Hello,
I need advice on what to do about my current job situation and search for a new one. I am a new grad... graduated in May 2010 with my BSN. Applied all over the place, finally took the first job I could get in August, which was at a LTC facilty. I have been at my current job for 4 months now and am ready to look for something different.
My question is, when applying for jobs, do I allow my current employer to be contacted? I know on some applications there is a box to check yes or no if you would allow it, and if not you need to explain why. Also, should I ask fellow co-workers or my immediate supervisor if they will give me a reference? I am nervous about this whole situation because I haven't been at my current job for very long. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks:)

I worked in LTC for 3 months before getting the job that I have now, I did let my employer know that the facility was just not a good fit for me and that I was going to be applying at other facilities. I had support from my DoN at the LTC which made the transition very stress free for me. Good luck in your job hunt!

I've been working at subacute for 6 months, and I can definitely sympathize with the need for something different. I'd say if your supervisor or coworkers are the type you can trust with information about you leaving than go for it. I know at my job one of my supervisor's really would like to see me get to a hospital setting, and has really been in my corner with that dream. By all means use the references available to you, if they're good :).

Agree with the advice already given, and wanted to add that you sometimes can specify that you prefer your current employer only be contacted if an employment offer is being extended to you.
Good luck!

Wow. I am in a very similar position! I am a new grad who has been working at an LTACH for about 5 mos. It is definetly not a good fit for me and I want out yesterday! I am also applying for other jobs and have tended to check the do not contact box for current employer. I figured if I had a job offer I would have no problem with them contacting my current hospital but if I let them know they may start digging about why and I don't want to make waves with my coworkers since the lack of support is one of the reasons why I want to leave.
I'd be curious to see what people think about letting your supervisor know you are looking elsewhere. I wish you luck!

Mine probably already knows. My ex DON knows and she is PRN on the floor. I used her as a reference. I hate my current job and do a good job work when called but I have no plans on staying there. I check contact current employer but worry what will they say if called.
