LN co-worker needs to be terminated

A few nurses and I work with another nurse who should be fired for many reasons. He is threatening the way he approaches us, gets very angry and gets in our face if we try to tell him how to do things the right way. He will give us a very cold stare and give us the silent treatment if confront him with an issue or delegate a task to him, he hangs out with the NAC's to act like he is there buddy instead of supervising them, he takes up to 3 hour breaks in an 8 hour shift, does not do all his duties (he denies there are duties to do), makes fun of the elderly and calls them jerks, loses his temper in front of residents and I can go on and on. And he thinks he does nothing wrong. We finally turned him in, but were scared to do so. If they only talk to him and then displine him only, then how is it possible for us to work with him again. We are afraid of what he will do when he finds out we turned him in. Has anyone ever dealt with a co-worker like this? Oh.....some of the work he does is very good and he brags up about what an intelligent nurse he is and the rest of us nurses are idiots.

If he is verbally abusing patients,, report him through the state abuse hotline. It's confidential and a thourough investigation will be done. The facility will have nothing to say about it when the state gets involved. Co-workers as well as patients may be interviewed in private and if they are hearing the same circumstances involving his treatment of patients, and his documentation is conflicting they wont have a problem pulling him from the facility and bringing his license up in front of the BON.

If the facility you work at is part of a larger corporation, call the compliance hotline. The call is confidential and be sure to mention the abusive behavior. They are required to followup on hot line calls.

Speed dial the compliance line and report it. I'd report him to the state as well. Name calling and threatening is abuse.

Most states (and I am not talking state boards) have a harrassment hotline where you can state your grievances...and I would take it to them in addition to the board if you want to (but doesn't the BOARD send shivers..does me!)...

I would be very scared of someone like that doing that to patients! That is dangerous, unethical, and down right WRONG to do to a patient let alone your fellow co-workers!

If you don't feel you can talk to your supervisors, then this could be your next step...but I would always talk to your supervisors first...you never know when NOT doing that will come back and bite you (or burn a bridge...which is sad...we do what is right and fear reprisals, yet mandated to do so..uhggggg it is a catch 22 either way).

Good luck and please feel free to keep us up to date...I would like to hear about what you did and how it went!!!!!!

Hi....no, he does not verbally abuse resident to their face. At the nurses station, he will sometimes will make comments that they are jerks and stupid. When he loses his temper in front of residents... it is what he says to us and the way he acts in front of them. The threats and verbal abuse is at the LN's. Majority of the time he is great with residents. The 2 other LN's and I wrote extensive statements and turned it in to our DON.

If I were a helpless L.O.L. in a nsg home, and a staff member lost their temper in front of me, I would be frightened. And if I was confused, I might not know who he was angry at--me or someone else. It certainly wouldn't be building confidence in staff by patients. Sounds like a bad situation for the residents to me?
