I was wondering about the good lpn schools in the tampa area. I'm trying to get my RN but the wait is so long so. I decide to get my lpn first and do the bridge program at HCC. I would get in quicker and I could work as an lpn while waiting to start the bridge program. I would appericate anyone help. I applied for Erwin but they have a lottery so its no gurantee that I will get in. I tried brewster as well but my high school transcript didn't get here in time for the deadline. So im running out of options thanks for listening.:o

I'm in Erwin and what they told me is that the lottery is more of a formality if they get a large number of applicants. It hasn't happened as of yet. There was 270 applicants the year I applied and we all got in. Same with this year. The only thing that the lottery does screw up is the pick of the class start time you want. So the longer it takes for your number to come up in the lottery the harder it is to get your first pick but again everyone that I talked to got the class they wanted.

Schools in Tampa. Gulf Coast off of 301 and MLK. Heard mixed reviews about that one. There's another one off of Florida by the Lutz area but I don't know the name.

St. Pete has Galen, Keiser, and PTEC. I've haven't heard anything about the LPN programs but I've heard and seen some mixed reviews about Galen's RN program.

I'm doing the same thing that you're planning for that very reason. Although since I've been at Erwin I've heard some not so hot things about HCC's RN program so I'm applying to SPC because from what I've heard and seen the program there is better.

I went to Erwin.......what an awesome school!!!

I know someone at Galen's program who likes it, for what that's worth. I wasn't aware HCC had a waiting list - my old coworker who is now an HCC RN student got in right after she applied. Maybe she got lucky? I go to USF, and they don't have a wait list either.

They don't have a wait list. It's just that they have around 500 people apply every year for roughly 100 spots for the two campuses. When I was going there I spoke with a couple of people who were denied with a 3.8 on pre reqs because of how many people applied. It's just easier if you have a LPN because the bridge programs are easier to get in because not a lot of people want to go that route.

 I have also thought about going to Erwin. I am at HCC taking pre-regs right now. I hear all of the stories about HCC accepting only so many students per semester. My main problem is I have to do the nursing program in the evenings (only admittance is in the Spring) with the current job I have. For me it's a matter of getting accepted once I am done with pre-regs. I may decide to do the LPN program at Erwin if I am not accepted, at least that way I will have already finished the HCC pre-regs. Reguardless I am staying positive and my mantra is, I will get accepted!

If you can after you finish the pre reqs when you apply pick the Plan City program from what I've heard it's easier to get into that one than the DM campus because no one wants to drive to Plant City for class. If that could be an option for you.

I am 4th quarter at Gulf Coast, will graduate in June. It has been a wild ride, so fasten your seat belt and bring $20,000. Be ready for your instructors to be hired yesterday and confused. Be ready to have your background check lost, your "books" made on a copy machine, and no teacher training whatsoever. welcome aboard.

I am so happy I decided not to go their. I had all the paperwork finished and two days before I was suppose to start they called me up wanting $750 for "start up fees" after I had alreasy filled out my loan papers and had everything broken down price wise.

At least with all the things that have happened their you made it through. Congratulations on being almost done.

HELP!! ..i am moving from Hawaii to Tampa in May and I was curious as to what would be the best pathway/ what schools are the best. I am currently finished all but 3 classes for my prereqs for HCC but I know there is a waiting list. I looked into Concorde for a 6 month Patient Care Tech(PCT)/Avanced CNA course and I figured that would be a good route to take while I am waiting but I really have no idea how everything really works or how I should approach the nursing school thing..Any advice??

DO NOT go to Concorde!!!! You're going to pay well over $10000 for six months of school when you can get into a CNA program that'll run aroun $700 and learn the same things. The only difference is that PCT's learn how to draw blood in class and CNA's learn in the hospitals. Then if you want to work while in nursing school you'll be able to without having extra loans. There credits also don't transfer to anywhere.

Also I would call HCC to see if the classes that you are currently taking towards their pre req's are ones that they will accept if you haven't already.

Good luck.
