Ok I know it's very early starting this but I am so excited I couldn't help it! Application period doesn't even start until January! My journey has been a long one and I am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel so I am sharing a little of that experience here and I would love to hear from others as well.
I just received my clearance letter from the BON so I am clear to apply in January for North Harris and Montgomery ADN programs, unfortunately I missed Kingwood. At this point I have an 11.1 and I'm about to retake the HESI so we shall see what is in store for me. I'm done with all my pre-reqs for my BSN and I'm so ready to start the next phase of my education and get on with more taking care of people! It's been 25 years since I decided I wanted to be a nurse. Twenty years of raising my kids, taking care of soldiers' families and single soldiers and eight years of riding in an ambulance later, I'm ready to follow my dream! Watch me go!
Good luck to all of you! I also wish we could find out sooner, lol! It is what it is though and thats pretty nerve wracking! I'm waiting til February just because I'm chicken and dont want to end up with another 74 in the math like I did last time. That was annoying, especially since my composite score was great! So I'm taking more time to study up since I need that base anyway. I'm glad I don't have an eight week course to worry about before hand though, best wishes on that one! Redhen, it isn't unheard of, especially at N.H., because they accept the most students, so keep your fingers crossed and I'll say a little prayer for ya!
Hi Everyone! I too will be applying for the Fall 2014 Basic RN program at Lonestar. I still need to take the Hesi, and I am just wondering how you all are studying for this. I have the book the school recommends, but was wondering how it mirrors the actual test. Is the A&P more extensive than what is shown in the book? What about the vocabulary? What kind of words can I expect? Are their medical words? Is the math pretty much like the book? Is the reading about the same as the book or less difficult? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I kid you not the vocabulary in my book was the exact words on my HESI Test! The math was the hardest for me. I also bought HESI Secrets which helped alot. I haven't took math in over ten years. I failed the math section on the HESI my first try, but I studied the math section like crazy and passed the HESI with flying colors my second try. The A&P section is really not that bad. I thought it was just basic stuff. Also when I took the test I brought ear plugs (I know it seems weird, but I wasn't distracted at all. The first time I took it a bunch of High school kids were taking placement tests and were talking/whispering which was really annoying).

THIS! Exactly what Red said! I also failed the math section (by 1 point! Still irks me, lol!) which is why I have to retake it. I didn't buy the book until after I took it the first time, at an advisor's suggestion. I recognized so many of the same questions from all sections in that book. So get it, take all the practice tests, repeatedly if necessary, and go take the real thing! You'll do great!
Thanks Redhen & SparklesMedic! I do appreciate your prompt feedback and wonderful advice. Sorry, to hear about your earlier unfortunate experiences, but I must say that I do admire your courage to keep pursuing your dreams, no matter what. Math is also my weakness, and it has been years since I have taken a math class, so I will have to do some brushing up on my basic math skills as well. Hopefully, there isn't too many pre-algebraic problems on the test. Maybe, I can deal with that. But, I am going to do the best that I can to prepare, and I only have one shot at it for Fall 2014. So, my goal is to try and make it a good one. I'm thinking about taking the Hesi in late Feb. SparklesMedic, are you taking it in Feb. also? Best wishes too you all--Let's keep our fingers crossed and our prays said.

Yes, I am shooting for the first week in Feb. Depends on my husbands training schedule and days off. No sitters, lol! Until last year it had been 20 years since I had taken a math course and I was terrified of taking the HESI the first time! I took it way before I had to, without studying just to see what it was like. Seriously though, the book you said you have, take those practice tests and you will do fine! The same type questions are on the HESI and it does a great job of reviewing how to complete the problems. I wouldn't have been so scared had I known that before taking it. We can do it!

I applied to all 4 campuses today. I hope I get in somewhere! Does anyone know of any student that got in with a 10.5?
