I didn't see a thread on here for Fall 2011 applicants to the Lonestar nursing program, so I decided to start one.:) I will be applying to Montgomery as my first choice and am really nervous about taking the HESI test with all of the added components. I applied to Kingwood this past application period with an 11.5652 and got an alternate spot, competition was fierce. So, here I go again, hopefully I'll get in this time around. I'm really nervous about the A&P portion of the HESI. I feel like I've forgotten alot of what I learned. Any suggestions from anyone?
Good luck to all applying:)
Congrats to all of those who have been accepted to the Lone Star Nursing Program! I am currently a Nursing student at North Harris and plan to graduate May 2012. I remember coming to this website before I got accepted and remember being as nevous as most of you are. This journey has been tough... do-able, but VERY tough. I just wanted to say enjoy your summer and your freedom now because that will be out the window come August. :) I will be attending Camp Wanna Win, which I recommend to EVERYONE to come who has been accepted to NH. I am not sure on the dates yet, but I know it will be one or two day the week before school starts and it will be a lot of fun! If anyone has any questions let me know, i will try to answer them.
What activites are going to be offered at Camp Wanna Win?
Yes, sorry for the delay. I just started the bridge program to get my LVN license this summer and then work as an LVN in my last year of nursing school! I recommend that to anyone after you finish your first year of nursing school, its called MEEPS. Its pretty intense and its M- Th 630am-5pm. ALL SUMMER LONG! I have to tell myself that it will pay off in the end. lol.
Anyways, your schedule for next semester will look like this:
Monday/ Tuesday you should have lecture from 8am til 1030AM. You will have Lab one of those days (they will pick that time for you) it can range from Monday or Tuesday, it can be right after lecture or a PM lab that starts about 2 hours after lecture. So you may have to wait around if you get the PM lab time. Usually they will rotate you if your first semester you had lab right after lecture, the following semester to make it fair, they will schedule you the PM lab time and v. versa. OKAY, so that sums up your M-T, then if you have a Wednesday clinical you will do that ALL day 630-430. Then Thursday is an off day, unless your clinical is scheduled that day (If you have a Thursday clinical you will have Wednesday off). Then every other Friday you will have a test... Some test days you may have Three tests ( math, lecture, and lab), but I am not sure how they will do their test next semester so for sure plan on at least 2 tests every other week (Math and Lecture). Then you will have your weekends off (Not really "off", but you will not be in school). During the weekends you usually work on your never ending careplans (some take 16+ hours) and studying for lecture. So that is your typical nursing week. Yall will find out more in Orientation tomorrow and get to meet some upper level students. I will not be there tomorrow bc my summer program, but I will see yall at camp wanna win. let me know if you have any other questions! :) and sorry for any typos, my eyes are VERY tired right now!
ummm, they are changing it up from what we did when we started, but i know that its upper level students who will talk with you on how to prepare yourself and family to get ready for this program. we let you in on supplies we recommend, how to take notes and be successful in the program, and i think we will cover some math skills. there should be door prizes and you can even win text books and last summer they gave out a couple gift cards to the school coffee shop/ book store! its really just to welcome you and give you helpful tips on how to succeed.
Hi thanks for the encouragement and congrats for being so close to graduation. I'm sure that feels amazing!I have a question. I don't know which campus you're at but I have friend that works at Memorial Hermann in The Woodlands & she said some if the students from NH are doing a fast track program to graduate in 18 months & that it is only offered at NH. I have not head about this before. I know you can take classes through the summer and receive your LVN license at the end, but have heard those classes are only for about 30 students. Do you know anything about the fast track? Or if there is such a thing?
And yes, I definitely plan on going to camp Wanna Win. It sounds like so much fun!!
For RN? The only program that I am aware of for RN is the basic track program, while Cyfair offers a Blocked program. Regaurdless they are both 2 year programs, they are just set up differently. While NH teaches most of the same subjects every semester but increases the level of thinking each semester (ex: semester 1 you will learn basic topics about pregnancy, then come semester 4 you will be learning high risk pregnancy topics). . . the level of critical thinking increases every semester, while at Cyfair, you do block learning and you learn EVERYTHING about lets say Labor and Delivery in an 8 week session and I dont think you will revisit that topic for the rest of the program.
Back at your question though; I do not know about a fast track program for RN. Two years is the minimum time you have to get all your hours in I believe. Minus summer and winter break it is less than 24 months you will be in the program. I would ask at orientation. As far as getting your LVN in the summer, yes you can do that. There are 30 spots available. I am in the program now, I just started yesterday. About 1/2 the people that signed up dropped because the program literally DRAINS the LIFE OUT OF YOU and most people right now what to enjoy their summer or have kids or other obligations like working or what not. So as far as you getting in, you should be fine if you are considering getting your LVN after your first year. Look forward to meeting yall in MEEPS! My name is Nicole if yall have any more questions, feel free to ask! :)

wow that was ton of information thank you so much!! i 'm looking forward to meeting you at camp wanna win:d
i thought she was mistaken about a "fast track" for rn, but i figured if anyone would know the answer you would. i will not be one of the ones trying to get into meeps next summer. my youngest daughter is graduating next year so will be busy with that in june & getting her ready to go off to college. besides at my age your schedule this summer sounds like it may kill me:uhoh3: good luck girl and take naps on the weekend if you can:o
Also, in addition to your week, your probably looking at 60+ hours a week studying and in class and school time if not more. I spent no less than 8 hours a day studying and on clinical days were my only days I would maybe study only 1 or 2 hours if I wasnt working on a careplan as soon as I got home. Just know everyone is different. The hours I put in you might not need... While I know some people put in more hours than I did... so it is a very individual thing and how much you already previously know about the world/art of nursing. ( I came in knowing NOTHING!!) I recommend a clean, clear, quiet work space (like the kitchen table) so you can spead all your books on the table and have all your resouces there infront of you. :)

I am here to help anyone with questions because I know when I started last year I was in the dark about almost everything. I wish I had someone to answer my questions. MEEPS is great if you can do it, but there are MANY who choose not to do it or have other priorities going on, just like you had mentioned. I will be seeing yall in August. Ill be on here periodically through out the summer, like I said, if you have any more questions, just ask! :) I hope orientation was a good experience. If they gave you list of books, I would recommend looking on Amazon.

Thanks Nlytwyn for the advise. Can you give me an idea about the kind of schedule and hours we can expect the first semester in the program??
