Lone Star College 2020 LVN to RN transition

Published

Since 2019 transition passed, I wanted to start one for next period. I am taking Pharmacology at NH for Thurs from 11am-2pm. Anyone in the past transition program and want to share some information, please do! Anyone applying for next summer, Hello!! ?

Can someone explain how lone star determine your score? I know you can get up to a total of 8 based on your prerequisites and HESI score. I also will be taking pharmacology online, any advice with that class

Sure. It's divided into 2 sections, each worth 4 points.

The HESI section is simple. Take the various scores you get from your HESI test- AP, math, reading, grammar and vocabulary and average them together. Let's say your average is a 91.5. You take your average and divide it by 25 = 3.66. So you get 3.66 out of 4 possible points.

The pre-req section comprised of your pharmacology, ENGL 1301 and AP grades. An A gets your 4 points, a B gets you 3 points and a C gets you 2 points. You average your GPA/score between those 3 and voila. If you have an A in all three, you would have 12/3 = 4 out of 4 points.

So 3.66 + 4 would be an application score of 7.66, which would all but guarantee you getting in. That is why it is so important to get A's in those prereqs on the score chart. If you drop just one down to a B, you earn 3.66 instead of 4 points for that section and your app score goes from 7.66 to 7.32 - which is approaching "alternate" territory.

Your online pharm class isn't super difficult. It's a lot of busy work. Just don't get behind and you should be fine. When I did mine back in 2015 my instructor was super cool. I missed an entire quiz and still came out with an A. Moreover, the last week of the class she sent out an email saying that she was opening everything back up so that any missed assignments or quizzes could be done and turned in for full credit. Not sure if she's still teaching it though. It was a breeze for me.

So to give you an example by what I mean, I'm not dogging on them. Overall it's been solid. But there have been problems. The professors act like they care for feedback and want to hear from us, but anything a student mentions something contradictory, they are basically told in nicer words "this is the way it is." Examples - during lecture, one of the professors who has no business lecturing - she basically walks around the room hollering phrases from the book and PP and stumbling through the longer words that are harder to pronounce - she says something out of her own powerpoint. A student raises their hand and offers a contradictory piece of information, directly out of the book. They have always told us to go by the powerpoint. The powerpoint in this case was wrong and her only response was "well go by what's in the book." When the student asked her, OK, what will we be tested on, the professor answered "it comes from the book." The student rebutted with "OK, so if we are being tested on the information in the book, why are we studying wrong information in the powerpoint?" The professor literally, I'm not joking here said "Go by what's in the book!" and continued on with her hoopin and hollarin "lecture." That was it.

Another small example - we have been told, as I mentioned before, to go by the powerpoint. In addition to that we are given a sheet of "Topics and Objectives" that all year they have swore that to be our bible. "If its not on the topics and objectives, you aren't responsible for it." They have said this LITERALLY 1000 times. So for our most recent test we get the powerpoints and notice there is an additional 60 slides of information that covers content NOT on the Topics and Objectives sheet. When questioned, their response was "you need to be familiar with it." So we asked, is it going to be tested on, because it's not on the Topics and Objectives. We were again told, "You are responsible for what's on the T&O sheet." So we asked again...why the extra slides, are we being tested on it? Their answer..."you need to be familiar with it." Was that information on the test... you bet your *** it was.

Little things like this seem trivial...but it happens A LOT! Enough to really discourage you. Just do your best to get YOURSELF through the program and stay out of the politics. They have very clearly adopted the culture that there is ZERO flexibility in the way things are, despite their constant claims to the contrary.

-off the soapbox-

To answer your question, yes I can dig up my book list. But I can tell you right now, you won't need hardly any of it. I will post it and try to give better info on what to get, especially being transition students. You may only need 3 books. Don't waste your 1500 bucks on buying all that crap. And yes. It's crap.

Also, you will need grey scrubs. And yes, you will be in them first semester and will be in clinical first semester. For sure. As I mentioned before, the first week or two are kinda hectic, but they jump right into lecture and your in clinicals by week 4.

My goodness!! That is A LOT to have to deal with. And, no, it does not seem trivial at all. I completely understand where you are coming from. I’m sure every Transition student in your class is working either part or full-time and any extra unnecessary stress is a lot to manage. Like just tell us what we need to do and give it to us RIGHT LOL. Conflicting or misconstruing information is something we shouldn’t have to bargain with, especially considering the fact that we’re trying to learn all we need to in 3 semesters.

And please let me apologize, because I meant no disrespect from my post. I just wanted to elaborate on how many people have said their experience with Lone Star in comparison to other programs and what they’ve heard about them. I definitely agree that the program has its Cons and it could be better in some areas. I hear often how NH has a tendency to “weed out” a lot of their students. I hope with some time they’ll get it together LOL.

Its no rush I’m the booklist at all. I’m always so surprised at how infrequently we use some of the textbooks they say are required LOL. Thank you for the heads up on that. I want to hold on to every single cent that I can LOL.

In regard to the scrubs, I know clinical is a requirement for each semester, but I thought with COVID that we would probably not be in clinical right away and may end up doing virtual sims until the programs have been given the clear to resume clinical rotations. Hopefully by that time, we’ll be able to do so.

And thank you so much for taking the time out to respond to all of us. I’m sure your schedule is crazy right now with work and school.

I received email to schedule finger print yesterday through IdentoGO - Service Board of Nurse Examiners. Do anyone receive same email?

I have not received an email.

Are you LVN?

I think LVN don't need to do fingerprint for BON ?‍⚕️. I'm paramedic btw.

This is accurate. If you are an LVN, they are already on file with the BON. The paramedics have to do it.

Yes I am an LVN. I did the finger printing for LVN school.

Hey does anyone know what the Summer session lesson will consist of? I feel like we should look at some material since we are quarantine LOL ?

@Kinhouston

I am also a paramedic and received the same email, I am confused though because the IdentoGo centers are closed so I’m not sure how they’re expecting us to get this done. There are no appointments available anywhere right now.

Don't even worry about that right now! You wouldn't even know where to start to be honest...LOL. Just focus on enjoying your last few weeks of freedom. The time for fire hose guzzling information is coming... dont you worry!
