Lone Star Fall 2020

Published

It may be early but around this time, those applying to Fall 2020 are engulfed in an A&P course trying for the grades needed. Collaboration and early encouragement can only help. Fall seems to be the large cycle and a lot have had the same instructors. Some of us could even be sitting by each other in class and not know.

I know we cannot say who we are taking. I'm in A&P 1 at Tomball in a hybrid course. If I can be of any help I will do so. I have a study guide for A&P that's about 90 pages. In addition, I have a pdf of one of the books (I think it's Marieb).

Goodxluck in class everyone and hope to see you in nursing school in the Fall!

I just noticed when we go on WebEx we’re way down in numbers, only 14-15 people log on every session. Lone Star extended the withdrawal date to May 5th and a ton of people couldn’t handle it while dealing dealing with their own stuff. It’s a bummer..

That sucks . I know my lab class was full but then it kinda fell off 3rd class it was only like 14 people or less . That was before corona

Hi,

Congratulations! I'm taking my HESI this Friday through ProctorU. Are you allowed to use a blank sheet of paper for the math? Any tips for the HESI on what to study?

The sheet of paper is allowed.. just show it to your webcam when they’re walking you through the set-up. The calculator is on the screen. You also need to show your phone, and put it away somewhere they can see (I stuffed it under a pillow). You need to scan the four sides of the room, and the floor as well. I shifted my iMac around and that seemed to suit just fine. My proctor said Lone Star allowed bathroom breaks, but that I needed to notify him in the chat box prior to standing up. My proctor never responded to my requests, so I sat in silence, with a full bladder, for about four hours. I digress..

As far as studying for the HESI? Ho, brother. I’d message you, but I don’t have that capability on the site yet. The test is surprisingly short. I jumped into math and reading first, because I figured they’d take the longest for me. I had a 96 in math and 94 in reading. Each screen is a new, individual question, and I was under the impression that you could return to a previous answer, so I skipped two without realizing that it’s a final submission with each question. Hence my two unanswered in reading. Math had about ten fill in the blank questions, and the majority of it was simply ratios. I’d say I over-prepared in my conversion studies, but I’ll need that down the line anyway.

Grammar was a bit of a jerk. I scored 100, but I honestly moved through the questions like, ehhh you’re drawing straws here. English is my first language, but that makes it no less obnoxious in syntax.

Vocabulary was not altogether difficult. Context clues were spot on. 100 there.

Anatomy.. shortest section, maybe 30ish questions.. just think back to basics. It is not intended to trick you. I thought I had a trick question and it was the one I missed. 96 on A&P.

The Lone Star set up had Biology and Chemistry, as well as the personality test and critical thinking, on my roster when I signed in. I knew what I did need, although it goosed me for a minute to see other sections not completed when I submitted.

Critical thinking is straight up what would you do as a nurse. NCLEX-style prioritizing. You can absolutely be coached, so don’t beat yourself up. 920 there..

Good luck!

I think I’m going to apply for Kingwood’s evening program that starts in the Spring of 2021. I’ll be starting a new job in June and the training is Monday-Friday. After training, the schedule will remain Monday-Friday, hours vary. I don’t know if it would be appropriate to ask for schedule adjustments and/or accommodations when I haven’t been there a full 90 days. Any suggestions?

CONGRATS on the new job! If I were you I’d wait and see which campus you get accepted to. If it’s your first or second choice I would think about asking work to accommodate your nursing schedule. Getting into the Kingwood Camus doesn’t 100% mean you’ll get the night class option, I’ve heard of a few people counting on that option but they still put them in day classes. That being said, Kingwood is a great campus and by then you would have been at the new job a while so even if they put you in day classes you might feel more comfortable asking for a schedule change?

Thank you so much! I will definitely take your advice into consideration. I know Kingwood isn’t guaranteed and I would hate to put off a whole semester just to get put into the day program.

Does anyone know when is the deadline for application and when they will let us know if we got accepted or not???

The deadline is June 12 . Now when they let us know if we accepted or not is a mystery. I would assume sometime in July they will let us know . I would be hopeful at the end of June since it’s computer app based that’s easier ?

Will Spring registration open in June? My life seems to be taking a turn, and I am planning on jumping in to apply!!

fall won’t work for me, so I’m hoping to apply for the Spring program. Hope I even have a chance with a 7.77 ?

Are you wondering about the Spring application? The basic track for Cy-Fair and Kingwood are opening June 2 through August 7, according to the site. It’s kind of crazy that the Fall app deadline got pushed back to June 12. I suppose that means from June 2 to June 12 there will be two applications open? Curious about that overlap.

My condolences for your circumstances. You really seem enthusiastic to get the program started. For the record, your score at 7.77 is KILLER. Are you able to float that HESI score to Spring?

In truth, this process is stressful and convoluted enough WITHOUT a pandemic. Maybe waiting until Spring would give you a huge advantage, while the program works out the inevitable kinks that’ll come about in Fall, if we’re STILL stuck online. I hope you can find a silver lining!

Yeah Fall isn't looking too bright for me either. I'm torn between starting in the Fall or just waiting until Spring. If they offer the fall semester online, I will go ahead and start and then possibly transfer to Kingwood in the Spring. I'll be working Monday-Friday for the most part so I'm really not able to go in person unless I go to class after work and clinicals on Saturdays. Hence, why I'm leaning toward applying to Kingwood. You have an awesome score so you'll have no problem getting accepted!

I would wait . I would apply to both . I’m sure we probably won’t be doing any hands on clinical stuff just due to the pandemic. I would wait till you get in & the actual schedule comes out . With cases increasing I’m sure we won’t be going to clinicals it’ll probably be online just like they have it online currently
