I'm in Toledo, Ohio and in a LPN program at Owens Community College. If you are willing to make the drive to Toledo, check out Owens. Before applying at Owens, I attended an informationals at other places. I found the tuition to be outrageous and the programs not to transfer credits toward my RN (I'll start in Jan, '09). I couldn't believe how business-oriented some of the small LPN schools were!
Owens is awesome. The instructors are great (it is very intensive-they expect a lot) and I am so thankful to be going here. Tuition is relatively low (even out-of-state would be MUCH cheaper than some of the schools I checked out) and your classes will apply to your RN degree. Any science courses, humanities, etc. from an accredited college already taken will transfer (unlike the testing out requirement even though already taken at other schools).
I have friends who live in Mich. It seems the economy is poor in the state, and I hear there's a waiting list at many schools, with all the laid-off workers, so it might be worth your while to check out OH schools, even if it isn't Owens that's for you. Good luck!

I just came from Owens web site I was looking at the requirements, how do you get a pharmacology certification?
I don't know about a pharmacology certification, but pharmacology is a course requirement in both the LPN and RN programs. There might be a way to test out of the course, or maybe on the site the talk is about a pharmacy technician program or something.

Hello, I just was accepted into a new lpn program in Southfield. The school is called Everest Institute and they are a vocational school. No prereqs required but if you have them it helps. I had finished all my pre-reqs for the RN program at Baker in Clinton Twp and was turned down basically because I didn't have a 4.0 gpa and a 90 or better on my Net. I figured its a losing battle to wait for Baker plus I need to get working full time as soon as posible. I know someone who graduated in the very first lpn class in Nov. 08 at Everest and she said it was tough but a great program. I did alot of research on the school and the lpn program. The director has a doctorate in nursing and they have other well quallified instructors for this program. The two biggest downfalls for me is they are VERY expensive....on the flip side they have financial aid available and there are scholarships and michigan works to help. The second downfall is classes are monday through friday from 8:00 to 5:00 p.m....... on the flip side its only for 11 months. Most people in our shoes can choke it down because we are driven to get there no matter what it takes. As for the RN part of it, I may finish it online with Excelsior or find a bridge program. Good luck.

I went to Baker (Clinton Township) as well. I have two A's in A&P and Math and then Two B's in Psychology and English. I really feel like I was mislead. I spoke with my adviser today and she told me in order for me to get into the R.N. program I will need A's in all of my other Pre-Req's, and then it depends on some other factors too. I feel soooooooo let down & mislead by Baker College :thnkg:. I am also just thinking of going to Everest to just get my L.P.N.
Does anyone know if our financial Aid will cover the tuition for the L.P.N. program at Everest? I am not eligible for grants just LOANS.
Hello, I too felt mislead by Baker, I had a 3.85 GPA overall and no other pointes taken off for transfer credits and things like that. As a matter of fact I was #86 out of 285 people that applied. Talk about disapointed, it is so competitive everywhere. As far as the Everest lpn program I was able to get finanicial aid loans. They have a wide spectrum of financial aide available. I hear now there is a bridge program at Baker Auburn Hills for lpn to rn. But the catch is you have to be an Auburn Hills student to get first priority. I don't get Baker, either way I paid for tuition no matter what location it is from. I have the same pre-reqs (from Clinton Twp) that are required for the bridge program so why can't I get first priority? Makes no sense to me.
Wow see I am glad that I am thinking about this now. It really just doesn't make sense to me to give Baker College my hard earned money when I feel like they deceived me. You did a great job with your 3.85!! They should be turning people away instead of letting more ppl in the program and giving them false hope. Obviously they cannot supply the students with a full education. Why take the money to begin with and make everyone stress out about getting all A's? The women are so mean at horrible to each other, and it's the older students that act like this. The ones that look honest like they would be your Aunt or Mother. I had a horrible experience at Baker College. One that was too devastating to publicly announce. I could have sued the school but didn't. You would think they would have refunded me my tuition. I didn't bother to ask for it but I probably should have an attorney write up some papers for me. I was really turned off by my experience. Luckily I have 2 anesthesiologists and 2 R.N.'s in my close family that told me I would not be treated like this once I have a job. But really if the women are all crazy like I have been reading and have witnessed first hand then a career in the nursing field would not make me happy. The only good thing I can say about Baker is that I'm glad that after a year of classes my advisor told me the truth about getting into the Nursing Program and that I basically need to have all A's on EVERYTHING!!! I have also taken all my classes there as well.
The university of Phoenix has a bridge program as well and I think that you can do it online. I won't give Baker another dime. I am not bitter but I just feel I should have been told you need all A's to start with. Really that is the case. I have heard ppl with 4.0 haven't even got in the program. That is sad. Our families and husbands are so proud of us and then after going through the classes and studying so hard you get the biggest let down. That is not right.
Thank you very much for the loan info at Everest. I am going to meet them in a couple weeks and I am dropping my online summer classes at Baker that start soon.

Hi HeatherLee!
I am in the exact same boat as you! I am also all signed up for baker but I am very afraid that I wont get into the lpn program! I am also looking into everest.
Thanks,
Katie
Katie what program are you in at Baker? The R. N. right? Which Baker do you attend? Why don't you think you would make it into the Everest program?
