Okay, for all of us that did not get into the Lone Star Fall 2010 program and are trying again for the Spring...here we go again.
I'm retaking AP2 this summer (I have a B so now I want an A) to increase my points. After that I just don't know what else to do because I have all co-reqs completed, CPR done and Immunizations done. What are your plans to increase your chances of getting in for the Spring?
mks1014 I know what you mean about what others say regarding our score. I have been told by several nursing students that my score is good and I will get into the program. I scored 94% on the math portion so I guess I still have a chance. I really wonder what other factors are taken into consideration (i.e. overall GPA, or being a member of the honor society) because all of our scores are really good. Well my prayer is that we will all receive an acceptance letter in October. Blessings to you all.
Remember everyone math score is the tie breaker. :) I know I am actually quite irritatied at this whole process...sorry I know I will probably be blasted but the process is strange to me that so much is riding on that stupid reading score. I feel that more emphasis should be placed on individuals who only take Anatomy I and II ONE time and receive an A. I had students in class with me who were on thier THIRD attempt to make an A and they were only taking that COURSE!! I feel that these students will get into nursing and not be able to handle the fast pace and the intense work load involved. They were all also obsessed with getting into certain professors classes because they were "easier" you don't need easy in nursing you need good information and instructors who challange you. Has to be a better way for admission...anyway :)
From what I gather, our nursing career will be A LOT of documentation. We need to understand what is written about our patients on their treatment plans, we need to write up our own patient treatment plan for each patient we have, and we have to document each treatment we gave to each of our patients. That means a good deal of our daily lives will be spent reading other nurses notes and writing, writing, writing. That is probably why it is so important to have a good score in Reading. I went to the info session at HCC Coleman (for curiosity sake) and they talked about how you will be required to write a 30 page paper every week while doing clinicals! I am thinkiing Lone Star may be the same. I asked Kathy at CyFair what if there were 100 people with a score of 12, how would you decide who gets in? She said first they would go by the math score then it would be GPA after that. At least it's not a lottery system like some schools. I know people that have been trying for years with the lottery system and still can't get into a school.

I sooo agree. It's not fair to judge the student who was able to retain the info the first time they took AP as equal to the student who had to take the class three times to retain the same info. Also, why not use cumulative GPA? I have run into a lot of students who don't even try in the classes that are not used in GPA because "they don't count". It's BS if you ask me.....................

I work for one of the largest hospital systems in Houston. I see the day to day work of the nurses on the floor. I know that a lot of what we will go through in nursing school is nothing like what we will be doing on the job. I review the doctors notes, progress notes, case manager notes and I feel fairly comfortable with the writing process. FruityPebble is correct we will spend a lot of time writing while in nursing school. It helps to have healthcare experience and nurses as friends.
Hey everyone, I just applied to the nursing program for the spring 2011. I am from Austin and I was communiting to Temple College. I missed getting into the nursing program at Temple by one point because they minus a point if you dont live in district and they add a point if you do in live in district. I have decided to pack my bags and move to Houston so I can get my associates and then transfer to UT health science center.
I have applied to CyFair as my first choice and Kingwood as my second choice. I have an A in A&PI and Psyc and I have a B in English 1, so I'm averaging my points to be a 3.6 for my GPA. I have taken the 27 hours so I get 4 points for the general education classes. I made a 97.80% on the Hesi Reading and and 86% on the math so that would be 3.9 for the Hesi score. I have averaged my score to be an 11.578, do yall think that is a good enough score to get into CyFair?
My next question is if anyone could tell me the good areas to live around Houston that has reasonable prices to rent a house? I am somewhat familiar with the Houston area but I need some help figuring out the good areas to live.
Good luck to all that applied and I would appreciate any information that anyone could give!!!
Hey I have not taken it but be careful it is offered thru the Psychology dept and the Math dept. UT will take the Psychology dept offering of the class (it is easier I understand) but most other schools want the one from the math dept. Just an FYI I had a friend who took the wrong one for the school she wanted to go to and had to retake it !!! and she hates math. :)
I know that if you want to go to CyFair you need to get close to the campus if possible. The traffic around the area is a real pain so I would live close if possible. Perhaps some of the other people on this board can give you some suggestions. I live in the Woodlands and would NEVER even consider driving in the traffic to get to Cyfair it would be horrible. Your score is pretty good I think.

If history is any predictor of what the cutoff will be, you should be fine. That is a very good score. Do you have a family? There are some really great neighborhoods in Cyfair. Fairfield, Bridgeland and Stonegate are all nice for families. I migrated out here from Houston proper when my daughter started school and we love it. If you don't have a family, there are some really nice, new apartments very close to campus.
Hey guys!...i just need some good advice for the HESI reading part... Im pretty good at math...so im not that worried with that. i am worried with the reading part though..
im applying at lonestar cyfair...
thanks guys!
I managed to get a 100 on the Reading portion of the HESI by studying the HESI evolve reach Admission Assessment Exam Review and the HESI Admission Assessment Study Guide. The questions on the Reading portion are kind of tricky so you have to really read and re read to make sure you know exactly what point they are emphasizing. Sometimes there can be 2 answers that are correct, but one is more correct than the other. I laugh when I read some people say not over-think it, but IMHO, you must over-think it to see every angle in which the question is posed. If you miss the emphasis, you could miss the question.
Hope that helps! And good luck to you!
