Looking 4 other Cali students trying to get into ADN or BSN online programs?

Published

Hi, I'm trying to network with other new grads, or almost graduating students of an LVN program who's also looking into an ADN, RN or BSN online course. Other students from other states are also welcome but I'd like to hear from other Californians because it seems BON in Ca. are not accepting Excelsior graduates. I've been researching but so far I've come across Deaconess, RUE, The college network and Indiana State Univ. Don't know yet if they're the same status as Excelsior here in CA. as in banned by BON. All info are welcome. Thanks in advance

I don't think Cali accepts any of those programs. BUT, you really need to check with BORN first hand to find out for sure.

To my knowledge, the only online programs accepted in Cali are a few local universities, UoP, etc. allowing RN's, who already have their ADN, to get their BSN and, even MSN. Not the option you're talking about.

But, again, you really need to check with the BORN.

Hi-I am an LVN in California trying to pursue my RN. I spoke with someone at The College Network. They currently don't do anything with nurses in Ca. due to the Ca BRN. I have looked into Deaconess, but I haven't found anything concrete. I understand that they have a clinical component, one which you have to find on your own. That is okay, if you work for a hospital or have access to a clinic. The obstacle would be finding out how to have the hours signed off. I did check with the Ca BRN. The Board says that "Excelsior College graduates, like other out of state graduated must have supervised clinical practice in order to be eligible for examination and licensure as a Ca. Registered Nurse". Again, you can take Excelsior classes, if you can find a clinical site, and someone to sign the hours off. You would also have to find out what would be required in the clinical hours. So, since The College Network is out, I would imagine that Rue and Indiana State are out as well. I read somewhere else that Excelsior College and the Ca BRN are working together on an externship program. I don't know if this is true, though. Here is my question: If you know someone who lives out of CA, can you apply or use an address out of state, take the Board for that State and then apply for reciprocity with CA?:confused Let me know if you find anything out.:

No. Excelsior actually tried to convince the California BORN to allow that, but the board refused.

The Board says that "Excelsior College graduates, like other out of state graduated must have supervised clinical practice in order to be eligible for examination and licensure as a Ca. Registered Nurse". Again, you can take Excelsior classes, if you can find a clinical site, and someone to sign the hours off. This sounds like California will still take Excelsior with clinical hours. That is not the case. You can't go to the board and say: "Here's some clinical hours give me my RN license." It doesn't work like that.

There were many areas where Excelsior didn't meet California requirements, not just the number of clinical hours but how the clinicals were to be conducted and supervised. Currently, there is no way to meet the state's requirements by going through Excelsior.

Anyone who enrolls in Excelsior after the December, 2003 deadline, and attempts to gain licensure in California, is wasting their time. People need to understand this before they waste any time and money.

Just so you know, RUE and College Network (as well as Chancellor's, DSL {or DLS?} and many others) are not schools; they are merely companies that publish study materials for schools such as Excelsior. Buying your study materials from them rather than going straight through EC is waaaay more expensive, so anyone thinking of using a publishing company--- think twice and do some research before you sign a single thing.

If CA BRN is not accepting Excelsior grads due to clinical components that does not meet CA requirements, is it safe to say that they have nothing against Deaconess and Indiana State since they have a clinical component with their RN programs? What is the CA requirement as far as clinical hours are concern? Also does anybody know exactly what a preceptorship is? Thanks.

I have never heard of Deaconess or Indiana State being accepted by the CA BORN. But, I could be wrong and you really need to contact the board on that one, just to be sure.

California has numerous requirements for their clinicals, which is why these other programs may not be accepted either. If I recall correctly, there's at least 360 clinical hours required, and all of that has to be supervised by state certified instructors. Plus, the clinicals have to be conducted concurrently with theory instruction. And, there are several specialties that have to be covered in clinicals, which usually involves rotations at several hospitals since one hospital never has all the clinical specialties.

This is just a few of the requirements. The list goes on and on.

This is also why I doubt the BORN accepts those other programs but, it's always best to check with the board to find out for sure.

As long as Deaconess and Indiana State are NLN approved, with clinical components concurrent with theory instruction, CA will accept them. Contrary to the opinions of some people here, CA BRN does not need to individually approve every nursing program in the nation.

Excelsior is the ONLY NLN approved RN program that is NOT accepted by BRN.

It is true that Ca does not individually approve every nursing program in the country. But, every program has to meet California's requirements if you're going to be licensed here. At least that's what the board says on their website.

When EC was approved by the state, you could find it on the CA BORN website as an approved program. I can't find anything on the website that mentions the state accepting these other programs, which is why I raised doubts about it.

UoP and other online programs are listed, but not these. However, if I missed something and you have a link, that would be helpful.

Nevertheless, checking with the board would probably be the best thing for anyone trying to get a license in CA.

UOP is listed because they have a physical presence in California. Also, UOP does not offer an RN program, they only offer RN-BSN/MSN. The only nursing programs listed on BRN's webpage are those that are physically located within California.

Excelsior was never on that list; rather, a letter confirming Excelsior's acceptability was posted on the website. One might think that this was, presumably, because of the unique nature and high profile of Excelsior's program. Excelsior was, and is, the ONLY NLN approved entry-level RN program in the nation that does not have an integrated clinical component.

You are, of course, correct in stating that BRN is the final arbiter on acceptance of ANY entry-level RN program.
