Lone Star Kingwood 2010

Published

Hello everyone!

I just wanted to start a new thread for kingwood/cyfair applicants. This is the moment I have been waiting for for 2 years! :nurse: I will be turning in my application when I return from vacation next week. My score is at 11.489 as of yesterday! I took the Hesi....again....yesterday :D and will be going on vacation Mon. I don't think my score has gone in yet either.

Anyway...I'm hoping that my score will be good enough for this time around. What was everyone elses score? I think the cut off the last couple years has been 11.4.

I have created this thread because I know that this site has been extremely helpful for me! And I want to return the favor for whoever else is applying or working towards applying! Also, in order for us to chat or whatever else while we are waiting soooo long for a letter! :banghead:

If ANYONE has any questions...just ask and I will try the best of my ability to answer it. I know quite a bit about this program, so I'm sure I can help in some way! :heartbeat

does anyone know how to download the books we will need to an ipod touch? also im wanting to get myself one but is it worth it when it comes to clinicals??can anyone list me the benfits for having one?

i went to the information session on wednesday, december 2. it was mentioned that biol 1322 nutrition is required for graduation. at least two of us were unaware of this. i could not find that online. i did find two documents that i highly recommend everyone read - these are the student handbook:

www.lonestar.edu/documents/nursing-nh/nh_std_hndbk_part_i.pdf

www.lonestar.edu/documents/nursing-nh/nh_std_hndbk_part_ii.pdf

the first document says this:

"thirty-one hours of general academics and related courses are required and 41 hours of nursing courses in the integrated basic nursing program. it is the responsibility of the student to be certain that prerequisite and co-requisite courses are completed as prescribed in the degree plan. nursing faculty/counselor and the program director are available throughout the semester and during every registration period to advise students on required course work. it is the responsibility of the student to review the individual degree plan/advising profile with a nursing counselor each semester. failure to review the degree plan on a regular basis could jeopardize progression to the next nursing course or delay the granting of the aas degree. the student cannot sit for the state licensing exam or receive a permit for work until all required courses for the degree are completed"

what 31 hours of general academics and related courses? take at look at any of the scoring charts:

biol 2401 human anatomy & physiology i

biol 2402 human anatomy & physiology ii

biol 2420 medical microbiology

psyc 2301 general psychology

psyc 2314 life-span growth & development

soci 1301 principles of sociology

engl 1301 composition & rhetoric i

spch 1318 or 1311 interpersonal communication or introduction to speech communication

kine physical activity course (1 hour)

elective fine arts / humanities (3 hours)

my interpretation - please confirm or correct it - is that all of these courses must be completed in order to graduate. since it takes around 11.4 to get admitted, you have to have 27 of those hours completed to be admitted. if my interpretation is correct, you'll have to finish the remaining hours before you can graduate. in other words, you can't, for example, skip spch or kine.

does biol 1322 have to be taken to graduate? where is that in writing?

lone star college has specific general education requirements for a.a. and a.s. degrees. these degrees require other general education requirements such as history. do these requirements not apply to nursing students because an a.d.n. degree is neither an a.a. or an a.s.?

if you consider a calendar year as three semesters (spring, summer, fall), then there are 1 or 2 semesters between the time you apply and the time you enroll in the nursing program. i'm sure most people would like to use that time productively taking anything required that would lessen the course load after being admitted. pharmacology would be one such course (it's actually required for paramedics entering the paramedic transition program) and maybe nutrition would be another.

jpchouston,

The 31 hours that you need are basically all the non nursing classes (this is all the classes you see that does not have RSNG. All these classes NEED to be taken in order for you to get it. This is not the requirement, BUT if you want the whole 4 points (which you will need to get in), you need to have them completed. Also, I know for sure if you haven't taken Pharm and are accepted into the program...you will need to have it completed in your first semester of nursing school. I believe this also true for Micro. The remainder of the classes will be taken in nursing school. My advice would be....take every single class you possibly can (Micro and Pharm) before you get in! About the semester you were talking about while waiting to get in, it is only one semester. You will apply, and if you get in, you will start that very next semester. As for nutrition, I think you are thinking if you are going to eventually go for BSN, you will need to take nutrition. But I am almost 100% sure that nutrition is NOT required for ADN. And as far as the other classes for A.S. and stuff, you should not have to take History classes or anything like that, UNLESS, you are going for BSN or further. And this is what I will eventually do and some History classes are required for that program (thru the University Center). Hope this helped!!! :D

Susan!!!

I got my card! All clear! If you want, we can ride together after class Tues if you want to register, unless you wanna do it Mon, that's fine too. I have a final at 10 on Mon, but whatever day is fine with me. Let me know!!!

The Lone Star College Catalog can be found here at ]]]]http://www.lonestar.edu/departments/curriculuminstruction/Catalog_2009-2010_Complete.pdf.

]]]]It is the official set of rules. A nutrition class, which can be either BIOL 1322 or VNSG 1116, is required to obtain a Vocational Nursing Certificate. There is absolutely no mention whatsoever of a nutrition class being required for admission into or graduation from an A.D.N. program.

]]]]Page 95 (the printed page number is 95; it appears as page 97 in the Adobe Acrobat page counter) of the Catalog is worth reading. It explains the general requirements for a Associate of Applioed Science. Everybody has to meet these requirements. It shows why SOCI 1301 is needed - it satisfies the multicultural requirement. As any applicant should know by now, a fine arts course must be taken. Not just any course will do. The list of specific courses that fulfill the fine arts requirement are listed on page 95. They are:

In other words, you can get accepted without taking one of these classes. But you'll have to complete one of them in order to graduate.

oh, I'm quite confused as to what you are trying to get across.....:sniff:. It may be me.....I'm a little lost these days. However, I've fulfilled all my requirements for the program and will be starting in Jan. When are you planning to apply and where at? What classes have you taken already?

It's really very simple. I'm pointing people to the authoritative rule book. If you look at the web site of the nursing department on any campus, you're told that the fine arts course must be an approved one - but you aren't told what courses are approved. I provided instructions on how to find the official list of approved fine arts courses.

Also, the scoring chart could leave somebody with the mistaken impression that a fine arts course isn't required. If you don't take fine arts but you do take everything else, you'll have 28 hours, which gets you the full 4 points you need to get admitted. But you can't graduate until the fine arts course is completed. So, if you apply in the spring to start in the fall, you might want to take that fine arts course from the approved list in the spring or summer before starting the nursing courses.

Finally, at the information session last week, we were told that a nutrition course is required to graduate. That isn't true of all programs according to the Lone Star Catalog. A lot of questions can be answered by reading the Catalog. Remember, since it is a pdf, you can use the search feature in Adobe Acrobat.

oh ok gotcha. I wasn't sure if you were asking a question or not. Again, I'm a little lost these days. lol. Think its the weather! Great, I'm sure many people will find that info very useful. Many people have no idea what to even do to get started, so I'm sure that will help point them in the right direction.

Does anyone know what happens at Lonestar if you fail out of a class or have to drop it for some unexpected reason--c-section for pregnancy, car accident, death, etc.

Are you completely out of the program or are you just behind a semester or so?

I don't plan on any of the above I just always like to be prepared and know what I'm getting into!
