Lone Star Fall 2012 ADN Applicants

Published

I applied to Lone Star - ADN program Spring 2012. I was accepted as an alternate. I am hoping to get a call from the nursing department saying there is a spot for me. If not I will be reapplying for the next application period for entrance to the program in the Fall 2012. Good luck everyone!!!!

Tlcarter oh ok I'm taking pharm now most ppl in there start nursing in the fall, just wondering if I'd seen u before, how did u do in pharm. personally I don't think they should have nursing homes as clinicalls all the nurses do there is pass pills wrap bandage...that's it, most are only LVN. I wonder if the clinical locations will change throughout the semesters or if it will be the same options?

Yeah, I wonder how you'd get to practice everything you need to practice? That's a good point. At orientation they were telling us that there's too much competition for clinical sites because of the million nursing programs. BSN programs from the med center are having to come all the way out here to get clinical spots. So...many...nurses!

I have taken many of my classes at various campuses, so it is possible we might have passed each other in passing. :) I earned an A in Pharmacology. As for the nursing home clinical sites, I completely agree that in school it should be a hospital setting, but there are so many schools. I know I've seen some University students at local hospitals so I guess the 2 year degrees get last assignment/picks. Well, I'm hopeful that the clinical sites will change throughout the program, but at least I have my rehab location already done early in the program so hopefully I will have hospitals as I advance through the program.

So with all my financial aid issues, I finally scraped up enough money to buy some books & holy batman Fundamentals Of Nursing is a huge mamba-jamba

Speaking of financial aid, does anyone know how long it takes Lone Star to consider an appeal? I've been waiting a few weeks now, and haven't heard anything yet. :(

Yay! Glad you were about to get some books! I've gotten so far is Fundamentals and Clinical Nursing Skills, and uh yeah...Fundamentals is freaking huge. I really hope we don't actually ever have to take it to class.

I was told up to 8 weeks since every one and their mother basically appeals at the same time.

Ugh. Guess I won't be checking my Lone Star email every day, then, lol.

Thanks, Steph!

Hopefully they'll get to you sooner than that!

So, I'm not sure if I missed something, but I feel really unprepared from orientation. I don't even know what supplies we need, other than the book list. I assume a stethoscope? Notebooks? Do we need a BP cuff? She said we can wear any scrubs we want to Basic Care, but do we HAVE to wear scrubs or was that optional?

And since we aren't following our schedule for the first few weeks, did she say we're going M-F 8-5 or just M and Tues?

I feel like a need a second orientation.

Are you talking about the Prep for Basic Care Course? I think there's something on one of the pieces of paper we got that said 8-9 was self-study time, and that class would run from 9-5. (What I'm really hoping is that we prove to be such exceptional students that we won't really have to spend that much time in this particular class, lol.) With regard to the regular semester, I seem to remember her saying that our clinicals will be Wednesdays AND Thursdays for the first 2-3 weeks, five hours a day.

From what I recall about attire, we're supposed to wear scrubs to the Prep course. I think I'll just wear my regular uniform, though, since I don't have any other scrubs (and don't want to buy any more - no money!).

We will definitely need a stethoscope, and there's some big bag of supplies we have to buy from the bookstore. Not sure what's in it, but if it's anything like what my friend in the Tomball LVN programme has to buy, we will spend a lot of money and use about 3 items a semester.

I dunno...I might need a second orientation, too!

No, I'm talking about the fall semester. She said we won't be following our assigned schedule for the first few weeks, then week 3 or 4 we're supposed to start class times. I heard her say we'll be going to clincals W and Th for the first few weeks, but I thought that was the after those weeks of us all being together?

Theres a kit we need to buy? What paper is that on? I'm guessing I need to get it before Basic Care since I'm sure we'll need some of it for ADLs and whatnot...

I don't even know what to take to my first day of class except the Clincal Nursing book. :/. I'm too type A for guessing games!

Yes, the bag of supplies is on that same sheet that lists the costs of our books and whatnot.
