Lone Star Spring 2011

Published

Okay, for all of us that did not get into the Lone Star Fall 2010 program and are trying again for the Spring...here we go again.

I'm retaking AP2 this summer (I have a B so now I want an A) to increase my points. After that I just don't know what else to do because I have all co-reqs completed, CPR done and Immunizations done. What are your plans to increase your chances of getting in for the Spring?

I also took the HESI during the January application period. I wanted at least two shots at taking it..one during January app period and the other during the summer app period. You can only take it once per application period. I was fortunate to score well and now I don't have to take it again. Also... remember they take your most recent HESI scores, not your highest..

Hey everybody! I am applying for the spring 2011 program as well, and hope to get into Kingwood, since its the closest. I am taking Micro this summer and Eng (to get an A this time around). I havent taken Hesi yet, but Im wondering when we can start taking it? Good luck to everybody! Hope to see yall in January!

Lone Star only requires Reading and Math portions of HESI, right? I bought the Evolve study guide and want to make sure I don't need to worry about the other sections: vocabulary, grammar, biology, chemistry, a&P and Physics?

HI ,Kmbrly Currently Lonestar only requires Reading and Math ,but at the Nursing info session at Moco we were told that vocabulary,Grammer, and A&P may soon be added. Also, the Hesi entrance scores will expire in a year. These changes are not in effect currently ,but they're working to get them approved.

I am also planning on applying for Kingwood in the Spring. I can only do nights as I have a FT job and a 16 month old daughter!!! Not sure how I am going to do it all, but I suppose I will figure it out! Would love to hear from other mom's who also have to work FT. I'm taking A&P 1 CE class right now, b/c it has been a long time since I took it last. I took the HESI already. I think my score should be 11.64.

shanae, did they say if the HESI change would be for the upcoming application period? i hope not! :) I was glad that was all we had to do, reading and math!

Has anybody heard about the average score to get into the online RN program at Lone Star via the quest program? I thought I read on here someone had an 11.1 something but I can't find it. I have an Associate's in Management and am applying to the online program for Spring 2011. I know that when I talked to the advisor about the night RN program she said it was 11.4 for last year.

I haven't heard about the Quest Program scores this year, but last year I think they took in the high 10s. But Samtastic, I think you have to hold a bachelor's degree? I was interested in it as well, but the advisor told me that it hasn't been as successful as the classroom students.

I also talked with my advisor at Kingwood last week and she said that Kingwood has over 650 applicants and they take the top 80. 2009-2010 scores were from 11.4-12.0

I am also hoping for a spot. I took the HESI the last week of the LVN application period and I will be applying with an 11.652. I wanted a better Reading Section score, but the advisor made it clear that if I took it again in the RN application period, that they take the most recent score, not the highest. I think I will take my chances with my current HESI score. I can't wait for July to send in my application, but waiting until October is going to be trying!

I checked with the school and at first the advisor did tell me that I needed to have a Bachelor's to get into the Quest program. But then I checked with the actual administrators of the program and they told me that you can have an Associate's or better and still get in. I wouldn't mind doing the campus program, but am willing to do the online one as long as I can get in. If I have a better chance of doing the online one then I am taking it. I can't believe how difficult it is to get into this program. I will have 4 points for prereq's, 3.7 for the English/Psychology/A&P points (darn B in English!), and 3.4892 for my HESI points which would be 11.1892. I plan on retaking the HESI this summer though to see if I can score higher on the Reading. When I took it the first time I didn't realize that the Math portion was not really counted. I did the Math part first and scored a 95. By the time the Reading came I was already beat. Hopefully I will score better on the Reading this round. Thanks for the info on the online program.

What is the quest program? Haven't heard of this one yet. If it is an online program and you have to have a degree, I am going for it! :) lol

Samtastic- that is great news! I was under the assumption that it had to be a bachelors. From what I've heard from a couple friends that are in the program is that they took around 10.7-12.0. It would make it nice to do all of your lectures at home at your own pace for sure...and then only come in for clinicals. I think you can also finish as early as 15 months. I would suggest re-taking Engl as bad as it sounds...I had a B back in 1996 and I just took it again as an 8wk course back in December. There's a really easy lady at Montgomery that doesn't require much but a 4 page paper. I keep writing "according to my advisor," but she strongly recommended that I tried to get an A in the 3 classes along with the 27 credits for the 2nd 4 pts. It has cost me an extra semester and year to apply, but I think you will feel more at ease if you have the 3 As in the first box. Then all you have to do is try and get in the 90s on your HESI reading.

***And I definitely feel you about being pooped out by the time you got to the reading part. I did the same thing because I was so worried about the math that I did it first. Even knowing that the Reading was my main concern, I did the math first...should have done the reading first because I kind of rushed through it. You can do it!!***

I was going to try that...and still may if my score doesn't get me in. I was also under the assumption that the Kingwood Program was M-W (1pm-5pm or 5pm-10pm) with 1 clinical day of your choice (Th, Fr or Sat 6am-6pm) but it is MTW (lecture) PLUS 1 clinical day. I guess that's better than being in class M-F all day long.

That's what I don't get...how can other Lonestar programs go everyday and Kingwood can manage the 3 day lecture and 1 clinical? Well, I'm not complaining because I still need to work and have a life with my child...but I just don't get why all of the campuses won't embrace the fact that some of us are older with children and can't commit to a full time program.

kmbrlyw - there isn't much on the website about the Quest Program...you may have to inquire about it at the campus. There are flyers in the nursing office about it, but it doesn't say much. I think the application period for the Quest Program is like Sept-October only?? Don't quote me on that! And I think they only take about 8-15 people...and according to my advisor, about 300 or more apply for a spot in that program.

From what I've heard you can complete the Quest program's lecture's online and you complete your clinicals on the weekend. It sounds like a good deal to me since you go at your own pace. You can finish earlier than the 2 year regular nursing program if you are motivated enough to do so.

jenniferneedlenazi - thanks for the advice on the English class. I was going to redo it last semester, but I really hate English and I hate to pay for the same class twice. I have a backup plan if I do not get into the RN program at Lone Star. I have already been accepted into University of Texas - Arlington. I will just continue to take classes for the online BSN program. It would be crazy to not be accepted by Lone Star only to end up going to UTA. Guess I will see what happens. I want to have my BSN anyways, so I guess it wouldn't be that bad.

Samtastic - believe me...I HATED having to pay AGAIN for a class just to get a better grade!

But I'm curious about the online program at UT Arlington...are you going to have to go move Arlington? Or it's strictly an online program to get your BSN?

Congrats on being accepted to the program already!! That's exciting:yeah:and an excellent back up plan! I don't have a back up plan...I can't leave the county because of my divorce decree, so I have to either do Lonestar or UTMB (which I don't have time for since I have to work!)

I have been accepted into UTA, but not officially by the nursing program. They have a list of prerequisite classes you have to take as well before you can apply. Plus you have to take a lot more sections of the HESI. They offer all of their prerequisites online with the exception of Chemistry. You can choose to take them at the campus or be dually enrolled in a community college like Lone Star to complete your prerequisites. Once you are accepted in you can complete your BSN in as little as 15 months. You do not have to live in Arlington to be in this program. My advisor told me that they are coordinating with partner hospitals in Houston as well for this program. So you would be able to do your clinicals here in Houston. Another thing about the program is if you are employed by a partner hospital your tuition is less. Unfortunately, I am not employed with a hospital at all...but would be nice to be so I could get a discount. Oh, and one more thing...you do not have to have an RN or Bachelor's degree to get in. :)
