the assigned readings for the semester.

There are lectures every week that you log on and listen to through Real Player. (the great thing about that is you can rewind, you can't do that in a real lecture!)

You communicate with the instructor and other students through a BB forum. You are usually required to post certain assignments on the BB throughout the semester along with other papers, tests and assignments you would do on your own.

You can also communicate with other students or the instructor via private email also.

I love it!

Thanks for the head's up! I'm looking into one of their post-master's certificates. Do you happen to know if tuition the same for in-state and out-of-state students?

Thank for the info, I need to know how long will it take complete my pre requisite I have to do maths, Biology, A&P and not sure what else I will be meeting with an adviser in the coming week. I just need to know what to expect.

:lol2:I just wanted to tell you that I appreciate you putting this info up bout Indiana State University. I am going to start in Spring 2008. I am currently enrolled at Saint Louis University, but I am not happy with the way I have been treated there. Thanks for writing!

Indiana State University offers a fully online program where you do your clinicals in your area. I just completed my first semester there and am VERY happy with it so far. Challenging without being impossible and the instructors are amazing. To boot, being an online student I pay instate tuition!

I'm right at the point where I'd send off transcripts etc. to SLU and a couple others I'm looking at - can you tell me about your issues with SLU? Also how are you liking Indiana state? I'm looking for a FNP and psych NP both. There is a program here @ UCSF that is combined adult NP and psych NP, but I really need to get away from live classroom - I HATE it. I have an MBA I did from an online school and loved it, so I figure online is the way to go for me (plus less childcare issues that way too!)

I would do MSN FP and add a psych post-grad certificate since there don't seem to be any online combo's for this.

Thanks!!

These are some of the online FNP schools I have found thus far, plus the cost (in thousands) for the whole program, and the # of visits throughout the course of the program. Anyone in or graduated from these programs? I was in a fast track MSN program but left it after I got my RN due to dissatisfaction with the quality of instruction. Had a lot of well known professors who have done alot, but could not teach in person.
