Ok I know it's very early starting this but I am so excited I couldn't help it! Application period doesn't even start until January! My journey has been a long one and I am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel so I am sharing a little of that experience here and I would love to hear from others as well.
I just received my clearance letter from the BON so I am clear to apply in January for North Harris and Montgomery ADN programs, unfortunately I missed Kingwood. At this point I have an 11.1 and I'm about to retake the HESI so we shall see what is in store for me. I'm done with all my pre-reqs for my BSN and I'm so ready to start the next phase of my education and get on with more taking care of people! It's been 25 years since I decided I wanted to be a nurse. Twenty years of raising my kids, taking care of soldiers' families and single soldiers and eight years of riding in an ambulance later, I'm ready to follow my dream! Watch me go!
Program length question!
So when/if I start the program in August, I'll need 37 hours to complete the program. Why does it take four semesters (two years) for just 37 hours? Is there a way to finish faster? I know the whole nursing process is something I want to take my time with generally speaking but 2 years for 37 hours just seems ..... slow.
It would be so nice if we could get through it more quickly! The ADN program doesn't offer summer classes. The classes per semester average 9 hrs and they register the students for those classes and for clinicals, you wont be registering yourself although you will be asked for your preference. There isn't a way to get through it any faster. From what I understand the homework load is heavy enough as it is with this set up that I'm sure I wouldn't want more! Nursing classes are different from core courses. They give you a huge amount of information to be studied and sorted through then applied. Exams are weekly. That isnt much of an answer I guess this early in the A.M. but I hope it helps a little!

The only thing might speed it up is if we took summer courses, but it would have to be designed like my pharm class was. Go from may term throughout the summer. 9 hrs feel like 12. We don't spend a lot of time in lecture, but what's expected to be covered outside of lecture is more than you can image. Even with an A you don't know it ALL!! We don't see it as students because we are eager to graduate, but I think the breaks are for our own good. First semester is over and we are on break, but the emails are still coming! We have a math test 4 days after we return which must have 90 or above to continue. Who do you think gone relax this whole break time without studying? Not Me!! Lol! #got to love Nursing school
Wow! That is a lot. I guess I'm just a bit anxious. My ultimate goal is to be an APN (not sure what kind yet) but I spent the first 2.5 years of my college career not knowing what or who I wanted to be and now that I know I'm ready to take over the world, lol. Thanks for the great information. I'm just going to have to learn patience and to just enjoy the journey.
lth1123 thanks so much for all that info! Congrats on getting through your first semester too!
future_wonder_woman you will do awesome, and yes, enjoy the journey. Thank God we don't have to do it alone though!
leahgirl100, BSN prereqs all depend on where you plan on getting your BSN at. Check the degree plan at that school and follow that plan. For example, I am finishing mine at Texas Tech after nursing school. I downloaded their degree plan, highlighted all the courses I needed to take before then, put them in order of priority and crossed them out as I took them. I'm a bit OCD so that works for me!
mrskebo- welcome! Wow I would choose which ever is convenient for you. I'm applying at NH then Montgomery and Tomball. Cyfair is too far from my kiddos but some dont have that restriction so do what feels best for you!
Thanks SparklesMedic! I know I do eventually want to get my BSN but I'm hoping that I can take a break from school and just enjoy working for a while before I go back to school. I know that I am probably not the only one but I am soooo nervous about the work load and how I am going to handle it. I have a 10 month old who I am currently staying home with except for classes and I know once I start the program that it is going to majorly change how much time I have to spend with him. I know we can all do it though!!!
You're right, we can do it! I have a 3yr old and 4 yr old that I home school. I've been working on my chore schedule, rotating 30 day menu plans and childcare back up while looking for a school to put my angels into next fall. I'm usually good at time management so I'm pretty sure this will work without sacrificing too much mommy time, but I sure will miss teaching them myself for a couple of years . Of course it looks really good on paper, we'll see how well it works in reality! The way I see it though, failing to plan is planning to fail. I just need to remember to be flexible to change, that I'm not really good at!
It will all work out....I have a 9 year old and a 6 year old. Thankfully they are in school. The summer months will be the hardest. I unfortunately will have to work part time as well. I have gotten too far to even think about not finishing. I am very anxious to get it done though. Sooooo ready to get my application in because the waiting is the worst part. It really burns that I had to give up my spot at HCC because I would have started next Monday, but I think I will be in a better position if accepted into Lone Star.

I'm applying to as many as possible. Cy-Fair, Montgomery, North Harris, & Tomball with NH being my #1. I may even go ahead apply for the LVN programs coming up at Mont. and Cy Fair
