why so little info on Monroe College lpn program?

Published

i was just wondering how come it is so hard to get info for monroe lpn program? it is very expensive and it seems that the people over dont like to give info on the phone> anyone went through their program?

i have job security and that is saying a lot these days. i used to work for a corporation that recently let go of 35k employees and i think another 50k are going to get their pink slips soon. i thank god everyday that i am not in a position where i have to worry about losing my job right now. my health care and other benefits are really good and really cheap because i'm in a union. i get plenty of sick days and paid holidays and i never got that in any of the positions i worked in before i became an lpn.

my husband is considering becoming an lpn and i am encouraging him to go ahead and do it. i think he has what it takes and will make a good nurse.

the lpn program was 11 months and it's really time consuming. the program like all other nursing programs is hard to get into but not impossible. what i like is that once you're in you're in....none of that take all of these pre-reqs for x,y,z semesters and then we will think about letting you in. once you pass the entrance exam and the interview you are a nursing student...not a pre-clinical student but a real life certified nursing student and all you have do is maintain so that you can graduate. also remember if you go to monroe to do the lpn you are going to knock out the pre-reqs for the rn so that you don't have to back track to bridge to rn later on down the line.

i walked in off the street with no pre-reqs and from start to finish it takes 22 months to become an rn.

wow that's terrific!

Bxrn,

I am so happy to hear good stories about Monroe... Okay, I have a few questions for you. I am in my first semester and and have a very difficult time managing my work and school load. I am very concerned that me being constantly tired will some how affect my schooling. I try my best and study but after working 8 hrs and being in class all day, I become pooped:zzzzz. So, I recently brought a tape recorder and record lectures. This seems to help a lot with me studying because I play the recorder like a ipod while I sleep so, in essence I am learning while I snooze:yeah:. However, I know that the semesters run quicly and require more than just that method of studying. The two subject areas that scare me are pharm and a&p. I love both professors dearly and must say these women definitely know their stuff however, they cover like 3 chapters in one class that is 3 hrs long. This makes me tired and not take in as much info that I feel is needed inorder to succeed. Just wanted to know if you had any tips for studying and any advice for the up coming and current semseter. Also, how is the clinical phase in the second semester. This semester I was able to work it out where I can still work during the day with the exception of two days... What are the hrs like for clinicals and the professors. And do you have any books or noted that can be of use( If you do, I swear I will give the back:wink2:). Just curious of how this works. Also, how is the pay once you graduate??? And did you pass the NCLEX first try???? I heard recent rumors that only 9 people out od like 18 graduated and all passed nclex on first try except one...(I know that it's possible but, in my opinion false). And by the way PLEASE encourage your husband to go that way you both will have job security and a great pay. Again, thanks for all of your respoces, it truly does help.

i graduated in dec '07....got my license and was employed before february 1st. being willing to work just about anywhere did help me find a job really quickly.

wow, that's absolutely awesome. you're right. that has always been my biggest thing..and i think the way the economy has turned is giving me even more of a rush to get it done. so when did you graduate....? about how long did it take you to find a position? i thought i read that you were a newbie nurse...i'm not sure if my memory is going lol. :) i'm thinking that once i am an lpn i will truly take work anywhere just to get my foot in the door. plus, there isn't one place i can think of that i am opposed to working. not even nursing homes...which many nurses seem not to like..or want to work at.

what would you say is the hardest about getting into the lpn program? the part you described about literally going in with no pre-req's was very encouraging. i hate to go places and they tell you...well you have to do this..that ..and this..and then you may have a chance to get in. i wish i would have gone to monroe a long time ago. hopefully i can get in....it said somewhere that they test only a certain number of times a year...i'm not sure how many and when..but i'm going to speak to a representative tomorrow.

Honestly I have no more books or study notes because I gave everything to the LPN class that started Jan '08. The only thing that I can advise for A&P is to do the study guides and buy books like A&P made easy...or an A&P coloring book.

Clinical rotations are on Thurs and Fridays from 8am-2pm. I'm not going to give you my exact salary but the pay range for a new grad LPN is anywhere from $20-$30/hr depending on who and where you work. I'm thinking that $20 is very low and I wouldn't accept it unless I was getting fantastic benefits.

Yep, I passed the NCLEX on the firs try 85 questions and the machine shut right off.

I think the class you are referring to is the class of '08...my class started off with 30 people and graduated 18...17 of us passed on the first try and the one who did not passed on the 2nd try after a little review.

Dosage calculations isn't so bad you just have to find a method that works for you and stick with it. Is Dr. F still teaching calculations? If so then she doesn't care how you get your answers just as long a you can show your work so use whatever method works for you.

that's awesome :).

Can any one tell me what is on the entrance exam??

My friend said she was going to schedule her exams there.

So, what was your pre-NLN test score and TEAS score if you don't mind me asking??

my friend actually changed her mind and is taking the exams back in miami..but will transfer her scores.

I took the test in October for entrance in January. On the NLN, I got an overall 118 Composite Score/79%. On the TEAS, score are a little different. I got a 79.4% (Reading 92.5%, Math 75.6%, Science 63.3%, English 81.8%). Hope this helps!
